On October 31st, MCA is releasing Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Anthology: Through The Years, their third compilation since 1993. Here is the tracklist:

Disc 1: "Breakdown," "American Girl," "Hometown Blues," "The Wild One, Forever," "I Need To Know," "Listen To Her Heart," "Too Much Ain't Enough," "Refugee," "Here Comes My Girl," "Don't Do Me Like That," "Even The Losers," "The Waiting," "A Woman In Love," "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around," "You Got Lucky," "Straight Into Darkness," "Change Of Heart."

Disc 2: "Rebels," "Don't Come Around Here No More," "The Best of Everything, "So You Want To Be A Rock'N'Roll Star," "Jammin' Me," "It'll All Work Out," "Love Is A Long Road," "Free Fallin'," "Yer So Bad, "I Won't Back Down," "Runnin' Down A Dream," "Learning To Fly," "Into The Great Wide Open," "Two Gunslingers," "Mary Jane's Last Dance," "Waiting For Tonight," "Surrender."

Now, I like Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - have all their stuff except Echo, but why another compilation - especially one that only offers one new song ("Surrender"). Would've been nice to at least get a couple more unreleased or some of the b-sides that didn't make Playback. I don't really think this is a Petty deal as he is now with - yep, Warner Brothers - I think this is more of a Universal/MCA way to make money off an artist no longer in their "stable", but still, couldn't they have offered us something a little more than what we already probably have?

Tom may owe MCA according to contract.
Remember how Aerosmith had to fulfill their contract obligations before they could release anything with their new label?
Same thing happened with Delbert McClinton (who ended up putting out like 3 compilation discs in a row - case in point).

Just my guess.

Yeah, it can be frustrating when you buy a band's studio albums everytime and then get rewarded by being insulted with compilation albums.

Tom Petty has been with Warner Bros for several years now and has released 3 studio albums for WB. I doubt that he owes MCA any material at this point, they're just being greedy. Tom probably has very little if any involvement in the project. Universal (MCA's parent company) also distributes A&M records and they have released several Police and REM compilations in the last few years, with little involvement from either band. Stick with the Petty and Police boxes. much better value overall

If my memory serves me right I think mca/uni has another tom and the heartbreakers album in the vault.I believe this may have been recorded after into the great wide open. Im not sure on the details on this one. I think i might have read this somewhere when tom petty was promoting wildflowers. I say they should remaster the tom petty and the heartbreakers catalog. Lord knows they could use it. 3

I think Wolfman may be right on this one. record companies can hold artists to a contract that says they have to release more albums before they find a better record company. John Mellencamp has actually provided 2 examples of this.
1) spent a minimal amount of time on the "Dance Naked" album just to get it done. did a half ass job on the thing.
2) released the rough harvest collection of different recordings of previously released material to fill an obligation to get out of a contract with Mercury records and sign with Columbia.
Sad part is, I bought both of 'em anyway.

I just listened to The Extremist CD today and that song is awesome! I love it when the guitar and drums kick in.

I have everything up through She's The One - never got Echo because I haven't been too happy with the way anything has sounded since Into The Great Wide Open. Knowing that, how was (is) Echo?

Maybe Tom will hit the road again this summer. His show last year was fucking incredible.... no album to promote, so they just played whatever they felt like. Old songs. Blues. Stones covers. Country. It was all good. A Most Unholy performance, as would say......

Welcome back, Van HALEN!!!!
