I was jonesing for "Stone in Love" last night (somewhere along the line I lost my Escape cassette), so I downloaded what I thought was the studio version of the song from Audiogalaxy. The version turned out to be solo Steve Perry, recorded when he played at some bar gig pretty recently.
Anyway, Steve was croaking--croaking! out the lyrics. I laughed til I cried. I couldn't believe how embarrassingly awful it was. Steve Perry lost his voice. And without that voice, Steve doesn't have a whole hell of a lot going for him.
It's kinda sad...I really dig classic Journey. Songs like "Open Arms" and "Faithfully" are slowdance makeout masterpieces for 80s kids. Oh well.
Anyone else disillusioned by the death of Steve Perry's voice?

I like that song. I haven't heard anything sung by Steve Perry since his last Journey album Trial By Fire.

His replacement in Journey Steve Augeri has a great voice though, he can sing all of the old Journey songs almost exactly like Perry did in the old days. Check out the Journey 2001 DVD.

"Those crazy nights, I do remember...In my youth..."

'Escape' was the BOMB back then...Still a classic rock album, IMHO...

Isn't it a great song? I so want to be the blue jean girl!!! Great melody, so much fun to sing...
Aggravatingly enough, "Stone" isn't on Journey's Greatest Hits record. Have you noticed how greatest hits packages always leave off one song--and it's always one of your faorites???
I STILL don't have the song in my vast library. I miss my Escape cassette, tho--I'd had it for decades and a crackhead stole it.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Betty Boop. I could never figure out why 'Stone In Love' was never on the GH package. Song has a cool guitar riff that still sounds amazing live. I was lucky enough to catch Journey live last year and I was real impressed with them. Musically, they haven't missed a beat and Steve Augeri did a great job with the old tunes. The new ones were good too.

Always dug that song. And yep, BettyBoop, those slow-dance tunes from Escape were makeout masterpeices allright. I remember gripping and groping to "Open Arms" many a time, as well as "Babe" by Styx.

Ah, the 80's.....

Do you know of any mp3 sites that have Stone in Love?? I couldn't find it on Audiogalaxy...

Does anyone know what "Stone in Love" means? Dies Steve mean Stone like Stone-cold, like "bottom line, I am in love."
Or is he singing from the perspective of a pet rock?

Pet rock?? Is that what they call it up there in Long Island these days??

Speaking of - yeah, I remember all the junior high dances, slow dancing to Journey as long as you could so you wouldn't have to get caught walking around with that stiffy.

Escape was a great album - groundbreaking, IMO - first time we heard it we were knocked out. "Still They Ride" was my favorite at the time.

Yep. IF you like Journey you'll like the DVD. Augeri has the classics down as good as Perry ever did.
