At the beginning - what are they doing? Is that keyboards or something Pete's doing with his guitar? Everytime this song comes on I fixate on that, it's awesome. One of those thing that if someone tried to do it today they'd over-process the heck out of it, probably put some "scratchin'" in it or something. But back then - awesome! But what the hell is it?

it's the same technique used on won't get fooled again:

pete plays a synthesiser/keyboard through an AC voltage sweeper. that's why it cuts in and out so fast. it's a cool process even now but considering this was when synthesisers were first being widely used it's awesome.

I run the old fiddle through an MXR Phase 90 turned down slow, ala EVH. Add a little reverb and the fogies think it sounds like the record.

I read somewhere that the sequence was produced by feeding into a synth 'vital statisics' of a person - Height, weight etc - in this case Petes 'spiritual guide' at the time, some dude called Meher (sp?) Baba, and thats how this particular sound was originated.

Pete intended to expand on the idea by doing the same thing on stage - feeding a crowd members vital stats in and producing something different, but it wasnt ever attempted.

this was part of the "Lifehouse" project. it was pete's idea that the audience would become part of the film and the music and that it would continue to grow over time, with new additions made all the time.

You can play it on guitar. It can be kind fo tough, but I've heard guitar players do it:

Keep repeating this line, palm muted
    -----------------------------------------
    ----------6-6----------------------------
    ------5-5-----5-5------------------------
    --3-3------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------
    -----------------------------------------

While it's playable, it's much easier to use a delay pedal for the repeats
