(12/17/01, 2 p.m. ET) -- Big Country singer Stuart Adamson was found dead Sunday (December 16) in a room at the Plaza Hotel in Honolulu, Hawaii, police in Nashville told LAUNCH. According to band manager Ian Grant, Adamson, 43, had been missing since November.

Adamson's last known communication was to his 7-year-old son, Calum, on November 7, which read "back by noon Sunday." He was seen in Atlanta on November 15, but did not return to his Nashville home. Police were called in to investigate the matter after Adamson's estranged wife, Melanie Shelley, filed a missing person's report November 26 after those close to the singer failed to track him down.

On the band's website Grant wrote: "I cannot believe I am sitting at my desk typing this. Stuart Adamson was found dead in a hotel room in Hawaii." He noted that not much else was known yet about the circumstances surrounding Adamson's death.

"My heart goes out to his family, [guitarist] Bruce [Watson], [drummer] Mark [Brzezicki], and [bassist] Tony [Butler]," wrote Grant.

Adamson was born in Manchester, England, and raised in Scotland. His musical career began with the punk outfit the Skids in the 1970s, before he formed Big Country with Watson and others. Big Country's lineup eventually solidified with Brzezicki and Butler.

Big Country was more successful in Europe than in the U.S., but made an impact in America in 1983 with the top 20 single "In A Big Country" from the album The Crossing.

Big Country broke up last year, and Adamson formed a new group, the Raphaels, with Nashville songwriter Marcus Hummon. The Raphaels released one album, the Celtic-tinged Supernatural, earlier this year.

Wow! I always think of this band at Christmas as their greetings are included on "Feed The World" and the extended version of "Do They Know It's Christmas?" which I play at this time of year. Wonder what they're going to find happened. Just broke up last year? That's news, too!

One of the bands in the early 80's that had a career because of MTV and their one video. Sorry to hear about his death.

NEWS - Big Country's Adamson Was Found Hanged
    12/18/2001

(12/18/01, 3 p.m. ET) -- The death of former Big Country frontman Stuart Adamson was a suicide, U.S. authorities told Reuters. Adamson was found hanged in a Honolulu hotel room Sunday (December 16) by a maid, a rope around his neck and tied to a pole in the closet.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner confirmed Monday (December 17) that the 43-year-old Scottish singer/guitarist died of asphyxiation. Toxicology tests to determine possible drug use are currently being implemented.

According to his manager Ian Grant, Adamson had been missing from his Nashville home since November. His last known communication was to his 7-year-old son, Calum, on November 7, which read "back by noon Sunday" (LAUNCH, 12/17).

Adamson and Big Country sold more than 10 million records in the 1980s. The group is perhaps best known for the rock hits "In A Big Country" and "Fields Of Fire," both from its 1983 debut album, The Crossing.

I want to throttle someone when another rock singer kills himself and leaves his family behind!!!

How can someone be so bereft of PERSPECTIVE that they'd leave their family and friends like that? How's his boy going to cope with the fact that his dad said he'd be back, lied, and went off and killed himself?

When did selling 10 MILLION RECORDS STOP BEING ENOUGH OF A DEFINITION OF SUCCESS?????????

NEWS - U2 Guitarist Saddened By Death Of Big Country Frontman
    12/20/2001

(12/20/01, 6 p.m. ET) -- The Edge is saddened by the death of former Big Country frontman Stuart Adamson. The singer-guitarist writes on U2's website (u2.com), "He was a great inspiration to me when U2 were starting out. His first band the Skids made such a big noise and with songs like 'Into The Valley' and 'The Saints Are Coming' made most of the other music of the time seem mundane and insignificant...Stuart made some great music during his career and his character came through everything he did. He had a heart as big as a mountain and he was a real romantic soul. He will be missed by all who loved his music and even more by those lucky enough to know him personally."

Adamson, who was missing for more than a month, was found hanged in a room at the Plaza Hotel in Honolulu on Sunday (December 16), and local authorities have ruled his death a suicide. His last known communication was to his 7-year-old son Calum on November 7, which said, "Back by noon Sunday."

wow, another tragedy, I feel for his son, family, and friends.....I only new that one song by them, "In a Big Country", but it always gave me a very uneasy feeling when I heard it(but not totally in a bad way either), like it always hit home, or hit me where it counts...The song always dispalyed a feeling of longing, distance, and misplacement, a broken heart perhaps....how sad........

those lyrics FORD are pretty damn heavy...

I really like that song too!

I will never understand why rock singers commit suicide. They have the best job in the world they play music for a living, plus they're rich, famous, and they get lots of chicks.

I saw Big Country's greatest hits in a music store recently that came out in those cool twentieth century remasters, I might pick that up.

I'm from the UK and Big Country were one of my favourite bands in the 80's, yhey probably were the biggest band in the country between 83-84.

Stuart Adamson was the main guitarist as well as the singer, they were a superb live act and i saw them only once during the early 90,s at Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

Try getting hold of the albums The Crossing and Steeltown to find out how good the band was.
