View Full Version : Why do promoters book incompatible acts together?

When I saw U2 back in December of 2005, most of the fans waited in the hallways drinking beer while Kanye West was onstage. His loud, thumping rap music was not well received by the 80's rockers who were at the show (which made up the majority of the crowd).

How many times have you had to endure an opening act that was completely imcompatible with the headlining act? Why do promoters do this? Don't they realize that more people might pay for a ticket if they select a popular band from the same genre of music that the headlining act plays?

That brings up the question: Why in the hell would the promoters of the 2007 Van Halen tour select Ky-Mani Marley as the opening act? I mean, they may as well hire Boy fucking George! Marley is about as compatible with Van Halen as fire is with water! Do they think this is going to attract a diverse crowd? I doubt it. I have never even heard of Marley before now, and I doubt that he has any fans that will be coming out in droves to pay for a Van Halen concert.

Here's what Andrew wrote about this on his MelodicRock.com website today:

KY-MANI MARLEY HONORED TO BE SPECIAL GUEST ON THE 2007 VAN HALEN TOUR:

Why do promoters book musically incompatible acts as support for headliners? How frustrating for rock fans turning up to see Van Halen, having then to sit through a bloody reggae/hip hop act. How about Gotthard or Scorpions or some new upcoming rock act like Cinder Road instead? Once again the deal is put before what the fans might actually want to see...

Press Release / AAO Music, Inc., the home of Reality and its label partners, Vox Music Group and Purfek Storm Productions, are pleased to announce that Ky-Mani Marley has been selected to support Van Halen on the group's highly anticipated North American tour.

The tour will coincide with the release of Ky-Mani Marley's CD titled Radio. The CD will be his first release since his Grammy nominated album, Many More Roads, five years ago. Radio features several key singles including "One Time," "The March" and "Conversation" among others. All of the singles contain Marley's unique sound of classical reggae beats mixed with contemporary hip hop. Each song will be promoted heavily at radio, in print and other media and at retail. In addition to his exploding musical career Marley has also starred in several feature films including the cult favorite Shottas.

Son of the legendary Bob Marley, Ky-Mani continues the exodus in a different, but difficult world after 30 years. Radio by Ky-Mani Marley will be available from AAO Music, in conjunction with Vox Music Group and Purfeck Storm Productions beginning September 25th.

What do you think? Are you planning to come early enough to see Marley?

If I had the money to go see one of these shows I would most definitely go to see Marley. I listen to every type of music and Ky-mani is a great artist. I know he won't be popular but I would hope that no one here would be classless enough to boo him.

I'm not going at all, but it does seem to be an odd juxtoposition of acts. Even so, if I were going, I would check it out as I like all the flavors of our musical ice cream - I might come away liking a new band.

My suggestion is to go and give it a fair shot - you just might like it.

depending on how old you are the selection of babes might be quite limited if your not into or not old enough to appreciate soccer moms who were listening to Van Halen in high school when they were brand new, as opposed to me when I was in high school 6 years ago and the only thing Van Halen was a memory of the Van Halen III debacle and at the mention of Eddie Van Halen the most common response was, "isnt he dead"?

Its all about the money if you book Marley your gonna get Marley fans
buying VH tics so they can see there guy. Add that to the fact that
Marley was probably a pretty cheap grab.IMO

Babes? Are you talking about those women that still try to pull off the 80's look? Forgetting that they've added a few pounds. 91 is the last time I remember hot women at a halen show.

That's probably the case - big recognizable name, little money to get it.

I remember thinking the first album was pretty good so I don't mind the choice and I hope the fans don't razz em to much ... given the chance they'll probably win over some new fans.

I can understand ripping the Marley thing, but I still think ripping on Wolfie is bullshit. Kid is fucking 16. Just shows how pathetic some of the people on here are.

I can't for the life of me figure out the logic behind getting someone like this to open for the entire tour. My only guess is that Roth (who else in the band would do this?) is pulling an Axl Rose and instead of coming on at midnight when the crowd is good and pissed off to make for a "high energy" concert, simply got a band no typical Van Halen fan would ever be caught dead listening to that'll accomplish the same thing.

I expect epic amounts of trash from the loges to be thrown down at the stage and anyone within 200 feet of it during these guy's set. Maybe that's a secret perk of the ILAA premium tickets. To get pelted by garbage before the main act.

Stupdiest support band ever.

Are Van Halen afraid that a real rock band will blow them off stage?

That's the gut feeling I am having too. I mean, what if they had Nickelback, Blink 182, or some other killer new rock band open for them - and they ended up smoking their ass? That wouldn't look good at all. Let's face it, Dave has seen better days and so has Eddie. These guys are not ready to compete with a killer opening act. So I guess we'll have to endure some lame-ass reggae hip hop bullshit.

It's obvious that these guys are not concerned about what the fans want... or at least Eddie isn't. Just think what could happen with this tour if Michael Anthony was onboard and they had Nickelback as the opening act. It would be the best fucking concert tour of 2007!!! Tickets would be sold out in 24 hours.

Oh well. I guess we should give up the idea of getting what the fans want out of Van Halen and just take what we can get.

why does the fuckin opening band have to impact the main act?

don't get some of you people, but oh well

so many would bitch regardless who the opener was, so what's the difference ya know?

it's about dramatics people, this is a business ya know.

it's about selling the product and "setting the stage" for the main act. people do that shit all the time.

we won't be hearin sanford n son this time around when the opener takes the stage..LOL

I doubt it. Would you bitch if the opening act was Nickelback, Switchfoot, Blink 182, Foo Fighters, or some other newer kick-ass rock band? I wouldn't. But if you put some lame-ass hip-hop/reggae band in front of the greatest rock band of all time, you can bet that a lot of people will bitch.

I'm don't think that people bitch just to be bitching. Eddie Van Halen gives people a lot of valid reasons to bitch. However, I have never bitched about any of the albums he put out prior to 1995. It was post-1995 that EVH fans started bitching, and for good reasons. It wasn't just a bitchfest for the sake of bitching... EVH poured a lot of fuel on the fire.

Good point...
Well there wont be any chance of VH getting blown of the stage....they should have just gotten the Teletubbies to open for them...then we the fans would be REALLY FUCKING excited to see VH hit the stage!:D

The problem with your argument is that those bands you mentioned above are all headlining acts that are waaaaay beyond opening for anybody.

Correct. The opening band is probably gonna get 30 to 40 minutes top.

Still would like to see a "rock band" opening instead.

Van Halen can ill afford to have some young upstart band come in and blow them off the stage.
Marley might turn out to be a great act, which will provide a good value for your concert dollar, and VH has little chance of being embarrassed by a reggae act.
And if the warm-up turns out to be a dud, you won't give a shit cause that's not why you're there.
