Have I got an CD for you! Check out Richie Kotzen's "Intergalactic Fusion Experience" and you'll find a whole new respect for the guy who fucked Rikki Rockets girlfriend.
This disc is chock full of odd times, scary scales, inverted melodies and great voicings. It's all instrumental, except where Richie sings along with his playing. Gregg Bissonette provides some of the most eye opening drum work I've ever heard him play. His kit sounds soooo good it's maddening. Jeff Berlin takes up a few tunes on bass, which needs no explaination. (ok, just one...Holy Shit!)
But Richie really surprised me. Here I thought he was some wanker who couldn't even hold a shitty job in Poison, but actually he is seriously studied on this project. It's obvious upon first listen, he has done his homework, recognizing everything from Miles to Edward in his playing.
This is fusion at it's finest. Get this CD today, tomorrow, but no later. Go to amazon if you have to. Just give it a listen! I wouldn't steer you wrong.
Warning: Fusion is not for everyone. There is some really complex stuff going on here, so beware!

For any of you guys who don't already know this. . .RICHIE KOTZEN is a BAD-ASS guitar player. He's got serious blues/soul chops and a killer voice. Anybody who's seen him live can relate. He's definitely NOT a 80s one-trick-pony shredder.

I'll check my dryer for my missing sticks too!
I haven't heard the new MR.Big, what's it like with Kotzen? I have a feeling that the CD I recommended (highly) is nothing like Mr. Big. "Inner Galactic..." is fusion, mind bending, ass kickin, try and tap your toe to this, fusion!
Honestly, I've got so many other bands on cue right now, I don't see myself getting Mr.Big for a long time if ever. I'm still curious, so give me a review!

It doesn't work with Kotzen as well as did with Gilbert. The new Mr.Big album features too many ballads.
IMO, only one song rocks; the opening song "Electrified" (Nice bass solo by Billy on that song).

Judging by the last coupla of Big CD, I figured as much. Oh, well.
If you need a Billy fix, try the new "Niacin" out. Billy's tone is out-of-this world. Like chocolate cake, covered in chocolate fudge, chocolate ice cream, and chocolate sprinkles. Whoo, boy is it fat!
They also do a cover of "Mean Street" that'll get you off! Dennis Chambers on kettles, John Novell on B3. Worth every $!

I've got the new Niacin CD. Billy truly is the king of bass guitar!!!
He mentioned in the Guitar World interview (3/2000) that he has two more solo releases coming out this year. He'll sing on the other and the other one is all instrumental. Man, he's been real busy, four new albums in a year and a world-tour with Mr.Big!!!

paradiddle... are you a fan of the two liquid tension experiment cd's. Not only does it sound like something you would like, they wrote and recorded each in a week.
for those that do not know, LTE is basically Dream Theater minus vocals and a different bass player.

I usually shop at this mom&pop record store to support local business, but they didn't have it. I imagine if I go to Tower or Virgin, they'll have it. Tell you what, I just got paid today, so I'll get it tonight and give you a review. Thanks for the tip!

Did Kotzen play on the last Dokken CD? If it wasn't him does can any one tell me who it was?
The guitarist on the last Dokken album was Reb Beach...From Winger Fame....freat guitarist......Richie Kotzen is now with Mr. Big.
"great guitarist" not "freat" oops

I checked out Liquid Tension Experiment this weekend and I like it. It's right up my alley, progressive, inventive, very talented and full of surprises. You were right MikeyMetalhead, good stuff. Mike Portnoy is thunderous!
p.s. Anyone had a chance to hear Kotzen's "Inner Galactic Fusion Experience" yet. I'd love to hear whatcha think!

Ok, new direction here. I had the shit scared outta me last night! I got ZAKK WYLDE's Black Label Society "Sonic Brew" and cranked it up.
Holy Cow does this stuff growl! It's mean, teethy, dirty sounding stuff. Very heavy, but with a decidedly delicious groove. I don't know how heavy you guys like it, but this weighs a ton. It's the kinda shit that causes mothers to grab their children off the street when you drive by!
And of course it's full of great ZAKK riffs, and rips. I dig this guy alot! You can check him out by doing a search at www.cdnow.com (http://www.cdnow.com)

Haven't found it yet (Kotzen). Hope to get up north to Virgin this weekend and see if they have it.
Do you know if anyone carries the tribute CD. I can find the original crappy one but not the new one. Is it still mail order only.

I though for sure it was finally released in the US. If anyone'll have it it'll be Virgin. Even though their prices still suck, their selection rules. You may have to special order KOTZEN if they don't have it. I'd do it, it's worth the wait. Do you stay away from online CD stores?

Hey Paradiddle, it seems you and me are stuck to fusion material. http://216.71.70.54/vhlforum/smilies/smile.gif
I love Intergalactic Fusion Experience, and I love Vertu. They're a band with Richie on guitar, Stanley Clarke on bass, Lenny White on drums, Rachel Z on keyb, and Karen Briggs (maybe I'm wrong with her name) on violin. They're the followers of Return to Forever, in terms of compositions and sound, a must have.
On the rock side, I suggest everyone to check out last Racer X's Technical Difficulties, with the comeback of Paul Gilbert to a heavy sound and technically incredible playing. Two great cds.

So that's where Paul ended up after Big. I loved the old Racer X stuff, I'll check this new one out. I loved their old drummer, plays for Priest now, what's his name, Scott Travis? What a bad ass he is. Who's the lineup on the new Racer?

Scott Travis from Judas Priest and Racer X lives right here in Va Beach. He used to play in a band with a friend of mine. I've even jammed with him at a club one night. Right now he's working at Mars Music. Can you believe that!!! Totally true.

Racer X:
PAUL GILBERT : guitars
JEFF MARTIN : vocals
JOHN ALDERETE : bass
SCOTT TRAVIS : drums
Paul Gilbert's new CD called Alligator Farm will be released in Japan on June 28th. The musicians are Tony Spinner(guitar), Scotty Johnson(guitar and keys), Mike Szuter(bass), Jeff Martin(drums), and Paul on screaming out the lead vocals and playing insane guitar.
BTW, Guitar Room seems like a cool place today. Main Discussion is too hot for me. http://www.vhlinks.com/vhlforum/smilies/biggrin.gif

So Bruce Bouillett(sp)didn't make it on the new one? Coincidently, he's got a credit for producing on the latest VH tribute album.
I'm glad to see the whole crew back together, I can't wait to pick that up.
Scott Travis works at Music Mars (stupid name for a store)!!??? Wow, that guy really wails, I hope he's happy doing whatever!

Apparently Bruce Bouillet had some kind of an arm injury during the recording of Technical Difficulties so he was unable to join.
I'm not sure if Bruce's injury is serious, I sure hope it isn't!
[This message has been edited by MJPWolfgang (edited May 16, 2000 at 01:51 AM).]
But Technical Difficulties is really insane! I love that record, since the beginning in "double bass drum mode" it kicks ass. Bruce Bouillet is listed in the credits section of the booklet. Paul is insane on that record.
My other choices for this year are:
Dixie Dregs - California Screamin' - You'll find Steve Morse at top form there, shredding from the first to the last song, and even duelling with Dweezil Zappa on the Peaches' en Regalia Zappa song
Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory - John Petrucci shredding 'nuff said

Ever heard "Live in San Fransico: John McGlauhin, Paco DeLuca, and Al DiMeola"?
I know its flamenco, but it's live and it shreads!

Yeah man yeah!
Paradiddle, I LOVE Al DiMeola, he was the reason why I started playing guitar. Friday Night in San Francisco contains a HOT version of Mediterranean Sundance, great kickass song and great gym to play spanish guitar, full of "rasgueado" technique and fast and furious licks. I wonder how the hell Paco De Lucia can do that without a pick still!

Man ddregs!
You and me gotta get together with a 12pac and our record collections. It's uncanny how similar our tastes are. Better yet, I'd love to jam with you seeing how you're a fretboard freak, and me a kettlepounder!
Keep the suggestions for new music coming, at this point I'd buy anything you say is killer!
