Here's a review of the Dokken/Whitesnake/Scorpions show I worked last night.

Have no fear, 80's "hair metal" (I fucking hate that label) is still alive
and kicking. Dokken was the first act up last night, and played a 40 minute
set, including songs like "Breaking The Chains" (with Don on rhythm guitar),
"Into The Fire", and "Kiss Of Death". Don's voice is still in top form,
though he's obviously put on a few extra pounds. I saw no evidence of the
arrogant asshole he's purported to be, but then again, I don't have to work
with or for him. The guitarist he's hired to replace Reb Beach, Alex De
Ross, who was hired to replace George Lynch, is clearly no George Lynch.
I've only seen Dokken one other time, back in 1988 on Van Halen's "Monsters
Of Rock" festival, and I remember Lynch being all over the place, both in
person and guitar attitude. Still, it was enjoyable and Dokken was kind to
the audience, as I've heard he could be kind of an idiot to the crowds at
times. I spoke with him after his set, while Whitesnake were playing, and he
seemed genuinely kind, thanking me and giving me a pat on the back after I
complimented him on his performance.

Whitesnake's turn came, and it was a thunderous 65 minute set. For the
entire show, I was lucky enough to have a position about 3 feet from the
corner of stage left, so the amps were right next to me and they definitely
had the bass turned UP! David Coverdale's voice is still remarkable! All his
posturing, joking with the audience, flirting with the girls in the
audience, and poking fun at the band and crew solidified one thing in my
mind: he's the U.K.'s answer to David Lee Roth. But, unlike Roth, his voice
is still there. Whitesnake tore into "Here I Go Again", "Slide It In", "Slow
And Easy", and "Still Of The Night", just to name a few, with the same fire
and they did back in '87. Reb Beach and Doug Aldrich were great on guitar,
but where Reb was a "jump up, flashy-fingers" type of player, Doug
accomplished a lot more just kicking back and playing the somgs without
being too showy. When Coverdale intro'd the band, Aldrich received a bigger
reception fro the audience than Beach. And, Tommy Aldrich was a mad man on
the drums. He got the biggest response from the crowd that night. Coverdale
even "pulled a Roth" when, during one of the songs (I forgot which one), he
said, "I forgot the fuckin' words!" I was glad I worked last night. I have
never seen Whitesnake live and they didn't disappoint.

The Scorpions took the stage to "Coming Home", and a frenzied crowd. They
were a bit laid back than when I saw them in '88, but their music still has
that awesome sting to it. Klaus Meine was everywhere, and Matthias Jabs lit
his guitar on fire. During the intro to his solo he gave a nod to EVH and
played a few notes from "Eruption". What with him doing that, and Zakk Wylde
doing the same in his solo, seems to me there are a few artists trying to
say something. Scorps peppered their set with "Hit Between the Eyes", "Big
City Nights", "Tease Me, Please Me", "The Zoo", "Blackout", a few lines from
"Holiday (a capella) and "Bad Boys Running Wild". My dispappointment came
with the fact that, once again, they didn't play my favorite song "Can't
Live Without You". It was a blistering 80 minute set, and they, along with
Dokken and Whitesnake, went out and showed everyone that 80's metal can
still stand the test of time and go head-to-head with other music fads. The
band was unfortunately plagued with sound problems, forcing their drummer to
what seemed like an unscheduled, and extended, drum solo in order to correct
the problem(s). Klaus' mic went out a few times, their was what sounded like
a monitor going "BOOM!" towards the end of "Hit Between The Eyes", and a few
other minor things.

Highlights for me last night:

-Too many women trying too hard to pack too much into too little spandex.
Some of them should've been arrested for appearing in public looking the way
they did.
-Talking with Don Dokken, even if it was only for 2 minutes.
-Grabbing some dude who tried to hurl himself onto the stage right where I
was standing. He burst thru one of our ushers, broke thru the barricade
where I was standing, and got as far as the stack of speakers behind me the
artists were using to walk on before me and another guy tackled him to the
floor. He ended up with my knee on his head, his arms bent behind his back,
and a oneway ticket out of the show.
-2 guitar picks; one from Alex De Rosso of Dokken and another from Marco
Mendoza of Whitesnake. The last one is nice; it's a white pearl pick with
the Whitesnake logo embossed in gold. Very nice!

To anyone asking if it's worth going to see, I recommend it. You'll have a
great time. I know I did, and am right now....I have Whitesnake's and
Scorpion's set on MD. Both came thru crystal clear, and I'm listening to the
Scorpions set as I type this.

Lol at the Coverdale/Roth comparison. When I saw the tour here in SW Florida TECO Arena, Coverdale was all over the place! He seemed to be enjoying the breasts too! He actually made jokes about them a couple of times, like "Ahem, ladies, (in that hilarious accent) Don't hesitate to show your breasts!" or something along those lines.

As for performances, all 3 bands can still deliver great shows and it's great that they're on the road together. Maybe Don's not such a dick anymore...or did he just HATE George?

I was looking most forward to the Scorps but I think Whitesnake pulled off the best show. The Scorps just didn't have that energy that they used to. They still rocked though!
Right Now...My gf is probably reading my posts.

Your review was pretty much what I would expect from those bands. It's not a knock but after all these years, you know what you're getting..which is kick ass rock and roll!!!

I can't wait! I'm hopefully going to the Syracuse show if my buddy Mark can take me. We'll have to see. I am catching Dokken on a rare solo set at a club in Buffalo, though, so that'll be good. I love that band. I've heard mixed reviews about Alex, but I think Barry Sparks, the bassist, is a good addition. Don claims to have quit smoking, but he says that a lot. Last time I saw them a year ago, he was smoking all set and his voice was pretty worn out. He was really pissed off the whole first part of the set, because of the sound guy. The negativity rubbed off on the crowd for awhile, but he lightened up.

P.S...Anyway you can put a few of those songs on mp3. I'd love to hear them to get pumped up.

Geez. I wish Don would quit the smoking. It is always a let down when a singer can't hit the notes he used to.

I saw 2 shows in South Florida 2 weeks ago, and the Scorpions were excellent! If you want to see a good show at a decent price, check out this tour. Next to VH, I have never seen a better band live in concert than the Scorps!

I've had my reservations about Coverdale in
the past, but after this tour maybe he should give Ed a call, huh?
I mean, realisitically, who else is there?
And don't give that Sebastian Bach or Joan
fucking Jett crap, either.
