No, not the movie, but one of the greatest bands in American history!!

These guys just flat out rocked. Paul Westerburg is still churning out great albums since they split up in '91.

Anybody else get into them. I can honestly say it would be a shame if you never gave them a listen.

I love the replacements man! Thing is I prefer "All Shook Down" and Paul Westerberg's solo stuff (ASD was basically a solo album anyway from what I've heard) to the early stuff, which is a little ramshackle to say the least. They certainly had the attitude though. Great great songwriter...

Wow TDR, I don't know many who prefer "All Shook Down". It's a cool album and you are right, it was basically a Paul solo record.

My favs are "Pleaded To Meet Me" and "Don't Tell A Soul". Ah, who am I kidding, I love 'em all!

I think "Eventually" was Paul's best album. I'm still baffled they never made it.

I know that the early stuff is regarded as classic, but for some reason I just couldn't get my head around it. I got, erm, Let it be? That was supposed to be THE classic right? But I preferred ASD. I guess I was old before my time...

...have I missed out on some better stuff, then?

"Pleased To Meet Me" is my favorite.
"Tim" is worth a listen for you. That was their major label debut.

I agree, their early stuff like "Hootnanny" and "Let It Be" is a bit tough to listen to... undadulterrated drunk-pop-punk with a few sweet unpolished ballads.

I just love the mid to late 80's albums the best.

Are you missing out? I think you'd like "Tim","Pleased to Meet Me", and "Don't Tell A Soul" in that order. You are getting major label sound production. I love "Let It Be", but I wouldn't start anyone out on that album if they were just getting into them.

Let me do this Metallica reference if I may.

"ASD" is to the "Black" album
as "Pleased To Meet Me" is to "Master of Puppets"

I love the Mats. They were one of my all time favorites. They have great songs on every disc, but I really think they hit their stride on "Tim" and "Pleased to Meet Me." Angst and yearning before Nirvana made it cool. In a perfect world they would have been huge, but their outsider status really fit them. Great songs, great lyrics, makes you wanna sip on a beer, smoke a Marlboro and watch the leaves fall. I really love Left of the Dial, Swingin Party, Valentine, Skyway/Can't Hardly Wait, aw screw it, I could go on and on. I saw them in concert on the last tour they did (all shook down)I think Paul and Tommy Stinson were the only original guys left, but they were good, played all the classics, and they even switched instruments on Hootenany. I still listen to these guys all the time. Great stuff, they really take me back. Four stars.

HH: the replacements were awesome, I like ASD, and was turned on to them when I was in college in the late 80's. I saw their last show together at The Taste of Chicago in 1991. They were playing their set,and near the end their roadies grabbed their instruments and replaced them. That was it. It was a great show outside, with the sun cooking the fans, and beer flowing.

Hey what the hell's wrong with "Let It Be"?? I love that album. Especially their cover of "Black Diamond"

Ironic that the 'Mats were splitting up right when the music they inspired was taking over the airwaves.

Hey.... Just got an idea for the next thread...

Yeah, I thought, and hoped, that the Minneapolis music scene ('Mats, Husker Du, Soul Asylum, Gear Daddies, Jayhawks) would have takin' over the world in the laste '80's instead of Seattle in the early '90's.

Then again, I like the fact that all that great music is still kinda mine, y'know?
