DREAM THEATER Perform Tribute To IRON MAIDEN At London Gig - Oct. 22, 2002

DREAM THEATER performed the entire "The Number Of The Beast" album by IRON MAIDEN during the second of a two-night stint at the London Astoria last night (Oct. 21).

The legendary progressive rock heavyweights played the material exactly as per the original album, with the exception of "Gangland", which was done in a jazz style. DT, who feature a sole guitarist in the shape of the very-capable John Petrucci, reproduced the second-guitar parts by having keyboardist Jordan Rudess perform them on the keyboard, including the solos.

Following an intermission in the regular set, DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy came on stage wearing a MAIDEN shirt, after which the classic "The Number Of The Beast" spoken intro kicked in. "The Number of The Beast" album cover was projected behind the group, but with DREAM THEATER in the style of the IRON MAIDEN logo.

Back in February, DREAM THEATER performed the entire METALLICA "Master Of Puppets" CD at a show in Barcelona, Spain while donning METALLICA T-shirts and sporting an improvised DREAM THEATER-logo'd "Master of Puppets" backdrop. Billed on DREAM THEATER's official web site as a "VERY SPECIAL SHOW", the gig featured no opening act and was the second of DREAM THEATER's two-night stint at the venue.

Dream Theater's music is so advanced that it sometimes defies description. DT is my favorite band, and John Petrucci is one incredibly talented guitarist.
I would love to see him gig with EVH for kicks, as he did last year with the G3 tour with Satch and Vai.
Do you know a lot of bands that will learn and rehearse another band's entire album and play it at one of their own concerts?
    How's that for a tribute?
Harris, Dickinson and the Maiden boys must be proud!

If you haven't heard of Dtream Theater yet, get ready for incredibly powerfull, heavy, and moving music...

I've never heard Dream Theatre but that's a really cool tribute to Iron Maiden... Maybe I should get a Dream Theatre CD, which one should I get?

“And what we have at our fingertips is arguably one of the greatest high tenor voices ever – that was in Michael Anthony. In our tiny little corner of the universe, that voice is as identifiable as the high voice in Earth, Wind & Fire, as identifiable as the high voice in the Beach Boys. Van Halen is an indelicate house blend of both – that’s intentionally. So I would always look forward to that reunion.” - David Lee Roth

Yes, start with Images and Words.
My other suggestion would be to get A Change of Seasons.
It will give your musical ear a real workout. If the music doesn't catch you right away, be fair and give it some time until you are fully able to process it.
I know this sounds a bit esoteric, but trust me, Dream Theater is not your FM radio kind of band. They could do radio-friendly stuff if they wanted to; instead they create truly brilliant compositions for musically-minded people.

    Give it a try.
