Joe Strummer Of The Clash Dead at 50

Officers on the scene believed Strummer died from heart failure.

    by Joe D'Angelo

Joe Strummer, vocalist and guitarist of the pioneering punk band the Clash, was found dead in his home in southwest England Sunday, according to a police spokesperson. The cause of death is unknown, though authorities do not believe the circumstances to be suspicious. Strummer was 50.

Strummer's body was discovered Sunday afternoon in their Somerset home by his wife Lucy, who phoned police. They arrived at approximately 4:45 p.m., and pronounced him dead at the scene. Officers believed Strummer died from heart failure.

The Clash are scheduled to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 10 in New York, and there had been hopes of a reunion tour.

We'll have more on Joe Strummer's passing throughout the day.

Diamond Dave said one of his infamous quotes during the 83' US Festival about the Clash. Although this is not the time and place for the mention, I would like to say, my condolences go out to Mr Stummer and his family.

One of punk's biggest bands indeed. R.I.P Joe

I was never a Clash fans by any means, but it is a bummer. This would've been a hot tour to see, had they reunited like the article alleged.

And, as sad as it is to see any musician go, at least it was by natural causes, and not because they were strung out on some shitty as drug.

    RIP, Joe.

I guess if they are going to force those kids to pray in schools they might as well have a nice prayer like this: Our Father who art in heaven, and to the republic for which it stands, thy kingdom come, one nation indivisible as in heaven, give us this day as we forgive those who so proudly we hail. Crown thy good into temptation but deliver us from the twilight's last gleaming. Amen and Awomen. ."

    RIP joe...

Somewhere in the BBC story, the lady said, "Strummer died just as there was talk of a reunion"

How much does it suck that someday (probably sooner than later) we're going to hear that "(insert VH member)died just as there was talk of a reunion, having settled all there old differences" What a bunch of dumb fucks to waste their time arguing and suing each other, wasting their talent and denying the world their music.

Yeah, that sucks. Joe and the Clash were cool. Another band we'll never see again now (at least not in their intended form)...

"The Clash is the band U2 wishes it could be."
    -Henry Rollins

Well said. I love the Clash and was actually jamming to London Calling just a couple days ago! Singing along to all the tunes. Clampdown is probably my fave and reminds me to never just "grow up and calm down". Fuck that.. What a shame he couldnt be there for the Hall of Fame induction in March but at least he died knowing his band had gotten in. The Clash is another band that proves career longevity, while nice, has absolutely no bearing on your greatness or your impact as a band. They where only around making albums for like 6 or 7 years... But look what they did. Someone should remind fucking Aerosmith of that. The Beatles, Cream & Hendrix are other artists who were only around a relatively short time but made a lasting impact.

R.I.P. Joe. Truly sad news indeed. The Clash were one of the best. My favorite Clash song is probably "Hate And War" off the first album (which is my favorite Clash album as well---that and London Calling)

I love this song, but have never been able to figure it out.
