NEWS - INXS Sets Spring U.S. Tour
    03/04/2002

(3/4/02, 3 p.m. ET) -- Nearly five years after the death of frontman Michael Hutchence, Australian rockers INXS are ready to tour the U.S. again. The outing, which kicks off May 30 in Anaheim, California, will be the group's first on these shores with Jon Stevens, the former Noiseworks frontman who's been with INXS since early 2000. The group's Australian performances since Hutchence's death have been fronted by guests such as American singer Terence Trent D'Arby and Aussie rocker Jimmy Barnes.

It's not the first time INXS has planned a U.S. tour since Hutchence's death. The band was supposed to play here last spring and summer on the Great Australian Bite tour alongside Midnight Oil and Men At Work, but that trek was canceled before it ever got off the ground.

Guitarist-keyboardist Andrew Farriss told LAUNCH that he expects things to go a bit easier this time around, as opposed to the band's early days. "There was one gig we did in a place called Blacktown, at, at a notorious gig called the Cohman Cutter, where you'd have, like, crazy drunk people with knives trying to get through into the dressing room if they didn't like you. It was just weird, you know? One of our, our road-crew guys was walking across the car park, and this car comes up and deliberately hits him, you know? So I walked over to the window and I say, 'Hey, listen, that's just terrible,' so they all jump out and start beating the crap out of me, throwing me up against a chain-wire fence, and that was pretty scary because I had three of these big dudes all having a go at me, and I coulda died that night," he recalled. The club's bouncer saw what was happening and pulled Farris to safety.

In a statement, Farriss added, "No one will ever replace Michael as the lead singer of INXS. At the same time, we all still have a passion to perform and to continue what we love. In the past year we've played some shows with Jon, who is a fantastic singer. It has felt very comfortable and sounded pretty damn good, so it seems a natural progression to perform together for this U.S. tour."

There will be no new album to promote, but there is another Greatest Hits package coming in the spring that will feature one previously unreleased song called "Tight."

The INXS itinerary (subject to change):

May 30 - Anaheim, CA - The Grove Of Anaheim

    May 31 - San Diego, CA - Humphrey's

June 1 - Las Vegas, NV - House Of Blues

June 2 - Agoura Hills, CA - Canyon Theatre

June 4 - Los Angeles, CA - El Rey Theatre

June 6 - Reno, NV - Reno Hilton

June 7 - Saratoga, CA - Historic Mountain Winery

June 8 - Kelseyville, CA - Konocti Amphitheatre

June 9 - Jacksonville, OR - Britt Festivals At Britt Pavilion

June 11 - Salt Lake City, UT - Utah State Fairpark

June 13 - Phoenix, AZ - Celebrity Theatre

June 14 - Bernalillo, NM - Santa Ana Star Casino

June 15 - Denver, CO - City Lights Pavilion

June 22 - Robinsonville, MS - Horseshoe Casino

June 23 - Atlanta, GA - Chastain Park Amphitheatre

I really wish they'd change their name. I think these guys made some great music, but without Michael it's not complete. I still don't understand why bands that still like to play together even after the tragic loss of one of their members can't continue to play together under a different name!

I really loved this band and am glad they are still out there. Does anyone know anything about Jon Stevens? Does he have the same style as Hutchence?
I would have like to have seen them with Terence Trent D'Arby. I think he is an excellent vocalist.

what are they supposed to do, quit playing and go work at McDonald's just because Hutchence died? fuck that name change bullshit. Farriss just said "no one will replace Michael," good enough for me. they didn't change the name of the Chicago Bulls when Jordan retired...

I never said I didn't want them to stop playing - just the opposite, I'd like the 5 of them to continue together, just not as INXS.

You can't compare a sports team to a band. A sports team is a corporate franchise and the players mere employees. The word "team" is mere wishful thinking - you hope everyone will work together for the common good, but sometimes they do not (which can happen in a band as well). Did the Bulls change the name when Jordan left? No - did they change it when he joined originally? No again. It's a business, a company, just like that McDonald's down on the corner - employees/players come and go, but it stays the same ol' McDonald's. The only difference is we don't care if Chucky Jordan is still working the deep frier at McDonald's, but a lot of people still wish Michael Jordan was working as a guard (and not security) for the Chicago Bulls.

A band however is formed often by friendship, acquaintance at the least, and then bolstered by outside members brought in to fill needs - hey, we have three guys, but no one plays bass - let's put up an ad. The band then undergoes rigorous trials - playing at local dives and parties, developing a chemistry. And if the chemistry is good and the sound is right, they may go places. Sometimes adjustments are made even after you are signed (Deep Purple) before stardom hits, but if you do hit, once you are around for awhile, you become identified by certain elements. And one of the elements that identified INXS over their 17 or so years was Michael Hutchence words and voice. Can you take the "O" out of H2O and still have water? No! And you cannot take Michael Hutchence out of INXS and still have INXS! There's no shame in changing the name, in recognizing that you are a different band now than you were for 17 years. Just because it's de rigueur these days for a band to soldier on with fill ins at key positions, doesn't mean it's right.

I agree, I never understood why people get so uptight about what a band calls themselves.

uhh, AC/DC anyone? They did the same thing. Brian Johnson is no Bonn Scott but it still worked, oh about 10 million times with Back In Black alone.

Can't say much about AC/DC because when I first heard them from songs from Back In Black, I had no idea that they had ever been any different. So sure, they've been around for 20+ years now with Brian Johnson, so they're pretty much accepted. INXS isn't going to be around for another 20 years, I don't think. I do wonder how people that were AC/DC fans back in '80-'81 felt about things at the time...

I was an ac/dc fan back then, got into them around 1978 or so and BIB was my first ever show. I don't remember me, or any of my friends, or the press even thinking about name changes. Not because anyone thought it was right/wrong to carry on as ac/dc but no one even considered the question that I remember.

OI! I live at Blacktown! LOL!

Stephens is a pretty good singer. If you wanna check his voice out, look round winMX for any songs by 'noiseworks', his old band.

If they can pull it off, more power to them.

A buddy of mine was at a nightclub in Cairnes, Australia around February/March of last year, and INXS was supposed to perform there a few nights after he left. I forgot who he said the new singer was supposed to be.
