Was in Eckerd tonight (drug store like Walgreens - which seems to always occupy the opposite corner here in Florida) and at the checkout counter they had a display for the CD The Best Of George Harrison and also The Beatles 1 - I dunno, seems like someone's trying to make a buck off the death of George - either Eckerds or whoever supplies them with their CDs - they always have CDs at the counter but it's not like they have a full blown music section and The Best of George Harrison would never occupy that counter under other circumstances. Now maybe Eckerds is donating some of the proceeds to some charity or something - that I don't know, but I just don't know if it's appropriate for those CDs to be there.

Well, there is an element of greed there, but of course most retailers realize that many people WILL be looking for George/Beatles stuff because of Georges death..

So, if you were out there and wanted to find stuff of his, they are making it accessible.
On the flip side, they are also taking advantage of the opportunity to make more $$ off of Georges death...

I bought a nice Beatles book, tons of great pics in it, at Walmart the other day (!!) for 9 bucks..then again, I woulda bought it whether George had died or not...

Costco suddenly had an entire display of Beatles CD's on sale last week. I hadn't seen Beatles CD's there since the Anthology series was released in 1996. Oddly enough, they also had a few Lennon & McCartney solo albums, but none of George's stuff. But most of it is out of print at the moment unfortunately I actually picked up the "Wingspan" thing, thinking a 2 disc set for $12.99 would be a good deal. Let's put it this way... It's properly priced at $12.99, because about 1 whole CD's worth of material is actually good. Unfortunately, it's spread out over both discs. Guess I'm gonna have to rip em on Real Jukebox and burn a one disc version of the good shit for the car....

Costco down the road from ya, (here) had the beatles 1 album there since last summer im mass quanitity fyi. I know you guys up there have your own pace with things though

Is it wrong? Tough call. I can see where it would make you feel like soundboarding off us. Depends on your viewpoint I guess. It depends on if its a supply and demand response, or if its greed motivated. I'm sure its probably the latter in which case its pretty shamefull.

Here's one for the flip side;

Putting these in the forefront will sell more CD's, in turn making money that may not normally be made for the Harrison estate. Why not let the family has one more surge in record sales and income from the family patriarch? Who's to say that they did not ask for it? For all we know these sales alone may send grandchildren through college. This is a position that the family will never be in again.

I agree. The Jackson family could use an extra buck or two.

lol... You are correct about much of the Beatles stuff, but I was indeed referring to the George stuff mentioned in the 1st post. You can call the MJ whatever you want, but he is a witty little freak.

off the subject a tad, I heard McCartney on Stern a couple weeks ago...great guy. Back when he and MJ were tight with that pop song they made, Paul gave Mike the financial advice of buying music. Mike came back ...as a joke, saying "Gee Paul, maybe I should buy some of YOUR music " :fairy:. The rest is history.

Btw, your previous point is good. Nothing wrong with the family making an extra buck or two. Its the root cause of the records in fron that bugs me, not the effect.

If I remember correctly, Lennon & McCartney got a higher percentage of royalties on the album sales. And of course, the majority of the publishing is going to Michael Jackson, as George only had 1 or 2 songs per album. So unfortunately, I don't see this as a huge revenue windfall for the estate.

In a few months, when the solo catalog is rereleased (you know it's inevitable) they will do better.
