The supposed news release below is copied and pasted from alt.music.van-halen . So take it with a grain of salt, a bite of lemon, and a margurita.

Los Angeles (BPI Wire) Edward Van Halen and his self-named band have been
chalking up studio time in Sunset Studios with former Techno-Pop icon Thomas
Dolby according to sources close to Mr. Dolby, who is now active in the music
software field. "The next Van Halen album will be a departure from what you are
expecting. There are some pretty wild things being burned to disc," says Brice
Vellman, a spokesperson for Nelahnav Productions. It is reported that David
Grohl (Foo Fighters), Morten Harket (80's group A-Ha), Lenny Kravitz, and Exene
(80's group "X") have appeared on tracks of the new album due to be released
after the New Year holiday. -Sandra Castle-Newman

Wow, I think we'll call you "Mr Scarry" from now on...

Can you paste the link from where you got that.

A-HA? Are we heading for Dutch-Norwegian combo?

well... I guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to completely change everything...

whatever...

i just wantted to share this but i knowe it is just rumeor and it
might be bullshit. i have heard through friends of someone claiming to
know someone that edward van halen and alex are going to be putting
out an album without michael anthony or a permenent singer and it wont
be called van halen because they want to explore differnt types of
music and it will feature ed on synthesizers plus other guest musicans
and singers including peter gabriel ,steve lukather, and thomas dolby
who will also produce. just a heads up and like i said might be
bullshit so flame away but you will be wasting your time cause i dont
give a shit.

I posted that one on USENET myself. There is a guy I talk to on IRC Chat that claims to know a lot of people in the music biz but I still don't buy it more than 20%. But he does seem to know a lot. The reference to Steve Lukather got my curiosity up because I have read interviews where they are good friends.
I guess I'll keep fishin'.

i dont think eddie is going to rename van halen, i think eddie wants the name van halen to go out on top again not this way.
i think when they do call it quits eddie will do some different stuff.
but as long as ed,al,and mike are there it will be van halen.
van halen shall return. what you think is nothing might be something after all.

well...Ed and Thomas Dolby live (or at least did) close to each other, as it says in the notes on Dolby's greatest hits disc, so they at least know each other...but the rest of that reeks of such bullshit that i don't buy it.

and Nelahnav Productions? how long did that take to come up with?

Ed has wanted to collaborate in the past, and the above-mentioned names are friends or at least close colleagues. Who knows.... maybe...just maybe...

Someone has to check the "BPI Wire" stuff to get passed the rumour stage.
That should be possible.

Sounds credible, though, because all the people mentioned are Van Halen fans.

We need more data, though.

Although I can't see Peter Gabriel being a fan of Van Halen's music himself, I do think he might be friends with Ed. I really think Ed has always wanted to be involved in the Peter Gabriel style of music instead of what he gets labeled into , which is "guitar rock". Now, its mostly Ed's own fault he gets put into this category.
Even if this rumor is bullshit, it isn't going to surprise many people if Ed and Alex are involved in a multi-singer next album. Ed's own words from the golf outing (don't quote me exactly) were something like "Oh, we have lots of singers".
Getting back to the original issue, I really feel that this is what might be best for everyone right now. Ed wanted in some way for VH3 to be an album people actually took seriously. I guess for some reason he actually thought Cherone could produce lyrics that had any sort of heavy-handed ness to them. Maybe this will finally get this sort of desire to make an album like this out of his system, so, he can make his fans happy by reuniting with one or both of his past singers.
Even though they have no record label right now, and many of us are really hard on them for having no future (almost all of the criticism is justified), we all know that if a multi-singer album were to surface, some big label would pick it up. They wouldn't exactly be fighting for the rights to an album that would sell 300,000 or less, but, I'd say Sony would probably pick it up.
I'd have to wonder if rumors are true if people like Peter Gabriel would sing on it (Again , thats just a rumor) if then there'd be any of the other rumored singers (dave grohl, billy corgan) from past rumored multi-singer albums.
To me, it'd almost seem too varied style of an album if you had something mellow sang by Peter Gabriel, then to try to make a "MTV hit" style song with Dave Grohl or somebody similar. We'd either see a REALLY big departure from Van Halen with a mostly instrumental with a few lyrical songs sang by people like Pete Gabriel etc. Possibly on this style of album, the rumor mike anthony wouldn't play on it IS true. Or, we'd see a not-so-big departure from Van Halen with guests singing on it like Dave Grohl, Billy Corgan, maybe a song with Sam, etc. Nothing surprises me anymore in the cirus de Halen, so, whatever surfaces won't be a shocker....well, maybe if the next album actually turns out to be GOOD

I while back, I heard that DLR wasn't the only singer that was in and out of 5150.

If you also recall, Ed said at that charity golf outing that "We've had lot's of singers"...
"Keep honking buddy. I'm reloading..." -The Mard

"......HEY!.............alright............." -BIG FOOT

" I know what you're thinking: "Do I want to watch Mard? We know that horses were very strong and could actually stop airplanes from flying away. The ones made out of stone called "statues" -- occasionally came to life and rode off is a colonial cliche. How many more times do we need to hear about how the oppressive Raj's wore villainous black capes, crafted cunning plastic masks to impersonate people, and drained all the blood from their slaves so they could keep the fluid in bottles in their dungeons? I mean, YAWN!

But if you're willing to sit through this dry sort of historical drama one more time -- or even just this dry historical review -- you will not be disappointed. In fact, some of you might just learn something they didn't teach you in school!-
