NEWS - Heart Announces Summer Tour
    03/29/2002

(3/29/02, 7 a.m. ET) -- Heart returns to the stage this summer. The band has announced a 26-date U.S. tour that kicks off June 21 at the Red River Valley Fair in West Fargo, North Dakota, and ends August 8 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, Washington, the hometown of Ann and Nancy Wilson.

Besides Ann on vocals, guitar, and flute, and Nancy on guitar and vocals, the latest incarnation of Heart includes guitarist Scott Olson (who played on the 1985 Heart album and who has engineered albums for hard rockers Buckcherry, the Deftones, and Limp Bizkit), former Ozzy Osbourne and Alice In Chains bassist Mike Inez, keyboardist Tom Kellock (who's played with jazz acts including Richard Elliot, Al Jarreau, and Manhattan Transfer, among others), and drummer Ben Smith. It's the same lineup that debuted at Groundworks 2001, the multiday festival held in Seattle last October to help combat world hunger.

About the only constant in Heart's history has been the band's ability to change, whether musically, or personnel- or appearance-wise. LAUNCH asked Nancy Wilson about altering the group, and she said, "They tell you not to reinvent yourself, because your fans have an identity that they know, that is familiar to them, that they don't want to change. But in our case, we've been able to change a lot, but we've had to fight to be able to change a lot."

NEWS - Nickelback, Default, Kick Off College Tour
    04/04/2002

(4/4/02, 12 p.m. ET) -- Nickelback kicks off its latest round of headlining dates in support of its second album, Silver Side Up, tonight (April 4) on the campus of Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. The band is the marquee act on the MTV Campus Invasion, which, as the name suggests, reaches out to 20 college campuses through May 1. Fellow Canadian rockers and friends Default, as well as Injected and Starsailor, are also on the trek.

Nickelback bassist Ryan Peake tells LAUNCH that even though there's plenty of challenges that go into being a successful rock group, he's not complaining, especially compared to the group's early days. "As many sh-tty things that come with the business, that you see after a while, you know, you look back and you're like, 'We were in a van four years ago, driving through the snow, six of us jammed in there, no sleep.' This is OK. This is all right," he says.

Nickelback, Default, Injected, Starsailor tour dates (subject to change):

April 4 - Russellville, AR - Arkansas Tech

April 5 - Ruston, LA - Louisiana Tech

April 6 - Starksville, MS - Mississippi State

    April 8 - College Station, TX - Texas A&M

April 9 - Norman, OK - Univ. Of Oklahoma

April 11 - Columbus, OH - Ohio State Univ.

April 12 - Cleveland, OH - John Carroll Univ.

April 16 - East Lansing, MI - Michigan State Univ.

April 17 - Lexington, KY - Univ. of Kentucky

April 18 - Murray, KY - Murray State

April 19 - Carbondale, IL - Southern Illinois Univ.

April 20 - Champaign, IL - Univ. of Illinois

April 25 - Newark, DE - Univ. of Delaware

April 26 - Amherst, MA - Univ. of Massachusetts

April 27 - Binghamton, NY - SUNY Binghamton

April 29 - Danbury, CT - Western Connecticut

With a sound that blends '90s grunge with polished pop, it's probably safe to assume that Nickelback spent their high school years listening to Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. So, aside from the fact that they're now labelmates, it's easy to understand why Nickelback asked Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell to open a bunch of dates for them this summer.

The tour will kick off May 13 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the jaunt will pass through many major West Coast, Midwest and Southern cities. During the tour, Nickelback and Cantrell will perform at Country Jam USA on July 21 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The following week Nickelback will be one of eight acts to play the Rolling Rock Town Fair July 27 in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The last scheduled Nickelback date with Cantrell is September 20 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Nickelback are currently on the road with the MTV Campus Invasion tour, which also features Default and Injected (see "Nickelback, Default, Injected Invading A College Near You"). Since the tour's launch, three dates have been added: April 29 at Western Connecticut University in Danbury, Connecticut; April 30 at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, Rhode Island; and May 1 at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Cantrell will be touring behind his second solo album, Degradation Trip, which will be released June 25 (see "Jerry Cantrell Conjures Ghost Of Alice In Chains On New LP"). His last disc was 1998's Boggy Depot. Nickelback continue to tour for their second album, Silver Side Up, which has sold more than 3.6 million copies, according to SoundScan.

Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger recently asked Cantrell to contribute to the supergroup track "Hero" for the upcoming "Spider-Man" soundtrack, but the guitarist was unable to make the recording session. So Kroeger, Saliva vocalist Josey Scott and Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron used Tyler Connolly from Theory of a Dead Man — whose debut album is being produced by Kroeger — instead.

Nickelback and Jerry Cantrell tour dates, according to Roadrunner Records:
5/13 - Albuquerque, NM @ Albuquerque Convention Center
    5/14 - Denver, CO @ Fillmore Auditorium
5/16 - Nampa, ID @ Idaho Center Amphitheatre
5/17 - Seattle, WA @ Key Arena at Seattle Center
5/18 - Salem, OR @ Salem Armory Auditorium
5/28 - San Francisco, CA @ The Warfield
    5/29 - Hollywood, CA @ Hollywood Palladium
    5/30 - Mesa, AZ @ Mesa Amphitheatre
6/1 - Dallas, TX @ Smirnoff Music Centre (without Cantrell)
6/2 - The Woodlands, TX @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion (without Cantrell)
    6/3 - Austin, TX @ The Backyard

Lenny Kravitz must be a firm believer in the theory that says a simple, direct approach is most effective. Why else would he call a tour to support his latest album, the rather uncomplicatedly titled Lenny, anything other than the decidedly descriptive Lenny Live?

For his first full-scale North American road trip in almost three years, Kravitz, following a European tour and fueled by his current single, "Stillness of Heart," is set to visit 33 cities beginning July 12 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, according to his publicist. The nearly two-month jaunt winds down September 2 in Phoenix. The last time Kravitz hit the road was in 1999 to support his fifth album, titled — naturally — 5 (see "Lenny Kravitz Sets Dates For Tour With Smash Mouth, Buckcherry").

Party girl Pink — promoting her second album, Missundaztood — will precede the retro rocker's set with one of her own. She'll latch on to the Kravitz caravan just days after completing her maiden headlining tour, scheduled to end June 28 (see "Pink To Embark On Her First Headlining Tour Of North America").

Abandoned Pools, the lone-wolf project of onetime Eels bassist Tommy Walter, has been also been tapped to open the shows. His synth-laden debut, Humanistic, was released in September.

Lenny Live tour dates, according to Kravitz's publicist:

7/12 - Virginia Beach, VA @ Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
7/13 - Atlantic City, NJ @ Etess Arena @ Trump Taj Mahal
    7/16 - Bristow, VA @ Nissan Pavilion
7/17 - Holmdel, NJ @ PNC Bank Arts Center
7/19 - Wantagh, NY @ Jones Beach Amphitheatre

(4/11/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- It appears that the Eagles are planning a multi-date summer tour of the U.S. this year. The band, which played Europe last year but hasn't mounted a proper North American outing in a couple of years, is putting together about 30 dates, and it should all kick off May 31 in Reno, Nevada, according to Billboard.

The report adds that it will be a tour of secondary markets, with stops expected in Little Rock, Arkansas; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; St. Paul, Minnesota; Grand Rapids, Michigan; Omaha, Nebraska; Portland, Oregon; Louisville, Kentucky; Birmingham, Alabama; Knoxville, Tennessee; the annual Summerfest in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and both Tupelo and Biloxi, Mississippi.

Another rumored show will be at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the Joint's seventh anniversary. The Eagles were the first band to play the venue when it opened in 1995.

The official tour announcement is expected next week.

This is great news IMO. I love watching Joe Walsh play!

ZZ Top Gambles On Casino Tour

ZZ Top will hit the road next month for a mini-tour of U.S. casinos. The trek will be the band's first since canceling the final leg of its XXX World Tour last May when bassist Dusty Hill was diagnosed with Hepatitis C.

Sunday (April 21) will see the premiere of the "CMT Crossroads" episode featuring ZZ Top and country duo Brooks & Dunn. The latter act is among those who covered ZZ Top songs for "Sharp Dressed Men," the forthcoming 15-track homage to the Texas rock trio. Willie Nelson, Alan Jackson, Dwight Yoakam, and Hank Williams Jr. are among the other country acts contributing tracks to the set, due April 30 via RCA.

Here are ZZ Top's upcoming tour dates:

May 4: Atlantic City, N.J. (Trump Taj Mahal)
May 7: Uncasville, Conn. (Mohegan Sun Casino)
May 9: Albuquerque, N.M. (Sandia Casino)

NEWS - Rush Announces Tour, Peart Shapes Up
    04/15/2002

(4/15/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- Rush has announced summer tour dates in support of its forthcoming album, Vapor Trails. The road stint starts June 28 at the Meadows Music Center in Hartford, Connecticut, and runs through August 21 at the Journal Pavilion in Albuquerque, New Mexico. More tour dates will be announced at a later time.

Vapor Trails, due out May 14, features the return of the band and drummer Neil Peart. Peart's wife and daughter died in the late '90s, leading the group to take a four-year hiatus. When Peart was ready to return to Rush, he had to reacquaint himself with his drum kit after the long break.

Given Peart's circumstances, bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson led the charge on Vapor Trails. Lifeson told LAUNCH about how Peart worked to get back up to speed. "For Neil, he hadn't played much in the four years, and he was a guy who practiced every single day for at least an hour. So, for him, it was a little bit of a job to get back into shape, but he worked very hard at it, and I think it was something that he really relished. It felt good to get really physical with his kit, and as he was getting material from Geddy and me he became very excited about his arrangements--drum arrangements--and within a few months we were in very good shape."

Although Peart was inactive during the band's hiatus, Lee and Lifeson kept busy. "Well, Geddy had just come off doing his solo record, so he was in top form, actually both vocally and playing-wise on the bass guitar," said Lifeson. "I have a studio at home. I play all the time, so I was feeling pretty good. I was working on a production project with a band, so I was playing and in pretty good shape."

Vapor Trails is Rush's 17th studio album. All of the Canadian band's 22 albums have reached at least gold status, a certification signifying sales of 500,000 copies from the Recording Industry Association Of America.
