Can we be less vague and more spacific.

Best Rock Drummer?
Best All around drummer?
Best Jazz/Funk/Latin Drummer?
Most influential Drummer?

Most of my list I wonder if you've even heard of them?

Best Rock Drummer: John Bonham
Best All Around Drummer: Simon Phillips
Best Jazz: Jeff "Tain" Watts
Best Funk: Dennis Chambers
Best Latin: Vinnie Calutta
Most Influential: Buddy Rich/John Bonham/Animal

And again, "best" is more subjective than "favorite"

Like it says "Top 5", ... our "opinions" would be more of the term I was looking for mot best or favorite.http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

What is a parradiddle? I know it must be a drum term. Is it like a triple roll or something like that?http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/cool.gif

Thanks Timmy for the pick up.

And by my differentiating 'best' from 'favorite' I mean, for example, Neil Peart is/was one of the best, but never one of my favs. It's all about who reaches that groove inside ya.

Hey Paradiddle and TT, ... What do you think of Lars Ulrich(before the whole napster thang) and why wasn't he on your list?

Maybe I should put it at "Top 10" cause he didn't make my list either.http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/eek.gif

Was he the innovator of the "off beat" crashes?

Also maybe give your opinion on Matt Cameron cause I saw Pearl Jam a couple of weeks ago and he himself is one "off beat" crashin' mo'fo! http://www.vhforums.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

Lars just doesn't have any "feel" or groove to his playing. Plus his hands suck. Great feet though.

I agree with TT, Lars has good feet, but lacks something in the soul department. Besides, as far as metal drummers go, there's a long line of others I'd think of before I got to Lars. Maybe the Napster thing has a little to do with it, but mostly it is his lack of groove.

My first pick for best metal feet is the guy for Slayer. Holy shit!

My top 5 in order are:

Alex Van Halen
Neil Peart
John Bonham
Ian Paice
Tommy Lee

I didn't see Paice mentioned before, he's always been a favorite of mine. And on a personal note, I think that Neil Peart is more talented than AVH by a hair. If you disagree, watch the drum solo on the Rush DVD that came out last year. Pure brilliance. This being said, AVH remains my favorite because I like his style better and he's in a better band:D

All of the guys you folks have mentioned are great however, you definitely need to check out Rod Morgenstein and his work the Dixie Dregs if you haven't already. If you only remember him from Winger you really didn't get a glimpse of what the guy can do.

While you're at it, I know as drummers you all know how important bass players are, check out Dave Larue on bass. Aww fuck, check out the whole band.

These are my favorites, most inspirational and listened to

1) Neil Peart (no explanation necessary)
2) Alex Van Halen (most underrated drummer, gets overshadowed by his little brother) makes the hard stuff seem easy, master of the up tempo rock shuffle. Big Al simply kicks ASS.
3) Nicko McBrain (MAIDEN! up the irons!)
4) Tommy Aldridge
5) Simon Phillips:headbang:

Terry Bozzio
Virgil Donati
Mike Mangini
Rick Allen (LOVE how he never gave up after his accident and rocks the electronic kit)

Good call! How could I forget Vinny Appice? He was SO great on all the Dio stuff!

Tough to list just 5. Just thought of 3 more-

Eric Singer from Kiss/Alice Cooper is really really good too.
Stewart Copeland
Tim Alexander from Primus

there are SO many great drummers out there.
