Heard a song that I think was Sting when I was on hold today and could only think to myself, "How did it all go wrong?" Sting was cool when he was in the Police, but solo, he's a big disappointment. Not sales wise, I'm sure - a lot of people like seem to like what he's doing or else he probably wouldn't be doing it. But how do you go from the Police to making the kind of music he's making now? Same goes for Phil Collins. His first few solo albums were okay, but lately he's just one step away from Muzak most of the time. Anyway, what other bands/musicians can you guys think of that have gotten so far away from where they began? Paul Weller would probably be another, but he's lesser known.

Got to disagree with you on the Sting thing.

The Police absolutely rocked IMHO, but when it ended it ended.

Solo Sting is fantastic, (with the exception of his latest) just as long as you don't expect the Police.

I do agree on the Phil Collins observations.

I don't like Sting at all! He has been consistantly bad IMO.

The last Phil Collins album I bought was Both Sides and it was very good.

I heard his last album wasn't very good though, and his remake of True Colours was pretty average for his Best Of album. So I guess he has slipped a bit.

    Clapton.

Pretty weak nowadays, actually he's been pretty weak since he left Cream.

I can only think of a handful of really great songs that Paul McCartney has done since the Beatles. I know it sounds REALLY obvious to say, but he needed Lennon there to keep him from the middle of the road. Clearly a man of IMMENSE talent, but it rarely turned into great songs after the Beatles.

I'd have to agree with all of the above, especailly Sting.
It's one thing to find new and exciting sounds and texture to write, it's another to get bland as you can.

I'd add Elton John to this list, although I never cared for him much, his songs were much more dynamic in the 70's.

I agree on the Sting thing as well. Just the other day they replayed the Police Behind the Music and I gave my wife my "why did Sting want to leave a great band to make mediocre music" rant for the 10th time. I've heard a couple of decent songs from him solo, but generally any tension and quality is gone in my opinion.

As far as Elton John goes, I just find that his voice is gone, it's just a shadow of what it once was.

Another artist who has gone downhill is Bryan Adams. Now, he was never writing Shakespeare, but his last few albums have been terrible. 18 Til I Die is a pathetic song, and when I saw his song title called "I Wanna Be Your Underwear" I nearly died. And crap like that song he did with Sting and Rod Stewart, the guy is like a human money machine with no soul.

I have to disagree with Paul McCartney. Though his solo music may not have been up to the same par as the Beatles (though neither were any of the others'), it was pretty much the same style as what he did with the Beatles, and he did have some great songs in there and some underrated stuff I think. I do agree with Elton John and also Bryan Adams to some extent - and I had pretty much the same reaction to the same song on 18 'til I Die - ugh!
