in an interview with DLR, I remember him saying...

"Got me a date with a supermodel" - the van halen brothers...

"I know i know, i'm thinking f*ck it" - why should I bother with it

"dinner at a hotel, champaign bottle" - they wine and dine him

"a feather in a bucket" - he once saw this come to supermodels that ordered food and thought it was cool

"how many times, does somebody lie - till patience runs it's course..."

basically, how many times are they gonna lie about the whole lead singer b.s.

"i don't need that much to remember, that's how it is when you tell the truth"

he'll keep telling the truth - not worrying about what others pertaining to the band think.

"...cause you can't get this stuff no more"

there is one and only DLR - the VH brothers can't replace him.

****

he said he wrote it with those lyrics because he could tell the whole '96 reunion would have problems... pretty prophetic if you ask me

I did all this from memory, so feel free to correct me -

I think this is one of his best songs IMHO

maybe it was a self-fulfilling prophecy? if the vh bros knew what they meant i can't imagine they'd have been too happy with dave

TrapZZ pretty much nailed it, except for elaborating on the "feather in a bucket" part. Supermodels, stereotypically will eat a good meal so they can taste the food, and then puke it up afterwards. Not to be too graphic but... The feather is for tickling the back of your throat, after which the bucket becomes self explanatory.

The correlation here is that Eddie & Alex, the supermodel, would "eat" their most substantial musical "meal" in a decade and then "puke it up" soon after, pretending that it never happenned as they moved on to their next "crash diet" (which turned out to be the case with VDIII)

Of course, VDIII made the rest of us puke

The funniest thing about the lyrical metaphors....

Eddie didn't have a fucking clue !!

Hmmm...reminds me of the old Saturday Night Live bit where everyone was all Greek & stuff and they all hung out at the "vomitorium" or something like that.

I like the lyrical explanation though, TrapZZ!

And to top it off...in Me Wise Magic Dave goes on to say...

"A little Zen
headed your way
You'll get it
halfway down the interstate
Four days from now
It all goes clear
A Buddhist riff
for your inner ear"

I take these lyrics as mocking Eddie a bit; Ed was into new age mystical shit at the time and Dave is basically saying "maybe someday you'll figure out what I'm saying"!

I remember Ed saying something like, "Well Dave doesn't say what you get and why you can't get it, but fuck it, we wrote the melody...." from a Guitar Mag Interview in '97.

I always took it to mean that Dave was basically telling the bros VH that if he was out, that was it, no more Dave (Can't get this stuff no more). Of course, as time would ultimately prove, Dave will always jump at the chance to be in Van Halen, since it just means trading his tribute band in for the real thing

I always got the feeling the lyrics to MWM were Dave saying "Hey everybody, I'M BACK!!!". Where as CGTSNM was Dave saying, "Oh shit, maybe not!"
Anyway you slice it, these two songs were the the BEST Van Halen songs I'd heard since 1984. Ah, what could have been...
