The term hair band is very over-used.
So let's watch our defintion of it, eh. Def Lep, Bon Jovi, Motley Cre are all above being called washed up hair bands. Skid Row, Extreme, Tesla and Mr. Big weren't either, they didn't/don't have the look or the sound of the unquestionable hair bands:
    Poison
    Warrant
    Winger
    Firehouse
    Slaughter
    Cinderella

Along with some other shittier ones that didn't really make it very big:
    Britny Fox
    Danger Danger
    Kix
    Trixer
plus a slew of others that never made it out of the clubs on the Sunset Strip.

Dokken, Ratt and Quiet Riot were kind of before the whole hair band explosion, although it's probably fair to put them in that category.

A more inclusive title would be "popular rock bands in the late 1980's and early 1990's". "Hair band" tends to sound very negative.

    Mario VH:
    Just to complete it...

I know this is not what you mean, but to me, this is the original 80s hair band!
And the good news is: They're back this year!!

This makes me think, what is a hair band? I've always said I didn't like "hair bands." To me, hair bands = Poison, Warrant, Cinderellla, Twisted Sister, Slaughter, etc. But I see bands on here like Def Leppard, Whitesnake, GNR, and the Scorpions. Are they "hair bands"? Is VH a "hair band"?

Here are a few of what I would consider "hair bands," some obviously more gifted musically than others...

    -Warrant
    -Skid Row
    -Poison
    -White Lion
    -Winger
    -Britney Fox
    -Tesla
    -Firehouse
    -Bad English
    -Whitesnake
    -Motley Crue
    -Great White
    -Cinderella
    -Faster Pussycat
    -Mr. Big
