Maybe this is in the wrong forum, but what do you guys think of Ace Frehley as a guitar player? Also, did Eddie write a solo or two for him back in the day? Personally I don't think Ace is that good. What do you guys think?

I started playing because of Ace Frehley, and I'll admit it, it was because I thought he looked cool, I really didn't even pay attention to his
playing, so I got bored and quit then heard Ed and that tweeked my interest and havn't stopped since.

oh I think Ace is your avg player *at best*
remember also a lot of the stuff you hear on the
the Kiss records was not him but studio musicians
he sounded like crap live. imo

Rols, I agree with you 100%, I never thought Ace sounded any good live either. I never knew that Ace wasn't the one playing on the records though.

Could you imagine KISS if Eddie had joined though?

I have high respect for Ace and I worshipped Kiss in the 70`s and stared playing guitar because of the Kiss influence . I think Aces playing was great in Kiss from `73 up to `80 but on the 2000 farwell tour his playing was awful . They did a poll on the Kissonline forum Ace vs. EVH and alot of people thought Ace was a better player than Ed

Of course they are going to say that in their realm. It's the most biased thing I have heard in a long time but the site is obviously frequented with KISS fans.

Even though Ace isn't very technical, he did come up with some pretty cool riffs and he was the original player. I think it's sad they Gene and Paul are assholes who could give a fuck that they are putting posers in their spot to sell out. Pretty fucking sad.

I like Ace Frehley but have to admit that his personal demons were his undoing. And yes, I agree with you man...it pissed me off to no end to see Gene and Paul have other people don Peter and Ace's makeup for shows recently (though Peter has finally come back into the fold). Say what you will about Ace or Peter's abilities, but if I see KISS live I don't wanna see someone simply pretending to be them on stage.

Ace was cool. He embodies the 70's guitar player: a few blues licks and some flash and a whole lot of attitude.

Technically he's an average player. I think he deserved better than KISS though, and I say this as a huge KISS fan. Another band could have gotten more out of him.

Ed did work with Genes Simmons on a couple of demos for the Love Gun album. Ace copied the one Ed did for Christine Sixteen.

Yea I was shocked when I found that out, From Destroyer on it was a studio musician for more than half the records, those bonus songs on Alive II the only one that was him was his song so now I wasn't there, but this is what I read somwhere a few years back I think it was a book or something by Gene.

Check out Ace's solo record from the early KISS days. It's a long ways from the standard KISS stuff. There's some really great guitar work on there, alot heavier than KISS' records.
Yeah,Ace's KISS solo '78 album rocks!

He's not a bad guitarist but certainly far from the best.

I'd take Mark St. John or Vinnie Vincent over Ace Frehley any day. I'm in the minority here - I like KISS better after Frehley was gone for some reason. 70's KISS just sounds boring to me.
