Let's face it, most groups that the media labled as "hair bands" were utter crap and were, for the most part, resposible for the downfall of rock n roll and made legitimate, talented 80's metal bands look bad. For example:

Bad Hair Bands:

Cinderella
Poison
Warrant
Firehouse
Britney Fox
Faster Pussycat
Europe
Many, many more.......

However, there were a handful of bands which were filed under the "hair band" label I feel were talented, solid songwriters. Granted, these bands definately put out their share of crap, but they produced enough quality, hard rock/metal songs to command some sort of respect. A few of my choices:

Ratt
Skid Row
Dokken
Badlands

I can't think of any more at the moment. Anyone else?

I make no apologies for this but I actually like Warrant. Most people associate the band with Cherry Pie and Heaven but they have a much better assortment of material. Check out the albums Dog Eat Dog, Ultraphobic and Belly to Belly. Tons of good stuff on those albums.

This is just my opinion bro, but I can't imagine a universe where Winger is cool and Dio isn't.

I can handle Dio with Sabbath and Rainbow, but I just don't like his solo material.

Out of some of the bands I see being listed as good or bad:

Accept: would not classify as a hair band. Talented, leather wearing twin guitar attack ala Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Scorpions.

Cinderella: If this band (as well as others) came out in t-shirt and levis(Tesla) verus the "hair" look they may have been viewed as a talented metal/hard rock band. At least for the first album.

Faster Pussycat: OK,OK I liked their second album. Thick guitars, kinda Guns N roses sound.

VH is really the only "80's" band I listen to consistently now (but they're still by far my fave of all time)--I'm more of a Rage/Korn/Tool/Slipknot kind of guy . . . but here's the stuff I will actually listen to if it's played on the radio:

White Lion: I'm sorry but Big Game was an awesome album

Warrant: I still love them, but not nearly as much as I did in Jr High

Tesla: rockin!

Extreme: all albums actually find their way into my CD player on occassion--I've loved them since being introcuced by Bill S. Preston Esquire and Ted Theodore Logan

Saigon Kick: 'tis a shame they were lumped into the "hair band" category--awesome band--One Step Closer was really my "gateway drug" into heavier music

Skid Row: they opened for Bon Jovi at the first concert I ever went to

honorable mention: Damn Yankees, Slaughter, Ratt

Bands that I want to kill due to Vh1-Behind the Music overexposure: Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison (although I can tolerate the non-CC album)

Hair bands that on more than one occasion cracked me up then and on occasion crack me up now...

*Iron Maiden ("7 deadly sins...7 ways to win...7 lonely paths to HELLLLLLLLL..."; even "Run To The Hills" cracks me up)

*Winger (the choreography in the videos and the never-ending panty-wetting shots of Kip)

*Megadeth ("...you try to take his BA-ALLLSSS..."; ..."What do you mean I can't pay my BILLLLLLS?"; why do so many of Dave's vocals sound like they were recorded while he was taking a sh*t? )

*Accept (the infamous Heidi intro ...f*cking classic)

*Green Jello ("Little pig, little pig, let me in")

*Helloween (The name alone makes you bust out laughing)

*Cannibal Corpse (The following tune titles are Comedy Hall-Of-Fame caliber: "Devoured By Vermin", "Eaten From Inside", Mummified In Barbed Wire", "Perverse Suffering", "Relentless Beating", "Disfigured", "Orgasm Through Torture" and my personal fave "Puncture Wound Massacre". Kinda makes you wanna ask 'em: "But what's the band REALLY about?" Oh, all those tunes are off the album 'Vile' )

*Judas Priest ("THIS...IS...THE-PAIN-KILLER...MWAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!" . Maybe the funniest metal vocal of all time!)

...I'll probably think of more later...

The Real Deal
The Real Deal does old VH better than any other band in the SF Bay Area. Hearing is believing...

I might get flamed for this, but Winger was actually a great hair band. You oughta listen to their last basically unheard record,PULL, to know what I'm talking about. They really redeemed themselves with that record, but it was too late since Nirvana "slayed" the hair bands.
Others I like:
Skid Row
Def Leppard
Scorpions
Saigon Kick
Tesla
Cinderella
Queensryche

Groups like Warrant, Poison, and a slew of others ruined it for everyone, IMO.

I liked some of the bad ones, such as Britny Fox, just because they'd have some hot chicks in their videos. (Man, I like that one "rebel" Catholic school-girl in Britny Fox's "Girl's School" video! It also brings back memories of that 90's group (forgot the name) that did the "Van Halen" song. They had a hit with "Popular" and had an equally hot school-girl cheerleader in their video!)

A few favorites would include:

Tesla (underrated band that got lumped in with the rest of the "Hair Metal)

Def Leppard (PRE Adrenalize)

Warrant (Dog Eat Dog album actually kicks ASS!)

I don't consider Iron Maiden a "Hair Band" but whatever~
