Am I the only one that thinks that Richie Kotzen, should be a huge star. While yes, he has played with 80's bands Poison and Mr. Big...his solo stuff is just incredible and there are not many artists out there...as versatile as Richie. Sort of the white Lenny Kravitz. Awsome guitar player and even a better vocalist. Richie can do all...rock, jazz, blues, soul, etc. etc. etc. Check out Vertu...an album that he did with Stanley Clarke. Kotzen fans...chime in!!!

I've been a Kotzen fan for YEARS! I think his playing on the Poison album was outstanding, and his solo stuff is great too. He's an incredible singer who can play the guitar like a virtuoso. His rock blues chops and TONE are the best. I own one of his old Marshalls (a 1971 100 watt Marshall Super Lead). He said he used that amp at the Poison audition and the Mother Head's Family Reunion CD. In fact, you can see the amp pictured with his other Marshalls on the inside of that CD.

I think Kotzen is an awesome guitarist... Why doesn't Dave seek out someone like him to record/write songs with? Get him in the band, and just let the guy fucking rip! As far as I am concerned, virtuosity has been missing from Dave's solo work since Skyscraper. Not that Jason Becker didn't have the chops, but IMO most of ALAE was just light blues-rock fluff and generic main stream guitar riffs. "Tell The Truth" sounds like an Alannah Myles retread or something...

Richie Kotzen is an amazing talent. He has almost the perfect blend of technique, taste, and good songwriting capabilities. I'm not too into his 'shredder' days, but I really like what he's been doing the last 5 years or so. He's new release Slow, should be released here in the states within the next month or so. Great topic!

I love this thread! Kotzen is an amazing muscian and guitar player. I don't know if anyone in America is aware of this, but Kotzen is a huge name in Japan. As a matter of fact, he has a few albums that actually were released ONLY in Japan. Plus when he joined up with Mr. Big (another huge Japanese favorite), he open more doors over there. IMHO, Richie would never need Dave for this purpose. He is writing music that he likes and doesn't need a personality to "boost" his career.

Has anyone ever listened to the Greg Howe/Kotzen records? They are purely guitar solo songs, but it shows how amazing both those guys really are. Greg Howe is another insanely underrated player. Greg and Richie are both masters at playing very obscure and arcane passing tones. That's why I love them!

P.S. Electric Joy is one of my favorite albums of all time!

    Well,
I only heard Richie's playing in Mr.Big replacing Paul Gilbert.
He blended well with Eric Martin's soul songs~
Mr.Big's final album "Actual Size" is impressive.

    You can say that again!!
I have that album and his Vertu album which is more in the jazz reign and pretty good. And I have one of the Howe/Kotzen albums which are impressive but slighly too much for my tastes.

He's a good guitar player. I didn't like his album with Poison, I don't think he was a good fit in that band.

But I thought he was great in Mr. Big!!!! The last album that he did Actual Size is awesome! It's a shame that the band just recently broke up.
