This is a great question. It's hard because you naturally think of songs that you would recognize, as opposed to ones that would be familiar to everyone. Here's my list of ten that would be familiar to alot of people.

    1. We Will Rock You-Queen
    2. Jump-Van Halen
    3. Satisfaction-The Rolling Stones
    4. Jumpin' Jack Flash-The Rolling Stones
    5. Start Me Up-The Rolling Stones
    6. Stairway to Heaven-Led Zeppelin
    7. Johnny B. Goode-Chuck Berry
    8. Like a Rolling Stone-Bob Dylan
    9. A Hard Day's Night-The Beatles
    10. Jailhouse Rock-Elvis Presley

How could I forget Satsifaction and Jailhouse Rock?! Maybe Honky Tonk Woman and Hound Dog. I thought about Cat Scratch Fever, Tom Sawyer, Barracuda, You Really Got Me(but Jump is better for this), Paradise City, and Paranoid. I forgot to say only one song per artist. Sorry about that.

    That was annoying wasn't it?

I agree that it's very recognizable, but I don't personally think it's in the top 15. Maybe top 20-25. But that's just me. And Redfire's right about Smoke On The Water by Deep Purple. That's one of the most easily-defined opening guitar lines I've ever heard.

    Satisfaction - The Stones
    Stairway to Heaven - Zeppelin
Damn near anything by the Beatles
We Will Rock You - Queen
Unchained - Van HALEN (personal bias here )
Friends In Low Places - Garth Brooks
Anything the Beach Boys made 1962 through 1966
    Wild Thing - The Troggs
    My Sharona - The Knack
Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus (yeah I hate it too, but everybody knows it)
Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
Staying Alive - Bee Gees (and yes, it hurt to admit that )
Rock n Roll PT II - Gary Glitter - heard at damn near every sporting event on earth, and apparently a major influence on Sammy's tequila commercial.

    Fuck, that's enough.

As you can see, the most recognizable songs are not ALWAYS the best songs. Nor are they always by the biggest bands. A few one hit wonders in there

Of course, the most recognizable English speaking song ever written is: "Happy Birthday"....

As far as popular artists in rock and roll, there are many...Most have already been accounted for in previous posts in this thread.

I will add one that haven't been mentioned:

    1. Beethoven's 5th Symphony First Movement

You all are forgetting a song most everyone that is 13-40 years of age would surely know.

It starts with a memorable whistling and mentions such geographical locations as Gorky Park.

The band will really sting if you're not paying attention.

    Give up?

How about "Winds of Change" by the Scorpions?

As for songs by Bon Jovi, I'd say people would probably recognize You Give Love a Bad Name and Livin' on a Prayer more readily.

But seriously, the most recognizable songs would probably be things like Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and so on. Heard one period of time each year, but everyone knows the word.

Yeah, no one seems to like Happy Birthday. But it's really known a lot But songs like The Edge of Seventeen by Stevie Nicks and Axel F. by Harold Faltermeyer come to mind.
