If anyone is even a casual Tool fan, go see them in concert! Of course, I think there tour is winding down now, but see them sometime! I just saw them last night here in Albany and it was flat out amazing. You can tell that they are very influenced by Pink Floyd with their 'mind expanding' stage shows. They had 2 huge video screens above them showing their own 'interpretations' of the songs. Some really whacked out stuff, very much like their videos.
They played a lot of their hits, 'Schism', 'Stinkfist', 'Aenema', 'Lateralus', and many more. Surprisingly they didn't play anything from 'Opiate' or 'Undertow', there first two albums!

Has anyone else here seen these guys in concert? What did you all think?

I actually saw the Black Crowes the night before, and although I'm a big Crowes fan, their stage show wasn't have as impressive as Tool's (I even got a guitar pick from the Crowes!)

They didn't play anything from Undertow? That's one of their best albums.

I'm a pretty big Tool fan but I haven't seen them live yet. I think they're coming to Portland in November but I don't know if I'm going.

I went to a Tool show on Sept. 9th at the Allstate Arena in Chicago. It was my first time seeing them and I must say that I was blown away! Maynard sounds just as good if not better than he has on the studio albums. The guy has incredible power and range. Oh, and the women, there were so many gorgeous women in the audience. Here's the setlist...

1. The Grudge
2. (-) Ions
3. Stinkfist
4. Forty-Six & 2
5. Undertow
6. Schism
7. Eulogy
8. Disposition
9. Reflection
10. Parabol
11. Parabola
12. Eon Blue Apocalypse
13. The Patient
14. Aenema
15. Lateralus

...the show is a must, don't miss it!

They take themselves waaaaay too seriously...

Lighten up Francis...

And besides...they suck!

Just my opinion though...whatever floats your boat, I'm just sick of all this "Doom and Gloom" crap that's out now...

True they do take themselves very seriously.

But I think part of their message is to lighten up. Some of their songs deal with not taking our society too seriously, and realize it for what it really is. They deal with expanding your mind/thoughts/perceptions on the world and not to be pigeonholed by who society wants you to be.

The only song I can think of that is a real 'doom and gloom' song would be Aenema, which describes the fake reality of LA/Hollywood.

If you don't like Pink Floyd or other 'mind-expanding' music then you most likely don't like Tool either. I can see how it could get you a little down, but that's why you have bands like VH to listen to also. There is a place for Tool in the music world, and a very large one I believe.

Not to mention the backing music is kickass!!

I went to see TOOL in Madison in early Sept.and it was one of the best shows I've seen. Great set list (they played Prison Sex from Undertow and Opiate at the show I went to). I thought Stinkfist, 46 & 2, Parabol/Parabola and Lateralus were the highpoints.

I do not think TOOL takes themselves too seriously. There music is serious and dark, which is how they want it to sound, but the message they send is better than any other hard rock band around...
I went to the show expecting my usual crowd of teenage mal contents, and a band that played to their obnoxious attitude. What happened was Maynard sending a message anyone could agree with. Between songs he said "remember this experience tonight..whether you loved it or hate it, try to make something positive out of it". Great message to send to an arena full of teenage mal contents...unlike other manufactured rage bands that pretend to be pissed all the time. They don't take themselves too seriously, they are serious enough to the point that they leave it in the music but still send a good message.

great band.
great concert.
