View Full Version : Songs I don't want to hear on this tour...

A few songs have been done to death on previous tours (or been given far too much radio play) and I'd be happy never to hear them again. Songs such as:
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love,
You Really Got Me and
Runnin' With the Devil
are the most flagrant offenders. Hopefully we won't hear them this tour.

Maybe for us die-hards who listened to the albums, watched the shows, listened to boots, constantly.
But for most, they would want to hear those three songs.
And THEY will be played. No doubt about it.

Wow, thousands of people would leave the show pissed if these aren't played. It's not a Van Halen show without "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" as I think it's been played on 99% of their shows since day one.
However I want to hear all 3 of those songs you listed as I have never heard Dave and Ed play them live in person.
I would say "Dancing In The Streets" would be the one I wouldn't want to hear...ever.

You Really Got Me

It should be noted that I wouldn't be totally upset if they played any of those songs, I would just prefer to hear something else in it's place.

Jump
That's about it, and since Dave considers that his signature song, he'll always sing it in concert.
I didn't want to hear Panama or ATBL with Sammy anymore, because I was tired of the same exact Dave-era songs being played, but since Dave will be doing the singing now, I'm okay with hearing them again.
It'll be nice to hear Hot For Teacher played by Van Halen for the first time since 1984.
I'd love to hear the Full Bug, personally.
Jump
ATBL
YRGM
Panama
Dancin' In The Street
Pretty Woman
I like those songs, but since we hear the first 4 on every tour, I'd rather hear something different for a change. And I don't want to hear the last 2 simply because those are cover songs you'd rather not hear Van Halen do live anyway.
right-here-i-say
08.17.07, 10:31 AM
I would rather not hear YRGM since they didn't write it. I would love them to substitute with another Dave version of "God Bless the Child."
Roth singing "Running With The Devil" gave me chills in 2002. He does that song really well live and I'm looking forward to hearing it.

I agree. I didn't like seeing 'Dancing In The Streets' on BOBW nevermind hearing it live. But.....if I am hearing it live, that means I'm at a Van Halen concert which to me is a good thing.

I really could go without YRGM, but you know it's going to be played. But from the "maybe they won't be played" list, I'd pick "Dancin' In the Streets" and "(Oh) Pretty Woman" and...hell just any of the cover songs. They're fun and all, but we really need some deep cuts in place of covers. I know they'll play at least two of them (YRGM and probably Roy Orbison's boring song), but let's hope we don't get "Dancin'" or even "WHATGTG"..."You're No Good" would be a treat, though, since it's pretty much "Down In Flames." Cut some of the covers and put in some deep stuff like "Women In Love," "Fools," "The Full Bug" and so-forth. I'm hoping for at least two songs that Dave hasn't been playing the last ten years that AREN'T expected. We'll see if they can throw a few in for the die-hards.
Pretty Woman, Jamie's Cryin', and Dancing in the Street.

Wolfie is a panty waste IF he did indeed choose the songs for the setlist and picked Pretty Woman instead of Hang 'Em High, The Full Bug, or even Secrets for that matter. VH has so many good original tunes, it's pathetic to play any covers at all.

Something tells me wolf chose more than what the set list was trimmed down to be. I am not in the camp of wanting to hear that song either...but I can tell you that when I am at the show and they crank into the tune, I'm really at that point, not going to bitch.
There's probably no chance of them not playing it, but You Really Got Me has really worn old for me.
I understand why they'll play it though.

YRGM & Jump will make good piss breaks. But the whole show will be a
piss break if I'm not in LA to see it. If they were cool they would just work
up a medley of the old staples. They aren't. I just hope they mix it up.
One of the most entertaining things for me about the press conference was
when Dave reminesced with Al about playing with his Dad. It was revealing
in a way and actually got Alex to crack open for a second and enjoy some of
their old commaraderie. Some of that worked into the set would be cool.

Jump and Panama are REQUIRED for them to play. Spammy did those songs well, but DLR will bring the magic back into those two songs that have been missing since 1984.
I agree though, regarding "Ait Talking Bout Love". I could go without. Ditt for "Someone get me Doctor".
"Running with the Devil" is a toss up. If they dont play it, no big deal. If they do, I'll be yelling as loud as I can just like every other classic VH fan. It would be a great way for Wolfgang to get some center stage attention, though.

There's very little chance at all, that I could get my way.....
But here's a list songs that I would prefer N O T be included in any setlist for this tour:
RWTD
YRGM
ON FIRE
YOU'RE NO GOOD
DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
WOMEN IN LOVE
FOOLS
LOSS OF CONTROL
COULD THIS BE MAGIC?
IN A SIMPLE RHYME
UNCHAINED
PUSH COMES TO SHOVE
OH, PRETTY WOMAN
DANCING IN THE STREET
1984 / JUMP
I'LL WAIT
And it should go without saying, but I'll gladly say it again.... and again.... No Sammy songs !!!

No we can't. That'd be like Led Zeppelin not playing Stairway. It's just unheard of.
Seriously guys, you've got to realize that there's going to be a lot of "casual" fans there that want to hear "the hits". And why shouldn't they? They're all great songs! Yes, I'd like to hear some of the more obscure songs as well, but I EXPECT to hear Jump, Panama, Ain't Talkin' Bout Love, Runnin' With The Devil, etc. What's wrong with that?

It won't kill me to hear Jump, and I don't mind hearing Panama and ATBL at all. I want to hear DAVE with the band perform it !!
As for RWTD, I have NEVER liked that song, nor YRGM. Compared to most fo the other songs on the first album, they rank at the bottom. I would ALWAYS prefer to hear most of the other songs on the first album, but not YRGM, RWTD and On Fire.... The "other" songs on the Lp just rock Better. Why wouldn't I AWLAYS want Better ??????

You have an impressive set list there, but even if they played everything on it, that's only 18 songs. Dave said they were doing 25 at the PC.
If it were up to me, I'd put all of the 6 pack in play, with the following exceptions:
Jump/I'll Wait/Dancing In The Streets - Give us a guitar oriented show, leave the keyboards at home.
"Big Bad Bill" - Jan Van Halen is dead, and I don't see them dragging any other clarinet player out on tour, so consider this one out of bounds.
Other than that, any song from any Van HALEN album should be workable.
"Me Wise Magic"/"Can't Get This Stuff No More" - I'd like to hear them, but it seems Dave wants to forget those songs existed, I can understand that, given the whole soap opera of 1996.
"New" songs from earlier in this decade - we know some of these songs were nearly complete, so they could be performed live. I would recommend rotating at least one, or maybe two of these new songs into the set. Van HALEN fans want to hear some new stuff, and if the band happens to be label shopping (seems to be some question whether WB has any first rights to a new album or not) then performing the new material live will generate label interest in Van HALEN as an active band rather than "just another nostalgia act playing the hits".
And that's exactly what they said they were at the press conference, right?

I've heard that song some many times, in so many contexts that I instinctivey cringe when I hear the opening. Hell, last summer, my dad took me to this buffet restaurant in Oklahoma that caters to old folks (like my dad). Pastel decor, jello for desert, that sort of thing. They had a live organ player who was old enough to know Moses, playing "soothing" music, apparently to help the digestion. Even he whipped out a rendition of Jump. Any Sammy song- I don't think Dave could pull them off-Sammy just had a different way of writing lyrically and the vocal range is different. Obviously no Gary songs- but as far as the first 6-pack of VH albums, here's what I don't really want to hear:
Atomic Punk
You're No Good
And The Cradle Will Rock . . .(it's really not that great of a song)
Dancing In The Streets
Gril Gone Bad
I would love it however if "Dirty Movies", "Full Bug", and "Hang 'Em High" were played or "Take Your Whiskey Home".
"Eruption" is way overplayed and I think Ed could play something a LOT better nowadays, but I would be sad if they didn't play it on tour or at least include it in his solo.:headbang:

Unchained is Van Halen's signature song!
If so, who SIGNED it?
-------IN A SIZE 5 DRESS?
Did I do this right? I don't want to hear Ice Cream Man, Just a gigalo (sp?)and that song that Adam Sandler and Chris Farley frolicked in the pool with.
I can't get that nasty scene out of my head.

I have seen the Stones leave out Satisfaction on the 1999 No Security Tour. The Stones tour more than VH ever will. I love the tune, but wasn't disappointed the Stones left it out. I think comparatively and obviously VH only has 6 Roth era records to cull hits from. Many of which haven't been played in 2 decades. I hope they cram in as many of those tunes as possible. Include Jump, Panama, Unchained, ATBL, RWTD, YRGM, HTF, EWS, DTNA, BG, etc.
They will definitely do Jump. I like the tune and I am not sorry to say it just might be their signature song of any era of VH. It was their biggest hit and was out when they hit their peak. Hey they kept doing Why Can't This Be LOve every tour during the VH Mach II years (I hate that tune) so I don't think having Dave sing Jump back in Van Halen is such a bad trade off.

I just want to hear some of their really good songs when i go, Jump, Aint Talkin bout Love, You Really Got Me, Atomic Punk, Mean Street, Eruption. You know, stuff like that, Im just stoked to even get to go to Van Halen:headbang:
I loved 1984 when it first came out but over the years I listen to it less and less. I hope they leave I'll Wait out and don't really care if they do Jump or not. I would like to hear Drop Dead Legs! I don't get the whole "I'm sick of this or that song" thing. 1984 was the last of the 6 pack and it's 23 years old. So if your sick of the classics why bother going at all?

What a poor choice to open the 04 shows with that tune. I'll be heading to the john as soon as the fingers hit the keyboard.

Having the rehearsal setlist in mind, I could do without "I'll Wait" (too slow & plastic), "Pretty Woman", "...And The Cradle Will Rock!" and "Little Dreamer".
I'd rather listen to "Me Wise Magic", "Secrets", "Hear About It Later" and even think that they could play "Humans Being" as the lead vocalist is not decisive (remember Gary in 1998?)...
Of course, anything from DLR personal catalog would be unwelcomed !!!
If you don't know the setlist...

As a follow up, believe it or not I want to hear Jump and Panama -- even though they've been done to death. I've *got* to hear Dave do those with Eddie, along with a long list of others of course.

I'd rather hear anything more offa FW or 84 than VHI in its entirety.
Little Dreamer? FYLT? kinda filler-y if still kinda killer-y. And it would
not hurt my feelings at all to miss YRGM or RWTD. Hey, I love the 1st
record, but DD was the 1st tour I saw and all those originals were great
live.

Guess Wolf really digs VHI. Would been funny if he was into III.
All the old folks here showing their ignorance...all of you old timers who have seen VH with Dave are now saying which songs you DON'T want to hear....:D :brickwall ...HOW FUCKING SELFISH OF YOU!:brickwall
That's like if you haven't seen a family member for a really long time...and when you do see them you are thinking about what you don't want them to be wearing when you see them!
WHO CARES?!? For the people who haven't seen Ed Al with Dave we will take anything we can get...at least I will.....

I was so seriously hoping for them to play "Yankee Rose", I think it is too bad theu are not.
IMO, there is no doubt that "Yankee Rose" and a few others were slated for a VH stage until the split in 1985.
YMMV.

Jump.
Didn't do much for my digestion.:barf:
:funny:
I would have say that one dose not do much for me either, it will be good time for a head call and beer run.:)
