Duff McKagan Talks About Axl's Current Guns N' Roses Lineup

(3/2/03, 2 p.m. ET) -- Former Guns N' Roses bassist Duff McKagan has rejoined with guitarist Slash, drummer Matt Sorum, and guitarist Izzy Stradlin to form a band that's basically back together except for singer Axl Rose.

The enigmatic frontman continues on with a current Guns N' Roses lineup consisting of guitarist Robin Finck, bassist Tommy Stinson, guitarist Richard Fortus, guitarist Buckethead, and drummer Brian "Brain" Mantia. The only current member that was around playing with the old band is keyboardist Dizzy Reed.

McKagan was asked his thoughts on the current Guns N' Roses--and Sorum added his two cents. "It's not Guns N' Roses, you know? [Axl] should have probably done his own solo record," said McKagan. "In saying that, also, I do wish him the best. We went through a lot together and I still have a lot of love for the guy. It's a shame that there's a...he's doing a lot to...there's a lot of bitterness..."

"Does Paul McCartney go around calling himself 'the Beatles'?" interjected Sorum. When McKagan answered no, Sorum retorted, "There you go."

"But he's doing what he thinks is the right thing," McKagan continued. "You can't fault a guy for that, but it's not Guns N' Roses."

Guns N' Roses are currently completing their forthcoming album, Chinese Democracy, which the band attempted to tour on late last year. Meanwhile, the rest of the former members--whose band name is under wraps--are looking for a singer. The band has more than 50 songs written and is planning to release an album and then tour.

I could have sworn that they had found a lead singer a few months ago. Anyone else remember hearing this?

It would be pretty cool though, I think, for the original lineup to reunite though (short-lived as it may be).

I'm actually pretty pumped to hear what these guys can do without the bitter, kilt-wearing, hopelessly narcissistic poseur that is Asshole Rose.

For some reason, I think a guy like John Corabi might be a good choice.

Too bad Ray Gillen's no longer with us... FUCK that would kick ass!

As far as the singer goes, I hope they get Sebastian Bach, even though he's probably almost as big of an asshole as Axl.

I met Slash, Duff and Matt last year, when I went to see the Dave and Sam show, they are really cool guys, it seemed like they went for lunch after rehersal, I think they could make a great album together.

I met Duff out here last year backstage at the Cox Arena. I asked him about who the new singer was going to be, and he confirmed that the internet rumors were true about them getting the lead singer from Buck Cherry. But, that guy got a better offer (???) and dcided to leave. Duff said there was no animosity between them, and things were looking good, but then that dude split. I asked who was next, and he said "I can't tell you, but we're looking a several high-profile names." A few days later I read an article about Sebastian Bach in the local paper, and they were interviewing him about his role in the play "Jesus Christ Superstar". He did mention in the interview that he had been contacted by Duff, Matt and Izzy about joining up with them and he was considering it.
"Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that."

"This is a lttle prayer dedicated to the separation of church and state. I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen. ."

"I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately."

Axl must have fallen into a well again... I thought Roth was stupid for leaving VH. I thought Ed and Al were stupid for not getting back with Roth or Hagar after the VH3 episode... But shit, Axl takes the cake for stupidity in a band... Although I do have a few of the only concerts for Chinese Democracy on audio

JOSH TODD Bucks GUNS N' ROSES - Mar. 12, 2003

Former BUCKCHERRY frontman Josh Todd recently spoke to Rolling Stone about his failed attempt at becoming the frontman of a new group featuring former GUNS N' ROSES members Slash (guitar), Matt Sorum (drums), and Duff McKagan (bass).

After a much-talked-about live performance last April at the Randy Castillo benefit concert in Hollywood with Slash, McKagan, Sorum, and former BUCKCHERRY guitarist Keith Nelson, Todd teamed with the ad hoc group in a local studio to explore further possibilities. The quintet worked five days a week for a month and came up with ten songs.

"It was amazing, the band was slamming," Todd said. "And then Slash just came in one day and just shitcanned the whole thing. He said, 'I can't do this anymore.' And we were like, 'What?' It was a real drag 'cause the energy in that room was so amazing, and it could have been a really great thing if the egos would have let it [be]. There were just too many chiefs in the tribe."

According to Todd, Slash soon began downplaying the experience. "All of a sudden [Slash] is in the press saying they're auditioning singers now, and they auditioned me. And I'm like, 'What are you talking about, man? You didn't audition me? We did a show together!' It was just so stupid."

"I don't know what his deal is," Todd continues. "I don't know if he was not confident in the lineup . . . I was just so pissed off that I wasted a month of my time."

The singer also slammed Slash and company for taking their vocalist search to VH1, which will allegedly document the band's tryouts for a new television show. "How gay is that?" said Todd. "What the fuck? He's turning to reality TV? It's like 'American Idol' with the GN'R band, you know? I just think that totally takes away from what it could have been, but, whatever."

Todd, who is currently mixing his first solo album, teamed with a group of unknown musicians for the project, which he describes as "new school meets old school," and will now consider whether to shop it to labels or take it to the public through alternate means.
