Well wolfman,
I mix a combonation of VH(dlr) and Seattle
Grunge and made my own style "Van Grunge".

I have enough material for about 2 alblums

Now that I'm 25 it's hard to let go of a
dream that I would be a musician. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/cry.gifhttp://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gifhttp://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

Cool, guys. As for myself, I've done a little of everything, but I've always managed to sneak some VH into the setlist in every band I've been in. My wife and I had an 8-piece together for 6 years. She sang lead with two chicks doing back up, I played lead and we also had Bass, Drums, Keys, and a second Guitar player. We did a lot of female stuff like Sass Jordan, Lone Justice, even some old Motown. In the middle of all this, I'm doing Eruption and Cathedral. http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif We had a pretty decent following for a few years and were runners up (in a field of around 70) in a local radio station's battle of the bands. Right now ( no pun intended) I'm plotting my next move.

The last band I was in we played anything from Alice In Chains, Janes Addiction, Nirvana to some VH and alot of originals. One problem I have is that I find it hard sometimes to sing back-up and play guitar. Anyone have similar problems??

Wolfman
09.03.00, 08:25 PM
Depending on the material, singing back-up and playing at the same time can be like drinking coffee with a fork sometimes. I don't know how Ed does some of the stuff he does when he joins Mikey for backups.

My band (Peroxide - coincidence, huh?) play mainly originals with the odd cover. Crue's Kickstart My Heart, Kiss Rock and Roll all Nite, and we're currently working on doin' Ain't Talking 'Bout Love. Because of that dance tune that came out a few years ago with the sample, we figure that the indie rock kids around here will recognise the riff, and hopefully they'll want to know more... I'd love to do "Jamie's Cryin'" but my guitarist has refused to play ANY Eddie Van Halen or Steve Vai. It's a miracle he agreed to ATBL..! http://208.50.7.95/vhlforum/smilies/wink.gif

In my band we play both but a lot of originals. But when you are live you have to do some covers because not everyone knows your songs. If we had to we could be a Van Halen tribute band. We play our stuff and I play guitar and also do my Jimi Hendrix tribute at night.I play Voodoo Child,All Along The Watchtower, and one or two more Jimi's. That is when I play with my teeth, behind my back and become Jimi. You know what I mean. Oh shit! They are doing a thing about the 5150 record on radio!Anyway we play Unchained into Without You we do Fire In The Hole Romeo Delite!! Hot For Teacher and Mean Street.

My band is 90% originals and the rest obscure covers. Ever heard of the Meters? Galactic? Professor Longhair?

We've got one tune so far at www.mp3.com/Gris-Gris (http://www.mp3.com/Gris-Gris)

Gris-Gris (pronounced gree-gree) is some voodoo shit, so we stick to a New Orleans funk niche.

Okay, so I been outta the band scene for about five years now. Coincidentally, I been married for about five years now. Now back in the day, we did anything we could get our hands on. While in my junior year of college, the married student housing apartments burned down. We played a benefit fundraiser to raise money for them for free. We played all night. 6:00 P.M. till 6:00 A.M. Now we avoided the obvious falling asleep stuff on stage by doing different sets. Like the first set was the rhtym guitarist and myself doing a five song Neil Young cover set. Hey Hey My My, Like A Hurricane, Cinnamon Girl, Fuckin' Up, and Rockin' In The Free World. We switched on lead vocals and both harmonized with each other, the rhythm guitarist even played the solo for Like A Hurricane.
Then he and the bassist did a set of Kansas covers. Then The Bassist and The Drummer played a set of Pearl Jam. Myself and the bassist played a set of Zeppelin covers. Then the whole band got on stage together. We hung up the acoustics and broke out the electrics. We opened with Purple Haze, then an original, then Enter Sandman, then an original, ATBL, then original, Movin' On by Bad Company, then original, then we closed that set with Runnin' With The Devil.
We took a small break for smokes and snuff and beer. When we came back it was me and the rhythm player by ourselves from 10:00P.M. till 2:00 A.M. and it was a set of all acoustic originals that he and I had written previous to joining this band. We had a blast doing these, because roughly half hadn't been performed in two years, and the other half had never been performed. While he and I were performoing the other band members sleptin a dressing room. When we got done, they did their various sets while we went and got some sleep from about 2:30-4:30 in a dressing room. When we came back, the place was still full, and the whole band got onstage together and played. At this point we had run out of original stuff to play, so we were asking for audience requests. Some guys in the frat would yell out something, and we'd be like, uh don't know that, what are the chords we'll fake it! That's funnier than shit guys when you get up there and play something you've never rehearsed, in front of a live audience.

The blues stuff loony that I would play in the day would be Texas Flood, Have You Ever Loved A Woman, Before You Accuse Me, Call It Stormy Monday, Red House, Crossroads, Love Struck Baby, Life By The Drop, Pride And Joy, Let Me Love You, Crossroad Blues, and sometimes we would do Jessica by The Allman Bros. and sometimes we would do a little Cinderella. Now Keifer isn't exactly Collins or King I know, but we would do Gypsy Road, Shake Me, Coming Apart At The Seams, and Coming Home, which really got a good blues base. Would you call Voodoo Chile, and White Room blues? I wouldn't, but know people who do so-whatever, I been known to play them too.

BBB is coming together nicely in rehearsal at the moment (No clarinet, but our other singer does a mean trumpet impersonation a la 'Bring back leroy brown' by Queen on it instead. The next gig is on the 25th of October, but it'll probably be held over 'till the 15th of November (probably a more receptive crowd at that one). I'll let you know.
Hey, they were auditioning members for a girl group in the rehearsal studio next door to us last monday! So we dragged all the auditionees into our room and played 'em a song until their manager came and took them back! Tee Hee! They had their fingers over their ears the whole time! Apparently they can hear us through the soundproofed wall while they're trying to rehearse!

It's been a while guys...

In the early eighties, I was in a cover band from Ventura, CA (about 60 miles north of LA), and we played the usual hard-rock fare (Zep, Priest, Maiden, Sabbath, Ozzy, Rush, Travers, etc.), along with quasi-punk/new wave (The Clash, The Police, Sex Pistols, Devo, etc.) and of course, Van Halen!

I played bass and sang lead on the higher register stuff like Ozzy, Rush and Zeppelin, while the guitarist did most of the other. He handled himself well on the VH tunes, no easy feat, and the most difficult thing, believe it or not, was the singing! Anyway, at one time or another, we played the following:

Unchained
Take Your Whiskey Home
Somebody Get Me A Doctor
Runnin' With The Devil (I played the intro on bass with my teeth - frickin' hilarious)
Ain't Talking 'bout Love

Anyway, it's years later, I play guitar now in addition to bass, and I'm putting together some covers to go out and perform with a sequencer (sick of dealing with other musicians). I plan on doing some VH, if I can hack it, and here's what I have in mind:

Hang 'em High
Pretty Woman (VH version, of course)
Romeo Delight
Light Up The Sky
D.O.A.
