Is it fair to compare these two guys and say one is better than the other? I'm not sure. I have always leaned towards Edward being the best I have ever seen, but my brother, who is also a big fan of both, says Stevie was the best, and I am not convinced that he is wrong. What is it that determines how good a guitar player is? I do not play the instrument, so I just have to go by what I see and hear, like most of us. Both of these guys amaze me like no other, but it is how they amaze me which is different. I am amazed by Edward's innovation and sheer talent to play the guitar with Stevie it is his passion for playing the guitar and the fluidity with which he plays. I guess both of these guys, in my book, are/were the best at playing their style of music. Eddie a more classical rock and Stevie a more blues/rock style. I think it's a tie. What do you guys think?

Awwww man. I was hoping this would never come up.

Forget it P-dog. They are EQUALS. They both have about the same amount of spirit and ability to pass it through the medium of guitar equally. They are different, yet equal. The only thing you can poke at is technique, speed etc, but the basic musicianship is just equal. I refuse to hurt myself on it.

There's no comparison to be made...In fact, I have ALWAYS wanted to hear what they thought of one another...They'd have to appreciate each other...

Can you IMAGINE what a SRV/EVH album would have sounded like??!!?? It'll never happen and it's ALREADY my favorite album ever!!

Why, BC? I think they would have stretched each other in great ways...Let Nile Rogers produce it to get that funky pop flavor...yes?

IMO Eddie completely destroys Stevie. I don't like SRV's style or playing half as much as Eddie's.

I'm hoping the laughing message icon above your post means you're just kidding.
To each his own, but NOBODY "completely destroys Stevie." Is EVH better from a technical standpoint? Sure, but SRV ain't no slouch. And I can't think of anyone, EVH included, who plays with more passion and soul than SRV did. Not to say that EVH has no soul - he's probably the best combo of technique and heart. But IMO, it's 1a. EVH, 1b. SRV.

Lighten up Francis! My question had nothing to do with comparing someone who is dead with someone who is still alive. It had to do with comparing two elite guitarists that played different styles and if you don't like questions like these then don't post!

I tried and tried...but I can not choose one over the other. To be honest, when he was alive, I would have rather hung out with Stevie, I liked his attitude better.

TOTALLY agree with you, DG...I'm sure Ed has done wonderful things for people, but I think, given the choice, I'd have to hang with Stevie...He was a great guy by ALL accounts...

Apples and oranges. Two completely different styles of guitar playing.

I prefer to think of the blues jams that Stevie and Jimi are cookin up somewhere right now....
