    Hey...
I know Dream Theater and John Petrucci have been brought up before, but I think they're worth it to be brought up again. Who out there in VHlinks land are Dream Theater fans?

Every member is extremely talented. Petrucci is an outright ridiculus guitarist.

When Images and Words came out, I was amazed. I listened to that record about a million times, and learned how to play a lot of it. After a while, though, it got old--I felt the songs were too long, unfocused, and had WAY too much soloing. At first, it was impressive, and it got me used to odd-time signatures. However, I couldn't take it anymore. I still like about 3 songs on there, but that's the end of it. I didn't like Awake at all, and I haven't bought any of it since. Prog-rock just isn't my bag, I guess.

With that said, I think they (collectively) have the best CHOPS of any rock band, but I think their writing needs help, and I really don't like hearing chromatic scales and altered substituted arpeggios flying by at 137 mph. But, if you want to give credit where it is due, how the hell did Jamie ever find room to sing, let alone make sense doing it? Now THAT guy impresses me!

Homeunit, you should check out their latest effort titled Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From a Memory. It is a concept album. Very good songwriting on this album. Probably their best to date. With this album they put alot of the "shredding" aside and concentrated more on form(like the needed to get better at song structuring anyway). Any way, go pick it up. It is very good. I kinda got a Pink Floyd meets Zappa vibe with some of it. Very good conceptual story backing it to. Go check it out.

    Idiot.

Dream Theater were NEVER mainstream, get that in your head.

    Dream Theater are awesome.

    Abe Van Halen:
I suggest you give Awake another listen. It's their BEST album in my opinion. Their only 100% METAL album.

I agree with Spanish Doc. Awake is their best album.

    Homeunit,

if you like instumental stuff, go check Liquid Tension Experiment 1 and 2. All members are from Dream Theater except Tony Levin on bass guitar.

Cool to see some DT fans here.
How about if we were to rank their studio albums?

    1) Images & Words (Blew me away when I 1st heard it too)
    2) Metropolis pt.2 Scenes from a memory
    3) Awake
    4) Change of Seasons
    5) When Dream & Day Unite
    6) Falling Into Infinity

Plus these guys are killer live too. I love their little improv jams that they've done now and then.

    Hey SpanDoc ...

thanks for the compliment , I could care less dawg if they were or wanted to be a mainstream band I was refering to the fact that they had only 1 vid they had on MTV years back ... and the reason for their "none mainstreamness" is the fact that the singer sucked eggs ... the music was cool but they woulda done better with someone else and you know they were trying to sell records.

Dream theater singer sucked eggs? I think not. I feel Jame Labrie is one of the most talented singers in rock, and the only reason he does not get recognition is because they are not mainstream like Spanish Doc stated. They never will be mainstream either, and is this because they suck? NO. It is because the average listener can not relate to complexities in music. I would think it is safe to say that 80% of Dream Theater's fan base are musicians themselves who realize the difficulty and time they put forth to create their style of music. If you look at every member of that band, they are all pretty much virtuosos at ther respective instruments. I tell you this, and not to say that they are bad, but a big reason why people drool over Eddie, Vai, Clapton, or whomever is probably becaus ethey have never heard of someone like John Petrucci, Steve Morse, Al Dimeola, etc. People drool over Neal Peart because Rush was more mainstream, now how many times have those people listened to Mike Portnoy, or Terry Bozzio. The point I am making is the average listener has this perception that if a band isn't selling records, it is because the band, or specific members of the band suck. I am go and say that dream Theater in my opinion is one of, if not the most talented band on the market these days. Hell, VH 3 only sold 500,000 copies. Does that mean VH suck, or Eddie sucks. No, it just means that it wasn't something the average listener could relate to

Well I'll stop this before this gets's out of hand ...

I've only seen that video once or twice way back when and didn't have a clue making that assumption on Dream Theater. So that was my bad and probobly was influenced by DIF and his stiff drinks last night at the watering hole ...

    Oh, man...

Don't blame the bartender unless you want piss warm brews.

I had heard that Dream Theater was good so I went onto Napster and gave them a shot.

But I just COULDN'T find a song to dig.

I know I tried at least 3 songs.

They're not bad at all, but they kind of hit me cold, you know?

I neither like them nor dislike them.

I will say that the snippet that I heard of their cover of "Mean Street" - while not nearly as good as the original - was a nice show of respect.

    (And damn good taste. )

Dream Theater is cool, but I prefer Symphony X. Symphony X has a darker edge to their melodies whereas Dream Theater takes a more major/uplifting approach. And before it is said, Symphony X is NOT just another cookie-cutter, neoclassical, progressive metal band. Bands like Shadow Galery and Stratavarious are ok, but they are not even in the same league as Symphony X.

I like Dream Theater, they're really damn good instrumentalists. The only thing that sucks is that their fans are bashing Eddie on their messageboard.

Down In Flames, you have to listen to a full album of them and you have to listen it more than once to get into it. Give them another try, search for the song "Space Dye Vest". It's a beautiful piece of music, very dark and slow, has a lot of feeling in it.
