According to my 'Best Of Rainbow' CD liner, Dio's first band experience was with a group called The Vegas Kings (as the bass player, interestingly enough), formed in 1957. Yes, 1957. So the math bears out that this guy's been rockin' for 45 years.

Some thoughts:

- Dio was 33 when his first high-profile work ('Rainbow') was released in late 1975

- Dio was 42 when his best (IMO) album ('The Last In Line') was releaed in 1984

- The 60 year old man's current release of original music is charted on Billboard and selling well for a genre that's presumed dead

I'm looking forward to seeing the old man scream his guts out at Concord Pavilion a couple weeks from now

Dio was great tonight

Walked in during "Killing The Dragon" (show opener), and got to hear some personal faves like "Stand Up And Shout" and "Holy Diver". Highlight for me was "Heaven And Hell".

Dio looks the same as ever, and still has amazing projection for 60. He got up on the stacks and whipped up the crowd during "Long Live Rock And Roll".

Biggest bummer was not getting "Last In Line"

Because of the dark tone of both his catalog and his voice, Dio probably won't be well-remembered. But he is truly one of the great rock vocalists of all time. Definitely Top 15 and possibly Top 10.

If this show is still coming to your town, you owe it to go see this guy.

The Real Deal

PS: Deep Purple & The Scorpions were also solid tonight

60 huh! Are you sure? Didn't think the man was that old. He has the best metal voice. It has that evil element.

Just did some research. Mr. Dio was born in 1948. He is not 60 years old!

My Billboard Top Albums book also says Dio was born in 1949, but if this is the case, then he was playing bass in a professional band at age 8. I'm sorry, but I think the 1949 thing is a typo, because the dates listed for his first band are confirmed.

1942, on the other hand, is not a stretch...

This whole argument kinda reminds me of the Little League scandal from last year...weird...

According to allmusic.com (a pretty good source), Dio was born 7/10/49 in Portsmouth, NH.
"There's a Japanese term called wabi-sabi, not wasabi, but wabi-sabi. It means an appreciation for the imperfect, the less than precision. The cowboy boots that you never polish because it's bad luck. That is completely wabi-sabi. Van Halen is that." - DLR 2002<br /><br />"Look! I can see their parachutes! They're ok..." - Tenshinhan, DragonBall Z
