There are 2 types of Christian music: 1) Michael W Smith type stuff, where they play normal pop/rock, but with Christian messages. That stuff is ok. 2)the OTHER type-the kind they sell on tv, showing 40,000 sheep waving their arms, eyes closed, feeling the power (of their $19.95 going out of their wallets I guess). That stuff makes my skin crawl. I hate that stuff as much as I hate that damn Muffin Man song.

No offense intended toward anyone, but that shit is spooky.

I've never heard it put so..... um, well I've never heard it said like that. Personally, I like that "waving their arms, eyes closed, feeling the power" type christian music. But that's because I think if your gonna make christian music, it shouldn't be an attempt at being pop/rock/country/rap/whatever. Man, right now, I'm listening to the only alternative christian station in my part of Oklahoma, and these dudes are sittin here, rappin and doin the whole bit. The turn tables, makin the "wickie, wickie" noise from a record. That stuff drives me nuts. I can stand rock/or at least something with an electric guitar, like Third Day or dc Talk. Anyways, back to the point, this music is suppose to give praise to God, not try to sell millions of records or be radio popular. Anyways, that's my take on it. And for the record I've never seen one of those ..........

"kind they sell on tv, showing 40,000 sheep waving their arms, eyes closed, feeling the power"

.... type of commercials. Oh well, good for me I guess.

Abe is one of the boards devout atheists too man so that sheep comment can be expected, no offense. Look at it all from an atheists point of view. I'm sure all us believers must look pretty silly.

Oh, that's ok Seenbad. I'm use to it by now. "Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matt 5.... verse 9 or 10, I don't remember. lol.

Nah, not ALL believers look silly to me...just the ones getting overwhelmed by the power and glory of some really lame music on a commercial. My opinion of it is based more on the fact that the music, to MY ears, is simply awful--like show-tunes for an all God Revue or something. I was never fond of hymns of any sort. Being raised Catholic, all I ever heard was some really DREARY stuff. So when I hear the ultra-formulaic Rah Rah Go God Go stuff, it makes me cringe. As I said, Christian-based lyrics in 'normal' music is fine by me, but there's just something about the way the 'other' music is written that disagrees with my gastro-intestinal tract. It's more the actual music itself than the content.

My girlfriend is one of those sheep-people, by the way.

And calling me a devout atheist may not be QUITE accurate-I actually think we have a huge moral void in our country that it seems only religion can fill, so I'm generally all for religion. It just isn't for me. I AM a heathen, ya know!

aw I hear ya, ya heathen. Remember also that music is based on emotion, and its purely relative. If you cant feel it, you cant hear it and will never enjoy it.

I know what you mean by some of it sounding like bad showtunes though. The actual structure in some of it is pretty blah.

That was meant as a joke, in response to Seenbad's explanation of calling us or me or whoever "sheep waving their arms, eyes closed, feeling the power"..... and I'll admit, I did find that funny. Even if you are making fun of the way I worship our God. All is cool though.

I don't have a problem with music with Christian overtones to it. Everything is fair game in music. I've I've always been creeped out by that pure contemporary Christian music. And believe me, I've seen that sheep arms waving eyes closed commercial Abe was talking about.

Wow--touchy subject here.

Personally, I enjoy Michael W Smith's music. He's got a lot of different sides (pop, light contemporary, dance) but the message comes through loud and clear WITHOUT shoving religion down your throat.

I grew up Pentecostal so those arm wavers were all around me, and even sometimes me. It's a spiritual thing--you start praising God and your arms reach towards the heavens. With some it's genuine, with others it's strictly for show. Only God knows for sure. I try not to worry about who's a true beleiver and who's a fake. Sheep? Well, Jesus did refer to himself as a Sheperd and his followers as the flock. So I guess if you put it that way...BAAAHHHH!

Call me whatever you what, but following Christ is a personal decision I made many years ago. Since then, I've experienced peace, fulfillment, and a love unlike anything this earth has to offer. Am I perfect? Nah--far from it. I blow it every day. But I AM forgiven, because of the blood that Jesus shed on the cross for my sins.

The only Christian rock group I ever found to sound good was "Jars of Clay".
CHICAGO WHITE SOX - 2005 WORLD CHAMPIONS

The Chicago White Sox (1901-present) - The Original SOX - Proof

The Boston Americans (1901)
The Boston Somersets (1902)
The Boston Pilgrims (1903-1906)
The Boston Red Sox (1907-present) - Proof

The Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets whatever you want to call them, have NEVER displayed "SOX" anywhere on their caps, jerseys, or merchandise, therefore they shouldn't be referred to as such. However, the White Sox have used "SOX" since 1912.

The SOX are in Chicago...we just allow the Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets to use the name.
