PAUL STANLEY: "KISS Fans Are Free To Come And Go As They Please" - July 3, 2002

KISS frontman Paul Stanley has all but admitted that various members of the group were credited for performing on many of the band's albums even when session musicians were used to complete the projects instead.

When asked for the reason guest musicians were never credited for their performances on the group's albums, Stanley replied that "although someone might say otherwise, in fact everyone wants fantasy over reality. Whether it applies to people wanting to believe Gene [Simmons] and I co-wrote all the songs our names appear on (we didn't, we often did little more then help each other finish them) or believed everyone put in the same amount of time and effort (that too is ridiculous), the effort was always made to let people see KISS in a way that would be most appealing. Nothing was ever done, then or now, out of fear of the fans' reaction. Fans are always free to come and go as they please. It is my job to be true to myself at all costs. What I believe everyone has always loved about KISS is that we did things our way regardless of opposition or falling out of favor. My job has always been to make the best albums possible, do the best shows possible and be the best KISS possible. At times I've heard misguided comments such as 'Why didn't Ace [Frehley] and Peter [Criss] have equal songs on the albums?' The answer is because those songs weren't good enough! Would you rather have had some material that more than likely wouldn't have stacked up, at the expense of losing songs you have come to know and love? You can look at the albums and figure it out for yourself."

In response to a fan's assertion that no other musicians (i.e. Eric Singer, Tommy Thayer) should ever perform with the group while wearing Ace and Peter's makeup, Stanley was equally defiant: "The individual makeup and outfits in KISS are viewed by most as a collective uniform of the team. That is why, when circumstances make an alternative impossible, even if it's not what you like, the world as a whole views the four characters as KISS. I'm not talking about who's under the makeup or in the costume, I'm talking about the collective image. I understand your point of view. I don't share it. I have never and will never let anyone decide when I should stop doing what I want. It all ultimately comes down to, we don't end the ballgame because someone doesn't want to play anymore. The uniform doesn't have to change, but if necessary the name of who wears it will. Please realize that this is coming from someone who from day one has always hoped and believed that the original members would see this through to the very end. I'm still here."

Stanley also reiterated his previous comment that he would love to see KISS continue without ANY of the original members. Said Paul: "I would still like to believe that at some point with the right members and a firm understanding of the band, that it would be possible to continue without any original members. I don't think that's something I see happening tomorrow, but at some point there is a reality that everyone must face. Including me."
".....and Harry Potter and all of his wizard-friends went to Hell for practicing Witchcraft. The End." -Ned Flander's version of reading "Harry Potter" to Rod and Todd.

I don't even know where to begin on this bullshit rant of Stanley's. So I'll just address the biggest load of bull - the notion that the songs Gene and Paul put on Kiss albums are just so much better than any material Ace or Peter have to offer...

While that may have been partially true in the beginning, it's a total lie now. I'm not holding Ace & Peter as McCartney/Lennon, but they have some skills (well, Ace anyway).

Ace's first and third solo studio albums are far superior to a good deal of Kiss' 1980s output after Lick It Up. I'll take Trouble Walkin' (the album) over Hot in the Shade any day of the week! Lest we forget the Kiss Klassics, "Cadillac Dreams" or "Little Caesar."

And don't even get me started on that piece of shit Crazy Nights. Or those two shit songs from Smashes Thrashes & Hits.

Sorry Paul, this Kiss fan ain't buying it. Ace & Peter may not be capable of Shock Me, Parasite or Baby Driver anymore - but they certainly can't have done worse than "Raise Your Glass," "I Finally Found My Way" or "We Are One."

    Gimme a fuckin' break Paul!
"There's a Japanese term called wabi-sabi, not wasabi, but wabi-sabi. It means an appreciation for the imperfect, the less than precision. The cowboy boots that you never polish because it's bad luck. That is completely wabi-sabi. Van Halen is that." - DLR 2002<br /><br />"Look! I can see their parachutes! This article just reaffirms my belief that KISS are an embarrassing lipstick smudge on the landscape of rock.

    Fuck Paul Stanley.

He seems to forget the best solo album from the four and the one that sold the most back in '78 was ACE'S!!

I also agree that Ace's solo stuff from the 80s kicks the crap that Paul and Co. put out.

I would admit that Ace may be lazy at times but when he was on, HE WAS ON!

Gee, why is it that the one of the only few songs on Psycho Circus that is actually good is Ace's ("Into the Void")? Don't believe that lie about Gene and Paul writing most of that song. BULLSHIT!
Ace confirmed this in an interview a few months ago with Eddie Trunk.

Paul always hated the fact that he could never be a great lead player as Ace.

I USED TO love KISS. But what they are doing now is stupid.

What about the whole makeup persona thing?? Someone ask Paul this:

Wasn't the makeup something that came from INSIDE each original member?? Wasn't it the RESULT of what beast each member could leash from within??

YES IT WAS. Paul and Gene have BOTH said it was like this for years and now it doesn't matter??

    Fuck 'em.

we have that already, Paul. they're called tribute bands. and they would work a hell of a lot cheaper than anything you'd put together, while, most likely, they give us a better show.

As a die-hard Kiss fan since the 1970's I have to weigh in on this.

KISS (Gene/Paul) used to respon when asked about studio guys coming in to play parts and not getting credit this way : "Hey, the 'Stone do it all the time" (which they do). Was I bummed out when I found out that the fourth side of KISS Alive II was recorded with the whole band at one time and mostly with studio guys - You Bet! The songs, with the ACE FREHLEY

The songs, with the exeption of the ACE FREHLEY song "Rocket Ride", sucked. I felt that they could have tacked on a few more live tracks instead.
Which solo album sold the most? Ace Frehley! Why? Because it rocked! The worst selling one though was Peter's. So I can see half of Paul's point on the song writing talent.

It pisses me off that KISS (Stanley/Simmons) never understood their own place in rock history because if they had the band could have really been great. They had their own thing going and by 1977 they were the best selling hard rock act in the world. But instead they got high on themselves, all of them too, Ace,Peter, Gene and Paul. So what did we get? A stupid TV movie, four solo albums which had enough music to make one good KISS album and then we got a DISCO album! WTF? Just because the Village People are on the same lable doesn't mean you jump on that band wagon.
They spent the 80's chasing every hard rock trend and frankly, sounding like everyone else. Now to be honest, I have all the albums except the box set. I'm somewhat loyal to the band, such as it is and I soldier on in the KISS Army even though it feels sometimes like being in the regular Army under Bill Clinton. I saw Ace when he'd play in Berkley and I saw KISS on three different tours in the mid-eighties and I had a blast at each show because they still delivered where it counted: on stage. But even after the reunion I still don't feel that KISS understands who they are and what they meant to us loyal fans.
Tribute bands are fun and I might even get into a KISS-.05, but not if some other guy is up there with Gene's face on. No way! Fuckin' spend the money and create a new charictor! Jeez...

Now if I were KISS, I'd franchise out those tribute bands. That would be an interesting first. Have them sign on to a set of performance standards and let them us the KISS logo (for a fee) and you could have a KISS band in every major city in the US. That would be a trip.

Besides, if you are going to see the WHO this summer you are seeing a 50% tribute band.

Fanhalen, I cruise the board regularly. I mostly post down in the guitar board.

    bob'e'chops,

I have bad news for you. Music has ALWAYS been a business. From day one you made music to eat, made music for the church or you made music for the King. You got paid in advance or you went elsewhere. Somewhere in the early 1960's some Ivy Leauge folk music fans decided that to make money from music was evil. While you did get Bob Dylan popping into the local cafe and playing a set once in a while the fact is all those guys still got paid. Catch the documentry "Isle Of White" sometime, yeah you get to see Hendrix's last big public performance but you get to see some very revealing stuff. You get to see the promoters sweating because a number of the folk acts - Joan Biez chief amongst them- refusing to take the stage until they've been paid cash in advance.

KISS has always been upfront with their motives with their fans and as Paul says, we can take it or leave it. We took it. Other "more prestigeious" bands who turned up their noses at the blatant commercialism are today out hoaring themselve to exclusive corperate gigs. Or are just flat broke. the fact is that you make more money off t-shirts and belt buckles and posters than you ever will off a single record under the standard record industry cornhole contract. That KISS is musing over the idea of a KISS without any origonal members offends you makes sense. Most people who don't understand the industry would be. However, with all of the tribute bands running around pretending to be the Beatles, Van Halen, KISS, Skynard, the WHO and other the fact is that someday these band will have to recieve official sanction from the origonal band. KISS is just ahead of the industry, once again.

I'm actually suprised the Beatles didn't think of this back in 1970.

I dont know a lot about the Kiss situation. However the Stones list session players. Most Stones albums come with a detailed list with who played what on each song.

ACE FREHLEY: PAUL And GENE Are Begging Me To Come Back To KISS - July 10, 2002

KISS guitarist Ace Frehley called into WNEW's Saturday Night Rocks this past weekend and revealed several interesting items to host Eddie Trunk about his current status within the group and his future plans as a solo artist. Among the revelations were the following:

    - His multimedia studio is 3/4 done.
    - His record will be out in the fall. If it doesn't get picked up by a label, he'll put it out on his own through his web site.
    - He now owns the domain name AceFrehley.com (currently shown as owned by Michael McConnell), which he acquired after a legal battle.
    - Is he doing anything with KISS? "If the price is right… [Gene and Paul] are on their knees begging"...
    - "I don't think [KISS] would get away performing without me in makeup"
    - "KISS right now is planning a tour for 2003".
    - He might be producing an album from an undisclosed English singer.
    - He would like to do a DVD of his performance at New York Steel last November, of which he has a copy in a three-camera mix, and split the profits with charity.
    - Ace's solo on drummer Anton Fig's album was pieced together by Anton from five takes Ace did through a zoom amp.
".....and Harry Potter and all of his wizard-friends went to Hell for practicing Witchcraft. The End." -Ned Flander's version of reading "Harry Potter" to Rod and Todd.
