Scott Weiland is a good vocalist and performer, but I think DLR beats him out. His energy and charisma make up for voice, which isn't very strong IMO. Of course I'm biased because I'm a VH fan, though.

Scott Weiland is the best frontman of all time in every single way possible! He is a fucking amazing singer! His voice is in top form. He has a great sense of melody and cohesiveness. His lyrics are brilliant and masterful. He is great in concert too and can really get the crowd going. STP is the best band of all time. They have written some of the best songs of all time. In fact, I am listening to No. 4 as we speak. They are the greatest roc band of all time IMHO. They will go down as legends.

And have they gone down on your mom?

STP will (has?) fade into obscurity. Stories will be told about VH and DLR for as long as rock and roll has fans.

If that is so, than VH is even deeper into a pit of obscurity. Does the public even care about VH anymore? And when has consumer popularity equaled quality?

I just don't see that happening. Sorry. Maybe if they weren't such a fucking soap opera and didn't keep their fans in wonder all the time.

Seeing as how DLR is 48 and my sister is 16, I find that disgusting to think about.

You're the one who brought popularity into it. From a historical point of view, VH changed an entire music scene and spawned a bevy of imitators. These current troubles are just a small part of the story. You may be too young to appreciate that yet.

16 year old sisters? I hear Gene Simmons has known a few of those.

I don't see where I put popularity in it unless you intrepreted me saying them as going down as legends as populariy. I don't care if Vh spawned more followers, I still think in my opinion that Stp is better. It's just my opinion and I don't understand how having imitations of you makes you better. Everyone has an opinion and mine is usually contrary to others. It might seem odd at a Van Halen board for someone to say that another band is better. The original question is kinda one sided at a Vh board, don't take offense wolfie.

Maybe I can help you remember what you typed a few moments ago, then:

    That help?

When we speak of how legendary a band will be (STP might not even be curturally remembered in 20 years), we have to look at its influence on music. STP may be a solid band, but there have been thousands of solid bands the last 40 years. How many bands have there been like Van Halen?

David Lee Roth was a big part of Van Halen's success. Simply because of that he'll be remembered.

When it comes to something like this, individual opinions like yours and mine don't really matter that much. History'll have one all of its own, and that's the one most people will see.

Lets try to keep some perpsective here. The general public doesn't consider VH to be as legendary as we do. Any way you cut it, they're not (according to consensus) #1. If you want to go "Greatest American Rock Band", Aerosmith will always win the majority. If you go "Greatest Hard Rock Band", there's Zep.

I think if you consider things as objectively as possible, you have VH (the band) as a highly important cog in American hard rock. EVH (the guitar player) was revolutionary in his technique, but the overall music of the band wasn't AS revolutionary.

With STP, you have no individual performer as remarkable as EVH, but the band itself was a highly imporant cog in the alternative rock scene that displaced hair metal in the early 90s.

As someone who was a kid in the early 90s, I gotta tell you that when we hit our 30s, the bands we'll be remembering and lamenting about will be the alternative bands that came of age at the same time that we did (Pearl Jam, STP, Collective Soul, Nirvana, etc).

And just to address the original question for this thread... DLR over Weiland. I have no love for anyone who gains notoriety by way of a criminal rap sheet.

I think Weiland and STP could have been a great rock band. "Core" and "Purple" are two of my favorite rock albums. But I don't consider anything they've made since then to be remarkable, and I think each album has gotten weaker since Purple. They have one or two good songs on them and everything else is filler, IMO.

Yeah, putting a "Dave vs. Anyone" or "VH vs. Anyone" topic on a VH message board is one-sided. Even so, Dave is by far the better frontman. Weiland has gotten a little bizarre in his stage antics the past few years, if you ask me. I don't know if it's the drugs or what, but he has turned into one strange cat.

Also, I think Weiland is to the point now where he'll be remembered more for his struggles with drugs and the police than for his music, and that's too bad.

Agreed. Though, I thought "Sour Girl" was a good track, until it got played to death.

Their latest album was absolutely no good.

I'd also bet that it's a combination of drugs and personalities messing with the music. Probably also has a lot to do with the fact that the fire is gone. Something political like grunge is difficult to maintain if you're a multi-millionaire. That's why I had nothing but respect for Rage (before they broke up)-- they kept the fire lit.

Personally, I can't wait until the next big sound hits. You know it's gotta be soon. There's only so long that this self-indulgent "Kid Rock" type crap can go on.

STP is a good band but I don't think that they are or will ever be in the same league as the greatest rock bands of all time. Come on, STP had two really good albums (Core and Purple) and then they faded into mediocrity. Of their last three albums, none of them are nearly as impressive. Sure, they were one of the best grunge bands to come out in the 90's, but I doubt that they will be remembered like Zeppelin, Sabbath, VH, or AC/DC.
