View Full Version : Story on Eruption from THE MAN

I thought this was pretty interesting, and SO ironic yet typical of the master.

From Ed's interview in the April '96 issue of Guitar World:
"The whole story behind "Eruption" is unusual. It wasn't even supposed to be on the album. I showed up at the recording studio early one day and started to warm up because I had a gig on the weekend and I wanted to practice my solo guitar spot. Our producer, Ted Templeman, happened to walk by and he asked, "What's that? Let's put it on the tape!" So I took one pass at it, and they put it on the record. I didn't even play it right. There's a mistake at the top end of it. To this day, whenever I hear it I always think, "Man, I could've played it better.""

(Only Eddie would think that he could have played ERUPTION, of all things, better! I love that story. I also can't help but think every time I read that story, "Damn, what if Ted HADN'T just "walked by" when Ed was practicing?" http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif)

Good call on Ed. I heard him say once that he'd recently heard Where Have All the Good Times Gone on the radio, and he felt he totally missed some harmonics. Then he said it didn't matter, because it was all about the feel anyway. What a guy. His mistakes are better than most people's perfection.

I love that story about Eruption...
I have a sister who's not a VH fan, but Eruption always completely blows her away, every time. She's so cute. She looks at me and goes "That's UNBELIEVABLE. LISTEN to that! How does he DO it????" and all I can say is, "It's Eddie Van Halen...he just...doesn't even have to TRY. He just...DOES it."

So...if they had a gig on the weekend and he wanted to practice his solo guitar spot, and the solo guitar spot was basically "Eruption," I wonder if he "played it right" when he did it at the gig, and I wonder what the audience's reaction was???

A mistake on Eruption? It's one of those that only Eddie would know where it was. I'm interested in where exactly it is. In A Simple Rhyme has a mistake at the end of it. You can Ed clang a string at the end of it, right before it goes into Growth or Tank or whatever it's called.

Hey Brownsound, I remember him saying it was in the tapping section somewhere.

does anyone have any live recordings of eruption from near the time it was recorded? compare it to the studio and check it for differences.

yeah, but it really is kinda different every time he plays it so it is hard for me to tell. I'm not that great on the guitar so its tough for my ears to pick it out.

Eruption, one of those things that, yeah, it's recorded as something, but it will never sound the same twice.

Kind of like Iron Butterfly's Inna Godda Devita (sp?????)... that thing got longer and longer the more often they played it.

You know when I read a while ago that Eddie said he screwed up on the high end of "Eruption" I started listening to it to try to find the mistake, even so much as blasting it to try to hear it clearer. I think this mistake is during the tapping when he's at his highest point you can kinda hear a string clank when he switches his positioning to go back down, that's about as close to a mistake as I can hear.

I can hear that too Brett, and I have noticed it before but I never paid any mind to it. To me it just seemed like that was the way it was supposed to be. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

I think we do not hear a mistake because that is the way guitar is supposed to be played...Eddie set the tone....BUT..what if he re-did Eruption..what would it sound like? Interesting!!!!!!http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

I know what you mean, vaijr. I started a thread about this a while back. Only I was tossing out the idea of a brand new Eruption-type instrumental from Eddie on the next album, and how cool that would be. I'd suggested calling it "Eruption 2000". I just think that would be so killer. An all new blow-away rip-ass solo that would once again have every guitar player saying, "What the fuck?!"

WOLFIE: I know Eddie could do something like Eruption 2000 with an impact like Eruption from VH 1. All we need is a new album and he needs to "feel" like he needs to accomplish something "new" again..I think that is how Eruption number one was created...let's wait and see.

I hear 'ya, man. If anyone could actually top the original Eruption, it would be the master himself. Here's hoping ...

BrownSound1, you mentioned Ed's "mistake" at the end of In A Simple Rhyme. I never heard that before. I'll have to listen to it again. Another example would be the last note on Ballot Or The Bullet where you can hear the string actually break.

Yeah at the end of "Ballot Or The Bullet" is awesome...when the string breaks Ed goes "Wow!"
