I think in the Rock/Metal genre that most people on this site listen a great song would be one whick you crack a smile when you here it and close a fish and rise it when its finished!!

Thats what good music does to me!!!

There are many of these songs but some of my fav's are

    *Rock N roll children (Dio)

    *Right Now (van halen)

    *Turn on thre night (kiss)

    *November Rain (GnR)

*Kickstart my heart and Misunderstood (motley crue)

We may have talked about this before, but how exactly can one define true quality in music?

Is great music difficult for experienced musicians to play and nearly impossible for a beginner?

Are great songs ones everyone knows the words to?

Are songs only great if they don't have acceptance by the unwashed masses?

There must be some real baseline for discernible quality in popular music...Let's find it.
    Can't stop...addicted to the shindig...

What constitutes a "great song" is utterly subjective and depends entirely upon the individual tastes and sensibilities of the listener.

For my money, what makes a great song is an irresistible melody, a groove that no matter how many thousands of times you hear it, always has you reaching to crank up the volume knob, sing along (provided there are vocals... not a necessity for some of us!) and totally lose yourself in the music. It's all about communication in the end... communicating an idea or emotion to someone totally unknown and removed from the artist who created it, when you can do that, you've nailed it.

Some songs that I really connect with that way are:

Unchained - This should hardly require explanation to anyone here.
Little Wing (either Jimi's, Stevie's or Andy's versions will do...)
For the Love of God - Steve Vai (anyone who says this guy doesn't play with emotion is tone deaf!)
Riviera Paradise - SRV (very probably the most beautiful and perfect electric guitar piece ever, IMHO)
Mentally Yours - Savatage (one of the all-time great metal riffs)
Flyin' High Again - not just a song, an attitude!
Wish You Were Here - something about singing this at the top of my lungs with 80,000+ other people just made a lasting impression on me...

I could go on and on, but you catch my drift, right?

Hmmm... seeing as I really like epic tracks... here's some longer tunes that I consider as masterpieces and that have had a great influence on me.....

    Deep Purple Child In Time
(10 minutes of majestic instrumental sections and Gillan screaming his ass off... classic and sooo good!)

    Black Sabbath War Pigs
(from the intro to the last second this song's a killer... especially when you add Geezer's dark lyrics!)

    Led Zeppelin Kashmir
(do I really have to add anything to it?! it's hard rock meets world music... probably the best piece of music Pagey and Jonesy have ever written... athmospheric as hell!)

    Queen Bohemian Rhapsody
(Freddie's true opus magnum... which features 256 vocal tracks just in the operatic section... give it a listen and you'll know what I mean!)

    Rainbow Stargazer
(another masterpiece by Ritchie and Dio... 8 minutes... with orchestral sections etc... the drum intro by Cozy simply rules... it's nothing but great!)

Iron Maiden Hallowed Be Thy Name
(this song's like a film running in your head... you can almost experience how the wrongly imprisoned guy feels!)

    Whitesnake Still Of The Night
(wow wow wow... killer riff by John Sykes... and Coverdale screaming his balls off... nice song for a summer night when it's dark outside... I really dig the keyboard part by Don Airey in the middle!)

Dio All The Fools Sailed Away
(the real masterpiece by Dio the band... Craig Goldy's riffing his ass off... nice keys by Claude Schnell... very athmospheric... I also like the lyrics a lot!)

A great song is something that blows your mind the first time you hear it and still has that same intensity and impact after the millionth listen.

I agree, SBS...Heck, I think the Go-Go's make "great" music...That may have something to do with my adolescent Belinda Carlisle obsession, but they have a few catchy tunes, don't they?*LOL*
