Okay, how many of you get pissed off, because a lead singer of one of your favorite bands can't sing like they used to? It happens to the best of them. Even Sammy is showing problems with his high range now. Dave's voice was just a mess at the beginning of last tour, because of smoking and singing improperly. How about the singers to Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dokken, Def Leppard, etc...I'm sure there's more. I think these guys should try a little harder to quit. It's so nice to hear an old Dokken album with Don hitting an insanely high note. I miss that. Now, even though the guy sounds great in a lower range, he struggles to sound good when he sings some of Dokken's classics. I think the saddest part was when I saw them on tour over the summer and Don came out smoking a cigarette. Does he think that looks cool? It looks stupid for a guy in his 40s to do that. Those high notes are no more. Most of the songs on their new live CD sound great, but Don has made up new parts for the songs so he can sing lower and have the bassist sing the original notes. It sounds good, but I believe the lead singer should sound like they do on the album. Joe Elliot is another example. Although with loud speakers he sounds great still, on VH1 Storytellers he showed his problems. Everything he sang sounded very strainy. I find it amazing he still has his high range. Other classic rock bands suffer the same problems and I hate to see it happen. Anyone agree?

To start with, everyone should stop smoking.

Talking about Iron Maiden, assuming you're talking about Bruce, I think he's still got the pipes for sure. I haven't heard any recent live stuff, but on Brave New World he's still the "human air raid siren" as far as I can tell.

As for Joe Elliott, he was never a good singer in my opinion. I don't mind the band, but his talent was never in the vocal department.

As for DLR, I totally agree that he'll be much better off if he lays off the smoking too. People who say Dave was never a good singer are wrong, he used to be able to hold a note really well, but from what I've heard from 1999 he's lost some of that ability. Laying off smoking can only help him improve his range and power.

Stopping smoking may also save their life from suddenly ending!!!! Dokken was never a good singer live...but he does have a distinct voice that is very hard rock sounding. I like that the are still around and I love Reb Beach as their guitar player..better than some no-name guy that blows!!!!
I saw Sammy and he still sounds great in my mind!!

Sammy has a good voice yet. Dave's voice sounded awesome when he had the tour going for a while. I actually liked it better. It sounded cooler to me when I heard it.

When you guys refer to DLR quitting smoking are you talking about cigarettes or pot? I have never seen DLR with a cig in his hand. All these years I just assumed he never/doesn't smoke. Are you sure?

Joe - this is an excellent topic and a point that I'm surprised hasn't been brought up much in the past.

Smoking only damages a singer's instrument - and unlike a set of drums or a guitar, this instrument cannot be replaced.

Smoking can definitely cut a singer's career short if they're not careful. Same for anyone else - LONGEVITY is the key, and smoking kills that.

I know for sure now I won't start smoking - I can't hit a high range without cigarettes as it is.

LOL, on a good day I can be a baratone, but most of the time I'm a bass and I hate it. The funny thing is, all the bands I listen to have a vocalist with a high range. With them smoking, however, I find myself being able to sing some of the band's newer songs (Dokken, Def Leppard)...lol. I guess that's the only good thing I can see coming from smoking is that I can sing along to some of their new songs, but the power in each tune is lost with a lower voice. I sure as hell will never smoke, because I don't wanna become Barry White

I could do Barry White if it's first thing in the morning and I've just woken up.

Sometimes when I attempt to sing along to Sammy Hagar, I get comments like "You sound like a dying cow" or things to that drift.

My range must really really suck.

Are you crazy man? Both Bruce Dickinson and Rob Halford sing just as well as they did back in 1982!!! I saw them BOTH live last summer and I can attest you that!!

For the record, Bruce doesn't smoke, but Rob still does! Doesn't seem to affect him that much.

Maybe the reason Rob Halford and Freddie Mercury could hit all the high notes had to do with er uh... certain throat relaxation techniques that they may have also applied elsewhere? (Not that I want to dwell on THAT thought for very long )

Actually, the best case for not smoking.....

From what I've heard, Bruce Dickinson still is the "air raid siren," his voice hasn't suffered much at all over the years.

I think Dave's problems stem more from improper singing techniques and his falsetto screams, than anything else.
