A lot of musicians make a profound mark with a song that you never want to get out of your head (nor want to), and then *poof*...gone. Maybe that one song was all they could write well. Maybe they were too interested in the integrity of their craft to remain "marketable". Perhaps thay just didn't have the backing they needed to continue, whether it be financial or fan base.

Anyhoo, I find myself thinking "what if" with a lot of them. Tonight I was listening to Marc Cohn singing "Walking In Memphis". Greate piano melody, great lyrics, total fucking VIBE.

I'm thinking Marc juat happened to show up too late in Bruce Hornsby's "piano renaissance".

Who else should have been around for a few more rounds, in your opinion?

Even though they had a bunch of records, I always liked the outfield even thought they pretty much only had one big bang.

Fuel had that pretty good hit, then pretty much zippo. I doubt they will be back. Thats a recent example.

This is a toughy to remember being that most of them were so brief. I'll ponder it for a while.

I dont even remember the one you mentioned.

    The Outfield ROCKED, bro!

"Voices of Babylon" was a pretty good followup to "Play Deep", which had pretty much every freaking song getting radio airplay.

After that, they were pretty much, welll....out to left field.

Don't know Marc Cohn, huh? Well, case in point for the thread.

seen, I listen to the Outfield's greatest all the time...

wolf...GREAT call on Marc Cohn...That first album is awesome, but the rootsy piano player just doesn't stay large...Even Hornsby's audience is small now wvwn though he remains a major talent and songwriter...

I thought Big Head Todd and the Monsters would stick awhile...

Spin Doctors crash back to Earth was deafening, but I always hated them anyhow...

The real one I hoped for more from was Counting Crows...Their follow up album was good, but they just haven't caught the fire they had with the first record...

Yep, Toad the Wet Sprocket was cool, and I couldn't agree more about Counting Crows, Sacto.

BoDeans were/are incredibly talented, but they just seem to disappeat just as fast as they reappear.

I miss Crowded house a lot too. The Finn brothers are incredibly talented.

Blind Melon comes immediately to mind. No Rain got all the attention, and I think it's one of the worst songs on that debut album. My understanding is that when Shannon Hoon died, the album that had just come out, Soup, was doing very poorly. Personally I love that record, it's very tortured and personal. It's one of my first choices when I'm feeling angry and want to feel sorry for myself. Shannon Hoon was in a very dark place, and I think he did a brilliant job of writing lyrics that hit home. Also the band were very solid musically with a great two guitar interplay going on.

Guess they might be considered 'one hit wonders' over that side of the pond but they were a big success and very active in the charts here for 10 years or so. Not really traditional 'one hit wonder' material

I didn't mean to group them with the one-hit wonders like that - just reminiscing about music I missed at that point.

Yeah, I remember the brothers in Split Enz as well.

I like the Spin Doctors. Two Princes is awesome! They weren't a one hit wonder though, but i'm surprised how they get no airplay anymore, they were everywhere around the mid-nineties.

Living Colour's first album Vivid was great, their other albums weren't that good though.

I also think that Walking In Memphis was a great song Wolfman.

I like that song Take On Me by A-Ha, great video on that song, they were a one hit wonder.

I also remember a cool song Breakfast At Tiffany's by a band I can't remember the name of.

Eagle Eye Cherry- Save Tonight is a good song.

How about that song by Chumbawamba I Get Knocked Down But I Get Up Again!

My Sharona by The Knack is a classic one hit wonder.

Faith No More comes to mind. They disappeared after Epic was a hit, even though they released three more albums.

yeah, breakfast at tiffany's! i can't remember that band either.

seen mentioned fuel, which i thought had some good tunes. i really digged that song bad day. then they just stopped playing it.

3 doors down is due for another album, but still nothing. i liked their first one alot.

i think that the knack will probably remain the biggest one hit wonders in history.

that song sex and candy by marcy playground. man, i despised that song with a passion. but they're not around anymore, no complaints here though.
