View Full Version : Song titles sound familiar to anyone else?

If there's one thing I'm worried about with this project, it's Sam's lyrics. He's a great singer and performer, but he has a tendency to rely on cliches. From the album listing:
01. Avenida Revolution
02. Soap on a Rope
03. Sexy Little Thing (Wasn't this a DRL song?)
04. Oh Yeah
05. Runnin' Out (Runnin' w/the Devil)
06. Get It Up (Get Up)
07. Down the Drain
08. My Kinda Girl
09. Learning to Fall (Learning to See)
10. Turnin' Left
11. Future in the Past
Hmm. Re-hashing ideas or coincidence?
When I saw "Down the Drain," my mind immediately lept to "Somebody Get Me a Doctor." That being said, though, there are only so many rock cliches...and when you have a catalog that spans three decades, you're bound to rehash some stuff along the way.

I guess not that it matters one single fuck-hair, I felt the same way when i saw the titles.
"Avenida Revolution" is a great title, but the rest are quite commonplace types of ideas that won't really stick in the mind.
I was hoping for a little more originality but it's not that great a deal. Cool titles for songs are pretty rare, and very few bands are much good at it, much less rock bands.

who cares? from what the first two tracks we've heard sound like, it seems like good time rock with lots of energy. I am so pumped. I haven't been this psyched about a new album in freakin' years. A couple of decades maybe.

I think people put to much into the Zep stuff. I don't think this band is trying to push a cultural revolution and times are much different.
These guys are looking to score with a new version of 80's guitar driven, top down, margarita drinkin, doobie smokin, line snort'n, x poppin, glue huffin, party rock and roll.

I was more keen on the title, "Elbow Farts" for the Intro track.
I guess that is why I'm commenting on Internet forums instead of writing Gold records.

Making those connections is more than a stretch. I love the title Future is in the past. Without hearing the song yet, the title alone to me says that the "past" is a track record that should not be ignored. That the past is a predictor for the future. It is the opposite concept of the old saying " Live in the past you die in the past" !

Sexy Little Thing was never a David Lee Roth song. I'm not seeing Down the Drain tied in with SGMAD either (yes those three words are in the song, but if we nitpicked Sam could never write a song titled "Hit the Ground" or something). Let's give it a rest and wait until the damned album comes out before we criticize anything, shall we?
Soap On A Rope is one of the dumbest song titles I've heard. Chickenfoot is one of the dumbest band names I've ever heard. But damned if both haven't delivered and kicked me in the ass so far :headbang:

And would he copy Gary Cherone too? Give me a break.

They are all simply song titles. Sure you could go the Led Zeppelin route and name the tunes after things that have absolutely nothing to do with the subject ("Black Dog" was named for a mongrel that followed Plant around when the band was recording in a shack in the woods someplace in rural England) or simply quote a line in the chorus.
By playing some simple word association, all of these titles could be seen to relate to other artist's stuff.
01. Avenida Revolution -Revolution #9, Beatles
02. Soap on a Rope -The Pope Smokes Dope, David Peel
03. Sexy Little Thing - Sex Type Thing, STP or Crazy Lil' Thing Called Love, Queen
04. Oh Yeah -Ooh Yeah, Hall & Oates
05. Runnin' Out -Runnin' Scared, Roy Orbison
06. Get It Up -Let's Get It Up, AC/DC
07. Down the Drain -Up The Creek, Cheap Trick or Plynth-Water Down The Drain, Jeff Beck
08. My Kinda Girl - My Kinda Lover, Billy Squier or Stubborn Kind of Fellow, Marvin Gaye or My Girl Bill, Jim Stafford
09. Learning to Fall - Learning To Fly, Tom Petty or Foo Fighters
10. Turnin' Left - Turnin' Japanese, The Vapors or Offramp, Pat Metheny
11. Future in the Past - Days Of Future Past, Moody Blues
So what? Ultimately, it's the tunes themselves that matter. We'll see in a couple of months. :thumb:

When I saw this thread this morning I expected the whole thread to be posts like Craigs. Pretty shocked it took all day for someone to do that.
I think it may be fair to just wait until the disc is out and the song and lyrics are open for all to interpret. At the moment, its pretty easy to put your own spin on it (be it negative or positive) as to what or how the titles and lyrics may bear resemblance to any other of the 1000000 rock songsthat are out there.
One point to consider though, the guy that some people are ragging for his apparent lack of songwriting substance has been in the biz, and in the biz of writing some fuckin classic rock songs for the past 30 years, longer than some of his critics have been alive.
For every throw away lyric, and hey this is rock music after all, written by Sam, not often is his talent spoken for in songs such as halfway to memphis, judgment day, mine all mine, best of both worlds, feelin, karma wheel, CUF, right now etc etc.
Yeah bag him for bad lyrics, but acknowledge the good okay.
If you want thought provocation in a song Bruce, Bono, Bob D have all you need. If you want classic, up to 11, rockin 4 minute gems, well Sammy and his pals can help you.

Avenida Revolution sounds cool.....the rest are by the numbers, title-wise. I'm not going into this expecting any real lyrical content....the first 2 tunes attest to that. I'm expecting good guitar, solid bass and drums, and quality rock vocals.

If you sit down, really look at it, and are completely honest with yourself, you'll realize that what people tend to name anything, be it a group, tune or object, all names are pretty fucking stupid.
Say any of the following out loud two or three times, and tell me you disagree.
Blue Oyster Cult
The Popiel Pocket Fisherman
The Super Friends
The Pet Rock
Led Zeppelin
The Wacky Wall Walker
Hot Pockets
The Justice League Of America
Rice A Roni
Jumbo Shrimp
Arby's Burger
The thing is, while being somewhat moronic, just about all have held up through the years (The jury is still out on the Arby's Burger, yet come on...a burger with no meat patty? Yeah, that should go over like a pregnant pole-vaulter. ). So the band has a dumb name and the song titles are on the trite side. "I Wanna Rock And Roll All Night And Party Every Day" by KISS sounds fairly insipid as well...until you crank the tune up loud on the stereo. :smokin:

Yes. They are all English words I am able to use in sentences.
From another thread:
The entire Chickenfoot project could be scapped now that we know [a fellow VH Linker] feels SOAR was a let down for him. Ya never know
Maybe we Chickenfoot should be canned because not only did they let someone down, now they're using familiar, easy-to-use words for song titles. Those bastards!

Damn, that's the second person here to say Led Zeppelin is a stupid name.
I say it's damned clever. Whatever. Sometimes I just have to shake my head.
Listen, lyrics aren't always a dealbreaker (esp w hard rock bands), but on the
other hand, I'm kind of over listening to records for the guitar solos. It doesn't
hurt to at least aspire to originality. There's a fine line between stupid and clever.

A band name of Chickenfoot will have as much chance of succeeding as a Lead Zeppelin has in gaining flight off the ground... ;-)

Who gives a fuck about the titles, if there not too original?
I remember first buying "F.U.C.K" way back in 91' and seeing "Judgement day" on there. There was a song by Whitesnake 2 years earlier, which was my fave song. I thought "What the fuck?" until I heard it. To this day "Judgement day" is one of my fave songs.....and "Pleasure dome" was another. I thought that it looked to much like Frankie goes to hollywoods "Welcome to the pleasure dome".
But when I heard it, I could'nt give a fuck about the title. The music rocked, so SO WHAT!!!.

I think you could probably play this game with anything. He might be channeling the Beatles:
01. Avenida Revolution (You say you want a Revolution?)
02. Soap on a Rope (the long and winding rope... oh wait)
03. Sexy Little Thing (Sexy Sadie?)
04. Oh Yeah (She loves you Yeah, yeah, yeah?)
05. Runnin' Out (Run for your life?)
06. Get It Up (Get back?)
07. Down the Drain (I'm Down)
08. My Kinda Girl (Hello Little Girl)
09. Learning to Fall
10. Turnin' Left
11. Future in the Past
Point is with a couple hundred or more songs to Sam's credit and about a billion songs being released ever, I'm guessing you can find a lot of "re-hashing". I'm guessing coincidence. :)

I'm still trying to figure out why people are so opposed to the band name!?!?!
I like it. It's a pointless, silly, funny, dumb name. A band name doesn't have to make a political or social statement in it's name, or every song title.
Why can't this just be about rockin' out and having a good time doing it??
I'm still wondering why people are obsessed over the titles of the songs and the band name at all? It's a bunch of fun rock tunes, please remove the sticks from your asses. Like any one of us became Van Halen fans because of the Shakesperean lyrics and the socially-relevant band name. It's FUN music with great musicianship, which is EXACTLY what Chickenfoot is.
That's what's great about rock music...it can be trite (yes even the Mighty Van Halen was trite at times), it doesn't matter.

Hey, I liked Hootie. It was a refreshing change from a lot of the shit that was put out in the mid-90's.
Darius Rucker has gone on, and now is having a good run in country music.

Sorry, just an easy cheap shot. I don't mind them - I actually like them a lot better now. Still bitter that that album was crushing the world and no one cared about Balance at the time. I'm much better now. At least they were a real band unlike now.
So I will even retract my exception and say that you can say nothing about a band or music based on titles. How's that?

Yet that is too broad a statement as well. For instance, if you see a song titled "Larger Than Life" by KISS, without even hearing it the chances are quite good that you know exactly what the subject matter is going to be.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. :smokin:

That's kind of my point. Maybe the song is great and the name sucks, or vice versa. Maybe you thought it was about one thing and it wasn't. Maybe we are dead on in our preconceptions sometimes, maybe we're not. Ultimately you need to listen to the damn thing and only then will you know anything about it.

I guess I had an unfair advantage at one time. I spent nearly 15 years in radio. Getting all the advanced copies, interviews, etc.
Now that I'm as far from that end of my life. I'm at the point if being a "regualr" consumer again, like I was prior to radio. I listen to SIRIUS in the truck and it takes me a while to dig new stuff. Like Theory of a Deadman; I hate the band name and judged what the music would be like, based on it. Boy was I wrong.
