I know nothing about the guitar but, I was listening to "Slip of the Tounge" by Whitesnake. I think he ruined that album. I thought Vivvian Cambell had more "balls"...........but what do I know?????>

I don't agree with you, Steve Vai is awesome on that album.

Vivian didn't even record with Whitesnake, he just toured with them. So how does he have more balls? LOL!

Love 'SOTT' - Vai is awesome on the album, however some of the guitar sounds a little thin here and there........not Vai's fault methinks.

Vai was probably my fave guitarist at the
time, but even I thought his tone sucked
and that the album was nowhere near as
    good as the previous release...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Vandenburg had a broken arm and Vai was hired to cut guitar to the already recorded tracks as to turn the cd in on time for the big marketing push since Whitesnake was huge at the time and they couldn't stop and wait for Adrian. Vai saved the day and was paid handsomly.

That's correct. Vai played all of the guitar parts on that one.

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought they left his name off the liner notes by mistake!!!! I was judging from his work with Dio.I always thought he had a really "ballsy" sound.

You either like Steve or you don't. The problem with that whole album is that it was recorded piecemeal so it liked a groove.

    My thoughts:

    1) a young Vivian Campbell had somewhat sh*tty tone, but great raunchy playing. Very devlish. Correct, never heard on a Whitesnake album.

    2) Vai was *good enough* for most of the tracks on that album, but his tone indeed sucked. It was agressive yet limp. Sad.

    3) Vai's "whitesnake tone" sucked compared to John Sykes', and so did his playing. Sykes is the ultimate Whitesnake guitarist. He played the whole "Whitesnake" album, with the exception of the "Here I Go Again" solo, which was Vandenberg. Other than that solo, Vandenberg did not appear on any Whitesnake albums

    4) it is my personal belief that Vandenberg actually wasn't injured during the recording of the album. Supposedly he was using a piano exercise consisting of "flapping his wrists" up and down, which caused some stress trauma to his wrist tendons.

    I don't buy it.

It was a "guitarist's market" at the time, and Coverdale played the market in spades. Vai agreed to do the album only under the condition that he had complete control to record all guitar parts at his (then) revoluitionary 64 track home studio (which he did....this is why he sounds like he's floating around), and Vandenberg, who was considered a souless speed hack, would support during the tour.

That's not confirmed, but that's how I see it. I don't believe that Vandenberg was injured for one minute. There isn't an injury you can sustain by flapping your wrists that would last longer than a month, trust me.

If you know anything about Coverdale, it's that he's the MASTER businessman.

After his band completed the 'Whitesnake' album (1987), he fired the whole band and hired replacements for touring and video purposes. This is how Vandenberg and Campbell got their jobs.

Coverdale is talented, but he's truly soul-less.
