View Full Version : Which song from Sam's tenure with VH would you like to see Dave Sing?
Bostonian

Okay...
This is one of those threads that will piss off people, but when Sam was fronting VH he would always play a couple of songs from Dave catalog. So fair is fair I suppose, and if they were to do this (which we know they won't) which songs would you like to see Dave attempt?
I say Summer Nights since that was a left over track before Dave bolted that was changed up with Sammy and became what it is today...

Well it would be kinda cool to hear Dave doing Get Up or Summer Nights since they were originally written when he was in fact still in the band. But I do understand what you mean when Sammy sang unchained it sounded just not right...

Pleasure Dome would be the only thing I could come up with or maybe Humans Being without the "Shine On" parts.
Dave's vocal range would change the songs so much, plus it's not something he really has to do. Sammy being the replacement singer it was expected he would do some of the earlier songs (remember when people bitched that he didn't sing enough of them?) however I don't think anyone including people who like the Sammy era would want to hear Roth do anything but the 1st 6 albums.

I think FWYS is the only reasonable answer. They would only do one that was popular much like Jump and ATBL where done to death at Hagar shows. I think a rearranged version of Poundcake could work or Summer Nights.
I'm sure there are no plans to sing any SH stuff because Dave wouldn't and it leaves the door open two or three years down the road for Ed to say the Dave was insecure and wouldn't do any Sam stuff.

Its just a 1984 tour all over again, but not as cool. :)
The only thing he COULD sing would be Finish What ya Started. His voice isn't near what Sam's is. However, he won't sing any. Those songs won't be played again by VH until the farewell tour in 2010 with Sam, Dave & Mike. (after they realize that they can't write songs anymore).

Think of it in Biblical terms: Dave is "Old Testament"; Sammy is "New Testament." It's okay for New Testament Sammy to sample from and pay homage to the original scriptures of the Old Testament, but you aint NEVER gonna find Diamond Dave takin' NOTHIN' from the New Testament. It's just not part of his tradition and never will be.

HINA
Those eyes burn holes
Into the starry night
And when her sleepy eyes
Are open wide
You can fairly dance beneath her light
And I'd love to get to know the natives
But I'm only flesh and blood
She'll share your joys
But not your sorrows
Mistress of the coming flood.
Hina
Cool upon the silent sea
Isn't she the moon queen
Hina
Whispering, In my dreams
You must come back to me
And the tides rise and a distant sigh
Falls on deaf ears
Her vision makes you every inch a king
King for a million years
And she loves you when you're leavin'
And she'll leave you if you stay
She says...
"Don't tell me that you love me
You'll hate me for hearning it
When I drift away."
Hina
I can hear you softly cry
Your storms and lullablies
Hina
I'll whisper in your dreams
Till you come back to me.
Come back
But she will never stay
Come back
And you must never wait...,
Never wait. Never wait. Never wait.

Say what you want about Cherone, I'm sure you all will, but Gary put his heart and soul into those classic tunes and did them better that tour (98)than Hagar ever did !
There were times during the Hagar tenure that I walked away just wishing they'd leave the old stuff alone, because it was sooo clear he didn't really want to do those tunes, and it showed.
I think Gary understood how much they meant to us, and did them justice.:smokin:
None.
There are too many CVH tunes that will get left unplayed as is, no need to leave more out with Sammy era songs(or Dave solo tunes).
If this actually lasts and they tour more and more, maybe you could throw in some Sam era(or Dave solo)down the road, but this time, it has to be nothing but CVH.

Its a pretty safe bet that considering the apparent hatrage Eddie has for Sammy now(that kinda sounds familiar somehow)that he would like to pretty much erase '86 - 2004(including Gary) all together even though he can't. I disagree in a sense.....I think Ed knows this tour is all about the classic tunes and he's fine with that. But I also think he's extremely proud of everything he's ever put on record musically, and would never want to "erase" any of it.......ESPECIALLY VHIII ! He was very proud of that record, which is why he was so discouraged by the feedback he got from it. He had ALWAYS made music to make himself happy first, and until 98, the fans were right there with him. But the poor record sales of that era really bummed him out, and I think it contributed to the long layoff !

The most appropriate song for this tour would be "Big Fat Money"
But no, there shouldn't be any Hagar era. Not that Dave could pull any of them off anyway. :D
Let get one thing straight.
VHIII the worst CD I have ever purchased period... I really doubt you will here Van Halen playing anything off that CD. I don't care how proud Ed might be of that record. The fans hated it... I don't know one fan that said that was a good CD. Ed wrote the music while he was on the toilet and it showed.
Dave was singing Van Halen tunes to a Blue Grass Band. He'll sing whatever Wolfie tells him to. (Referring to Ed letting a 15 year old do the set list).
Didn't 2004 Tour have some classic VH songs? I bet Eddie after going through "step 9" in Rehab will add some Sammy songs. I personally would love to see if Dave could pull off singing "Why Can't This Be Love" or "Right Now".

Maybe this tour they will ignore the 86-96 stuff, but I just can't see them having big tour over and over with 78-84 music only. Look, if Dave went along with Wolfie picking the setlist...who knows what is in it. If I go to a Van Halen show and don't hear certain songs..hagar's and roth's included I would feel letdown. You are 100% correct! Dave isn't THAT desperate.

I know that the statements from these guys in past interviews are pretty much worthless, but the Diamond One did observe that every night Sammy would have to sing his VH (DLR) songs, but he (DLR) will never, ever have to sing a Sammy Hagar song.
True dat.

Actually, I've always liked "When It's Love". Very well written song, great bluesy solo by Eddie. I'll never understand the logic that every ballad Van Halen did with Sammy was "horrible, cheesey, blah blah blah, I can only accept one version of Van Halen because I'm closed-minded yada yada yada".
Anyway, back on topic. I'll be really surprised if anything from the Sammy-era will be done. Nor do I want to hear DLR even attempt to sing Sammy songs.

I think he would be smokin' on Summer Nights.

i would have to vote for the long lost vh french language tracks; given dave's penchant for foreign language singing/speaking (see sonrisa salvaje and listen to any clip of his radio show), i think he can really pull these off:

Sammy era songs will not be played on this tour, nor do I think they ever will, unless the band re-records them with DLR on vocals...and that is a super long shot.

Sammy stuff won't be played on this tour. I doubt the OP really expects that.
Poundcake ,Hot Summer Nights, Humans Being would be cool to name a few.
Since we are talking about things that won't happen. I think it would be interesting to hear what Dave would have come up with over the years on a lot of the cool riff's Ed created/ tunes VH created during the Sammy and Gary eras. Didn't Dave already have ideas for songs on 5150 like Hot Summer Nights before he was out? Love, like, or hate Sammy era there was some good music made and Ed came up with some tasty stuff.
I'm not sure I'd like to hear Dave sing Sammy era as much as I'd like to see them now blaze a trail with a new era. My ultimate hope is that they do well and down the road Wolfie moves on to do something on his own as an adult lol and Mike comes back. Ed makes it right with Mike and they ride off into the California sunset kicking ass as the Mighty Van Halen. lol:)

Or maybe consider all those ballads actually suck. I like keys and synths
if they are good. I hate cheese rock. Which is odd, because I totally love
both cheese and rock. But putting them together is like putting Slim Jims
in your vodka.

Like Dreams... It's a pretty song but ....Some kind of alien reaches in and pulls a string love comes walking in....that is the worst IMO. Or maybe second to the Inside song. and I walk like someone else..hey! *cowers* Some Hagar VH tunes touch on greatness but the meat of it and the comercial stuff like right now and dreams is just so ugh. Like Mikey's voice is awesome on on fire, Light up the Sky and all that, incredible actually, but on stuff like Right now, and even the chorus the Human's Being..the Shine on part...its just so soft and girly. Not in a good way either. That always bugged me. A lot of potential in those tunes.

i'm not going anywhere... thanks...
it's called a joke/parody...
i actually came across these in a thread on these boards several months back... i own all van hagar cd's and his solo/montrose stuff, so i'm not simply a rothtard bagging on sammy... relax... these guys, "all alumni" as dave would say, are all fair game to poke fun at... so get off your high horse... thanks :p

That's just your dweeb opinion, and you're entitled to it I guess. But that doesn't make it true.

Well, it's not true to say others can only accept the hard stuff from VH just
b/c they don't like the schmaltz. I loved stuff like One Foot Out the Door and
I'll Wait. But face it, those Sam ballads are corny and trite and as cringe-
inducing as anything by Foreigner or Journey. But wait, let me guess...
Sure it's subjective. A matter of taste. Or lack thereof.
F*** Van Hagar music!:brickwall

as far as ballads go, i wish they'd play "hear about it later" and "in a simple rhyme" but i don't see those on any lists as being rehearsed...
look, the sammy era was great in its own respect, but in fairness it has no resemblance to the dave era whatsoever, and this tour is really about revisiting the dave years...
i would imagine that the entire catalogue could get revisited live again somewhere down the road, but they're going to try and see how far a restart with dave can go first... if the vip packages have proved anything, money talks for the vh camp, so if it's sold to them that a sam and dave tour full on would mean huge business, it will happen, but right now it's all about the first 6 albums (and maybe the 2 songs from '96)...
