After eight years of sitting in a vault and after one of the most talked-about lawsuits in rock history, Nirvana's final studio track, "You Know You're Right," will be officially released on October 29th.
The song will be the first track on a greatest-hits album, simply titled Nirvana. "The Nirvana 'feud' is over," Courtney Love posted on her Web site in late September, "and you get your recordings." The feud -- which culminated with two years of court wrangling between Love and the remaining members of Nirvana, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl -- came to an end when the parties agreed to release a greatest-hits collection this fall; a video will follow early in 2003 and a box set in 2004.

Though the court papers in the suit describe "hundreds" of unreleased Cobain demos that remain in the vaults, "You Know You're Right" is one of a handful of finished Nirvana tracks. "It's one of their best songs," says Adam Kasper, who produced the last session, "probably in the Top Ten."

"You Know You're Right" was recorded on January 30th, 1994, two days before the band left Seattle for a scheduled three-month European tour and just two months before Cobain's death. Nirvana had booked the studio for three days, but due to Cobain's drug problems, he did not make it the first two days. Grohl and Novoselic spent that time working on Grohl's songs, several of which were recut for the first Foo Fighters album. On January 30th, Cobain showed up, in a surprisingly good mood. Nirvana worked through a few of Grohl's tunes and jammed on some Novoselic riffs. "I think they were trying to open it up to more band writing," Kasper recalls.

At a dinner break at a local pizza parlor, Cobain told road stories, including how one night a drunk Eddie Van Halen had ventured backstage at a Nirvana show and begged to jam. The tale brought on a laughing fit from Cobain. "It was funnier than hell," says studio owner Robert Lang.

The band members then returned to Lang's studio for what would be their final session as Nirvana. Cobain suggested a song they had done only once before live. "He was fixing some of the lyrics at the last minute, and he still didn't have a title," remembers Lang. After just two run-throughs, the group cut what would be the master take of "You Know You're Right." "Kurt had the riff, and he brought it in and we put it down," says Novoselic. "We Nirvana-ized it."

In the control room, Kasper and Lang were stunned. "When they started playing it, I was almost speechless," says Lang.

Cobain did four more vocal takes, and Kasper double-tracked the vocal, while Cobain lay on the marble floor of the studio. Cobain's only complaint that day seemed to be his chronic back pain: He said the hard floor made it feel better. Perhaps his physical condition contributed to the evocative lyrics: The verse of "Things have never been so swell" is paired with a chorus of "Pain!" wailed in Cobain's most primal voice. "It was so telling and so typical of Kurt," Kasper recalls. "It's like a message."

Cobain never explained the song and no one in the room dared ask what it was about. The band made plans with Lang to return after its European tour and finish tracks for what would have been its fourth album. As the night grew late, Cobain put down one final guitar overdub, and "You Know You're Right" was complete. The session was over and with that, Kurt Cobain walked out the door.

any ideas on the exact release date for the greatist hits album?
Gozer the Traveller will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldronaii the Traveller came as a very large and moving Torb. Then of course in the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants they chose a new form for him, that of a Sloar. Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you.

I just read where Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl are putting together a video for "You know your Right". I know Nirvana recorded that song the day before they went on a European tour. I'm hoping that someone was able to roll a camera during the takes for this song...and it will be included in the video. I'm not sure if they ever played it live...

Sorry for all the posting....I'm hyped.

NEVER-ENDING NIRVANA

DAVE GROHL has told NME.COM about his shock at hearing the new NIRVANAsong played on the radio – and he revealed that as well as a greatest hits release, there will be an album featuring material that "no one’s ever heard".
The surviving members of Nirvana and Cobain's widow Courtney Love have been at the centre of a legal battle for control of the band's future releases. These issues have now been solved, with three different releases expected before 2004.

'Nirvana' is a compilation of their biggest hits alongside the last recording singer Kurt Cobain made with Grohl and bassist Krist Novoselic, 'You Know You’re Right'. A video will also be made, featuring previously unseen footage of the group.

'You Know You’re Right' was sent out to selected members of the press last week, a reaction to it being leaked onto the Internet last month. Radio stations played the song, and some were threatened with legal action.

On the day of the settlement, Grohl told NME.COM: "It’s interesting to be stuck in traffic and hear a DJ say ‘OK, coming up next it’s the new Nirvana'. That’s pretty wild."

The Foo Fighters frontman refused to blame anyone for deliberately leaking the song on the Internet. "That music was made for a reason – it was made for people to hear," he said. "I’m glad that song’s out, I’m glad that song has finally seen the light of day."

Asked about the Nirvana rarities album planned for 2003, Grohl commented: "I kind of know what’s going to be on it. There’s a lot of stuff no one’s ever heard."

Grohl also told NME.COM how ‘You Know You’re Right’ was recorded – and revealed that he had not even heard it for five years after that. "It was recorded in a studio in Seattle called Robert Lang’s, right down the street from my house," he said. "Nirvana had some time off in-between tours and we stopped down there to maybe demo some shit and that was the only thing we did. It was in early '94, a couple of months before Kurt died.

"I didn’t have a copy. I didn’t listen to it for maybe five years. Then as we started to put the box set together, I had a copy of a lot of the material in the box set and I listened to it. I thought ‘God! That doesn’t give me any sense of closure, that picks the scab a little bit’."

Am I the only one disappointed by this record? Instead of a full album of CD quality unheard material, it's just an album full of songs I've heard before and one song that's already been leaked over the net.

I'm a bigger Nirvana fan than most, but the only reason I'd be buying this CD was for the sleeve.

I look forward to it - wasn't a big enough fan to buy any albums beyond Nevermind, but I did like the songs that were on the radio, and they seem to be all here. I wonder which version of "About A Girl" will be - seems to me that was one that got a lot of play, was from their pre-Nevermind album (Bleach?) but the version that seemed to get played was from Unplugged.

You'll get your wish with next year's box-set.
I've got an idea for all: I've printed the tracklist, but instead of putting money in that whore, Courtney Love's pocket-download the songs for free.

The question is not, "Does love exist?"
But when she leaves, where she goes?
I got the feelin' she don't know either
Wait like the wind, watch where she blows

NIRVANA Leaked Track Listing 'Incorrect': COURTNEY LOVE's Manager - Oct. 10, 2002

It would appear Amazon jumped the gun with their catalog listing of the upcoming NIRVANA compilation. Courtney Love's manager James Barber confirmed to Australia's Undercover that the Amazon track listing published earlier this week is incorrect, but added that the "remastering is incredible, especially for the Sub Pop-era and Nevermind material". He also confirmed that the track listing for the album will vary from country to country and stated that "there will be a bonus track in Australia".

The release date for the album has been moved forward after the leak of the single "You Know You're Right" on the Internet.

The album, to simply be called Nirvana, will now be released on October 29th.
