I noticed that on a VH "How to play in the style"that EVH was holding a fender strat type guitar with a bunch of multicolored switches,I was wondering what songs,if any,he used it on and if he still does.
Not 100% sure which guitar you're talking about, but it may be the Ripley stereo guitar that Eddie used to record the intro of Top Jimmy. The Ripley guitar allowed each string to sent to a different side of the speaker.
Huntjosh, is the guitar Eddie has on here the one you're talking about. www.the-inside.com/vhinside/book4.html (http://www.the-inside.com/vhinside/book4.html)
if so, I think that is a Ripley. Hopefully someone else knows for sure.http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

The guitar in that picture is not a Ripely, it's a fender, (jazman),(I'm sure Brown knows the model for sure). The ripley looks a normal guitar except it has a bunch of pots on it for panning!

Homeunit, thanks for correcting me. When I went to college I had that very picture (out of a magazine) on the inside of my locker. I could have sworn they said that guitar was a Ripley, but obviously I'm wrong. There is a picture of a Ripley in the 9th issue of the INSIDE mag. The body is very similar to a Telecaster. Peace.http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif

That's not a Fender, it's a Sears and Roebuck Silvertone.

What the heck are the multi-colored switches on the left side of that guitar then?? Aren't those to pan the strings to different tracks??

Yes Brett, that's exactly what those are. A Ripley looks just like any other Kramer except it had 6 pots on it for each string. I think this guitar basically just splits the bass strings and the G,B,and E strings, instead of doing them individually like a Ripley could do. So with this guitar you could have the E,A,D and the G,B,E on different sides, but that's as far as it could go. Look at the pic real close, and you can see the pickups are split kind of like a P Bass. I think there are 5 individual coils on this guitar.

Ed's original Ripley was a Telecaster shape. The one that's a regular Kramer shape is the red bowling ball that is on the cover of Guitar World July '86.
actually i have a pic of ed with a black kramer/ripley with just one pickup...also that guitar your talking about in that posted pic is a Airliner guitar im pretty sure but could be wrong...

Yeah Glenn, that's the one. Someone said he used it on Top Jimmy, is that the only song you know of?Also, is that thing custom made?
Huntjosh, now I'm not sure which guitar is which here. From Brownsound's reply, I don't think this guitar is the Ripley, although it does have some of the same capabilities as the Ripley.
As for the Ripley itself, in the guitar issue of the INSIDE (#9) there is a picture of Ed's Ripley and states that he used it to record a song called "Ripley" during the 1984 sessions that was never used. Another nugget in the VH vaults that hopefully we'll one day hear.http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif
