OK, I was seriously intiqued after the conversation I had with Bucky Baxter this past Sunday. (please read previous post "Info from Munich", if you need to get up to speed) I spoke to Bucky again about 30 minutes ago. He is in Milan following the last European Ryan Adams date and is preparing to fly to Los Angeles tomorrow with the rest of the band.

I wanted to thank Bucky for the good interview and excellent info he gave me for another topic (not VH related) and also wanted to see if I could squeeze any additional info based on what he said about EVH & Steve Miller on Sunday.

Bucky told me that he last spoke with Steve Miller just after Christmas and that Miller told him that the recording work with Edward Van Halen had been started in early November (two separate sessions that took place at 5150 followed by an additional 3 sessions that took place at Cherokee Studios in Los Angeles).

I asked if Bucky knew any other info on the tone or vibe or if Steve Miller mentioned any other people that were around during those sessions.

"Yeah, he said Rick Rubin was there and that their bass player, Anthony, was also there for part of the time, just hanging out though and not putting anything to tape".

I don't know if I have uncovered the holy grail here or what, but I think this is true information based on someone I trust would not be 'smoking my pipe', so to speak. Why would this guy have any reason to make this stuff up?

Like I said in a different post, he is an accomplished musician with a long recording history with some serious names in the business. It all seemed so nonchalant for him also which makes me think he has no ulterior motives.

But why did he tell me this? I'm just a free lance journalist and semi-attached to the outskirts of the music business through my work. I can only guess it must have been the comfort level and rapport that we had during the interview? I really don't know but I am happy to hear this interesting stuff.

    Check out www.BuckyBaxter.com

I am going to continue to pursue this through more contacts as they come through Munich. I am sure I can ask (in a roundabout way) other people in the business soon.

Just curious dj88, if you think Van Halen is dead, why do you come here so much?

Not flaming ya, just a little curious.

I'm hoping for a resurrection of the original line-up... Just a fool I guess. I've wanted the reunion since 85. Now when it's painfully obvious to everyone except Eddie and Dave that they need each other, I come here in hopes that someone knocked some sense into both of them.

    Wishful thinking I know...

Well, if anyone wants to e-mail this guy, here's the e-mail address from his site. We might get some kind of reply.

    bucky@buckybaxter.com

Hell, I'll even link his e-mail to make it easier: bucky@buckybaxter.com

I haven't e-mailed him, but let me know if you do. I'm guessing Grant at the VHND will be all over that.

There are some more contact e-mails listed on his site.

Okay, we've got Eddie, Rick Rubin, Steve Miller and Michael Anthony (who wasn't playing). My question is...where the hell is Alex?

I'm interested to see how far this topic goes.

First of all, who the hell is Ryan Adams? Secondly, why the hell would Steve Miller be working with VH? Thirdly, I don't see Eddie recording VH material outside of 5150. Taped stuff might be mixed and engineered outside of 5150, but not recorded. Eddie's done everything since 1984 at 5150.

None of this makes sense. Besides, isn't Dave busy installing a revolving door at his place to better accomodate his band members?

The band did record vocal tracks for BALANCE in Vancouver, and I believe a few pieces of VH3 were actually recorded at Mike Post's home studio, including NEWORLD. I wouldn't completely rule out Eddie doing a bit of recording at other studios. Who knows? It does seem kinda weird, though.

the thing i don't get about this-we know Ed played bass on the one Sammy disc, and that bass playing sounds nothing like the bass playing on any VH disc, IMHO...unless someone's in the studio witnessin' Ed on four strings, and not six, i ain't buying this.

Yeah, Ed's bass was louder on Sammy's disc than anything Mikey has been allowed to do!
