    catman,

How about Montrose & UFO & Blue Oyster Cult & The Outlaws & Skynyrd & Heart & Rush & Robin Trower & The Eagles & ZZ Top & Santana & Cheap Trick & REO Speedwagon & (early) Fleetwood Mac & Rainbow & Black Sabbath & Alice Cooper & Triumph...and on & on & on...

Oh wait. The MTV VMA and all of today's fabulous musical innovators were on last night, so all the dinosaurs above no longer matter, right? All those dinosaurs thrived in the 70s, which are long gone and so must be collectively tossed in the dumper like yesterday's garbage.

Funny how every last f*cking "artist" nominated at the VMA smells worse than the litter critters that my cat leaves in the litter-box.

Thank God this is America, where a guy can still join a band with three other guys and keep the tradition of great 70s rock and roll alive.

They have a little part of the Black Sabbath or Ozzy Behind the Music, where they show how well their first album did. There's a clipping of the British album charts, and I think that Black Sabbath, Judas Priest and Queen were all in the top 5. Now THOSE were the days!
"There's a Japanese term called wabi-sabi, not wasabi, but wabi-sabi. It means an appreciation for the imperfect, the less than precision. The cowboy boots that you never polish because it's bad luck. That is completely wabi-sabi. Van Halen is that." - DLR 2002<br /><br />"Look! I can see their parachutes! They're ok..." - Tenshinhan, DragonBall Z

Yeah, the '70s ruled. As did the early '80s. Sometimes wonder what would've happened if these guys from the '70s had had the chance to make their music with the technology that exists today, what would happen? But maybe it's the fact that they didn't have a lot of technology at their disposal that makes the music special. Take "Bohemian Rhapsody" and how they overdubbed and overdubbed the vocals and how if they did it today they'd probably feed it into a computer or something that would overdub it for them, but would it sound as good? Probably not. Look at ZZ Top - their early albums are awesome and they still sound great live, but their recent albums, while good - I don't know - something's missing.
One thing that really bugs me is that a lot of so-called "Classic Rock" stations, while playing the classics, will rarely play a new song by a classic act, and so I'll hear "I Can't Drive 55" or "Heavy Metal" all day, but I'll never hear something off one of Sammy Hagar's recent albums (for one example). Or the recent ZZ Top albums for another. To me, if an artist qualifies for "Classic Rock", unless their sound has changed drastically, their new stuff should be just as welcome as their old...

    Donor

Rock radio was no different then than it is now. If you listened then to 2 hours of music, you may hear 5 good songs. I ALWAYS had to get out the 8-Xs cause the radio was suckin so bad. I don't remember hearing a lot of Nugent or Sabbath or Alice Cooper on the radio. I DO remember hearing dreck like Journey or REO Speedwagon or Styx.
Another Opinion: I think that video killed the radio star. It is all image now. There are so many bands from the pre-MTV years that would never have made it today simply because they don't have 'great' looks, whatever that is. What bands do you think would not have made it today?
