In terms of world sales, I believe it's Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album. See Michael Jackson, Sony feud over sales:

Jackson has one of the most lucrative contracts in the music industry. Given the industry's current downturn, it's questionable whether he could get such a deal elsewhere -- even with the best-selling album of all time, "Thriller," and other multi-platinum discs to his credit.

In terms of U.S. sales alone, it's the Eagles Greatest Hits Vol. 1. See: Message From Don Henley Re: Eagles Reunion.

I think it is probably World wide sales as opposed to US sales. I think That is what Sammy Hagar means when he says Van Hagar sold 42 million albums, he means world wide, cause the statistics show they didn't sell near that in IN THE US. But who knows, maybe in Japan and some other countries like Germany they may have picked up another few million. I think GnR's AFD went 10 Platinum in the US. So maybe 20 million worldwide.

I think it is still Thriller...The biggest selling artist overall worldwide is, I believe, Julio Igelsias...

It's "The Eagles Greatest Hits Volume 1"
    recording industry association of america

I'm not sure if this reflects worldwide sales.

the hulkamaniac brother has always heard on sloid gold, vh-1 and other music shows that the king of pop's thriller was the all time best seller although i think the fleetwood mac's rumors and meatloaf's bat out of hell is in the top ten. the best way to confirm this would be to check that book of world records, check the website for the rock and roll hall of fame which is www.rockhall.com or try to go to billboard magazine site and email them the question. i would love to say it was van halen, axl rose, bon jovi, jackyl, cinderella, quiet riot, alice cooper or others but i do not think it is.
