Sounds like "Behind Blue Eyes" by The Who.

It is, it's "Behind Blue Eyes" by The Who. It's off of the album "Who's Next" (A GREAT album straight through, by the way!)

Came out I think in 1971. Or maybe 1970....

i downloaded the song. the lyrics are really good.

i think i might pick up this album

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

No one knows what it's like
To be hated
To be fated
To telling only lies

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

No one knows what it's like
To feel these feelings
Like I do
And I blame you

No one bites back as hard
On their anger
None of my pain and woe
Can show through

But my dreams
They aren't as empty
As my conscience seems to be

I have hours, only lonely
My love is vengeance
That's never free

When my fist clenches, crack it open
Before I use it and lose my cool
When I smile, tell me some bad news
Before I laugh and act like a fool

If I swallow anything evil
Put your finger down my throat
If I shiver, please give me a blanket
Keep me warm, let me wear your coat

No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man
Behind blue eyes

Yes!!! the Who Rocks!
Quadrophenia and Who's next are my favourites.
hey MS, I wish I was young again. I remember when I was rediscovering 'old-fart' bands when I was 14, and going to all the second hand record shops, looking around for hours and collecting all their old vinyl stuff. there was so much to catch-up for me. very exciting!!

It is an EXCELLENT album Mean_Street. You should definitely do yourself justice and do the old fashinoned thing: Go to a record store and pick up the album. Who's Next is a straight through excellent album!!

I like the comment about the answer being in the question. LOL

This album is one of the best ever made in my opinion. It captures the Who at their best. Tommy and Quadrophinia were great also. I recommend "Who's Next" to anyone.

Who's Next is a perfect rock album. I'm sure many of you know it was supposed to be a double album entitled "Lifehouse". Ther's actually a re-issue which contains much of the material Who's Next was supposed to include. Songs like "The Relay", "Join Together", "Pure and Easy", "Water", "I Don't Know Myself" are just a few. Get your hands on that copy and you will be doubly satisfied. I'm going to see The Who at the Hollywood Bowl on July first. I can't wait.
