View Full Version : Underrated Guitarists

Six String Slinger

Here is a list of guitar players that I always thought were good, but were probably overlooked because of the bands they were with . For some, I really dug the rhythm playing. And for others, just thier unique approach or their tone. But all of them made me want to play guitar. You may laugh at some, but remember the subject. I'm very interested in your opinions on my choices and the one's you come up with.
1. Elliott Easton(Cars)
2. Neil Geraldo(Pat Benatar)
3. Neal Schon(Journey)
4. Billy Gibbons(ZZtop)
5. Steve Stevens(Billy Idol)
6. Richie Sambora(Bon Jovi)
7. Prince
8. Keith Scott(Bryan Adams)
9. Paul Dean(Loverboy)
10. Lindsey Buckingham(Fleetwood Mac)
Sorry it's a bit retro, but I was a child of the eighties.

On the main discussion page, where everyone was asked to rate guitarists, many of the ones you mentioned made my list, specifically:

Lindsey Buckingham, Richie Sambora, Paul Dean, and Neal Schon. I thought of Prince, but some people just don't like him.

Good choices overall.

I would add the guitarist who played for Jim Croce (sorry, I don't know his name), the Edge (U2), Vito Bratta (White Lion) and Andy Summers (The Police).

As a guitar player, I can appreciate all styles of guitar playing. The guitar player for Jim Croce was an interesting and very cool coice. Jim Croce was an excellent player in his own right. I always thought that Vito Bratta's solo for "Wait" was brilliant, but I'm afraid I don't know his other work because the lead singer for that band turned me off, so I've probably don't know half of what he can do. As for Collective Soul,I love the three-guitar attack that they have.Triple threat.

cool responses, definately agree with Joe Walsh and Keith Scott. Richie Sambora is also WAY underrated.

Here's a guy that no one ever mentions. Mick Ronson of David Bowie fame. Not fast or flashy but the backbone of early Bowie and a great player. As far as blues players go, the most underrated is Albert King. He was a HUGE influence on Stevie Ray Vaughn and blues in general but gets overlooked.

I am also quite confident in my proficiency.
I also told Michael Harris ( an underrated shredder ) once that "On any given night any player who is "in the zone" can be considered the greatest player at that moment", so that includes you, me, Brett, Hain, Eddie Italy and any other neck wrangler out there pouring mind, body, and soul into the tones.

Frank Gambale.
He comes from Australia and used to play in Chick Corea Elektric Band. He made a record with Steve Smith and Stu Hamm (Satriani) a couple of years ago and they've just finished their second album. Music style is fusion jazz/rock. You should check the album.

It's not about being egotistical really, it's just interesting how many guys don't really value, or take pride in their playing. I guess there are guys who are extrinsicly motivated and do what they have to, and there are intrinsically motivated guys who just love to play. IMO to be any good you have to be of the latter bunchhttp://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

Musicians by nature tend to be a little eccentric. And guitarists are blessed with the instrument IMO that most closely resembles the human voice. It takes confidence to do anything, but as Homeu alluded to earlier, if it gets out of hand, the playing is affected and the audience can feel it.
A couple other underraters I missed in my earlier post:

Adrian Belew and Robert Fripp on King Crimson's Discipline CD. Totally psycho bombastic playing and lyrics. Check it out!

Heres my list:

Richie Sambora - Great guitarist who has escaped recognition for some insane reason

Ritchie Blackmore - A legend who the media has continued to overlook. They recognise the talents of his contemproraries like Page and Iommi but ignore him. A real shame.

Vivian Campbell - his guitar work on the Def Leppard albums, as well as other projects is great!

Brian May - Some of riffs have been really groundbreaking and he has had quite an infuence on many guitarists. Yet again he escapes recognition.

I'm sure there are quite a few more. Just cant think of any.

Eddie's definetly NOT on this list. He's damn good and everyone knows it http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif

Nice choices VH3! I've always thought that Warren Cucurillo was a very inventive player. He sure knows how to abuse his effects, doesn't he? I've always liked Andy Taylor's funky, chunky rhythm playing too. I discovered Ernie Isley in my early twenties and have been a fan since. Do you have the new Isley Brothers box set? As for Al Di Meola. I don't think the general public really knows a lot about him because he makes instrumental music , but I think among Guitar players, he is a god. So I can't really say he is underrated. Anyone, guitar player or not, should pick up "Elegant Gypsy" and the live albums "Tour De Fource" and "Friday Night in San Francisco"(Recorded in 1981), featuring the trio of Di Meola/ John Mclaughlin and Paco De Lucia.
