Before this gets out of hand, Sam is not opening for Poison. He's simply playing a festival and happens to be on the same bill. He's not opening for Poison anymore than Van Halen supposedly opened for Bon Jovi in Europe back in the mid 90's. By the way, I've seen Dave open for the fake Bad Company and a couple of other really shitty acts as well and those weren't festival gigs, he was actually touring with them! Now before you guys go accusing me of starting shit, I'm just anticipating the inevitable here.:brickwall

I say John Waite is the opener. Everybody else is just there.

I think it the whole grand scheme of things in vanhalenland, we're way past this type of "who's opening for who" bravado. Le's here any of these guys play, and be creative with the setlist, since that's where they usually lack.

Nobody is opening for anyone else at this festival.
I don't get it why you all get so sensitiv about the term "opening act"?
Even if he is not the "opening act" because it is a festival it doesn't change the fact that Poison gets the better slot because they obviously draw more people than Sammy Solo. And that's also the reason why bigger acts have smaller bands to open for. So if you want to call it opening or not doesn't change the fact that noone cares for his solo act.
PS: Sorry if Isound like Sanista, but it's 05:40 in the morning here in Germany and I'm not quite in a legale state of mind.......hope you get my point.

oh, bullshit. we've had to hear the cracks about Dave playing casinos and shit for how long, let us have a little fun with this one. :D
BTW, Sam has played a "food festival" too, so i don't want to hear any shit about Roth at Ribfest. http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a372/jeepsguitars/mad15.gif

If Sammy plays right before Poison, then Poison better hope he has a cold or something to hold him back.
If he puts on a show like he did when I saw him in Raleigh on the Sam/Dave tour, Poison might as well postpone until the next night.
Sammy wore the crowd out so bad in Raleigh, that it took halfway through Dave's set before they really got back into it....and obviously Dave was playing a far superior setlist to anything Poison could ever think about playing.

Ummm, everytime I see a bunch of bands playing on the same bill, the last ones who play is the headliner.
Monsters of Rock with VH. Lets see Kingdom Come started, then Winger, Metallica, Scorpians and then VH.
I saw Poison with Ratt and LA Guns. LA Guns opened, RATT and then Poison.
Seeing Alice Cooper, Dokken, Warrant and Slaughter, guess which band closed the show? Guess which one opened?
Hagar is opening for Poison.
Monsters of Rock with VH. Lets see Kingdom Come started, then Winger, Metallica, Scorpians and then VH.
Ummmmmm, Winger was never a part of the Monsters of Rock bill in 1988. Dokken, however, was. And Dokken occupied the 2nd spot on the bill.

Considering the 40-50 year old crowd attending that show they will all be going home to bed after Sammy anyway, I think Sammy has the premier slot on that bill personally.

Van Halen opened for The Rolling Stones in 1981.
David Lee Roth opened for the original, re-united Bad Company in 1999(that's what I've heard, although I left after the DLR Band gig ended).
Edgar Winter and Eric Sardinas have opened for Roth in recent years.
At least King Papa Diamond Dave headlined the Ribfest.:D

So how is this any different than when Dave played a Ribfest? I think alot of the same people who posted about Dave and laughed aren't laughing so hard now. These are the same guys who kept quiet when Sammy's tour with Lynyrd Skynrd was canceled to lack of interest 3 years ago. They are the same one's that comment when Dave has had low attendance or cancled gigs. Sammy has had the same shit happen. One isn't better than the other then. But yes Sammy IS opening for Poison. Just like Dave opened for the Original Bad Company. Or when Kiss opened for Aerosmith. Kiss and Aero said it was a co-headliner, but Kiss happened to open every show. I also think it is funny that on the Long Road to Cabo Sammy made barbs that the fans in Kiss t-shirts going to the Sam and Dave show were Roth fans. What does Sammy think Poison's credibility are? No one cares when the original Posion are together. Say what you want about Kiss, but people cared when the original Kiss tours. Hey I am saying As much as Dave is a hypocrite, Sammy isn't any better, and now Sammy is opening for Poison.

Looks like a club gig to me... On a weeknight the best band usually plays second to last.... And some silly band goes on at 12pm to no one in the audience... But claims they're "headlining..."

I beg to differ. I've seen Sammy solo more than a dozen times and the crowd was always standing room only and packed. Especially the last show back in May of 05 in St Louis, more than 18,000 people were there. I hardly think that no one cares for his "solo act". I still say Sammy ain't opening for anybody and Van Halen DID NOT open for Bon Jovi.

Winger....did they play any of those dates? I believe it was Dokken at my show.
Hagar is opening for Poison.
It could be worse...
Steven Pearcy of Ratt opened for Metal Skool and he ended with Round and Round, which inspired the Kings of 80's satire to open their set with the same song...then lead singer for Metal Skoll then asked the audience "wasn't the guy that sang this song just opening for us?" Too funny.

I can't knock 'em live. I had to take the wife to see them a few years ago (another multi-act show, Slaughter, Dokken, Cinderella, and Poison).
Poison was actually pretty good. I was never much of a fan, but was familiar with most of their material.
Cinderella played before Poison, and as far as I'm concerned, they blew Poison away.
But really, in multiple-act shows like this, there really isn't a stone-cold closer...the last two acts are usually the top dogs.
Like Ozzfest a couple years ago....last two acts were Judas Priest and Black Sabbath.
I would characterize that day as all the other bands opening for those two.
Which one went on last was irrelevant.
A crap load of people left after Priest. That's what they came for. Then a crap load more came in to see Sabbath, the ones who were bullshitting in the concourse waiting to see Ozzy.
I don't really consider anyone an "opening act" or "closer" unless there's only two bands on the bill.
In big-ass xxxx-fests, there are usually so many acts that the crowd is pretty much going to cycle in and out based on which bands are more important to different people.
Not sure what the big deal is folks.
Many acts on the bill....they're saving the best for last....at least that's somebody's take on it.
And, yes, VH did open for Bon Jovi for some European dates on the Balance tour.....an extended slot, but nevertheless, Halen first, Jovi second.
So, this is what it has come down to? Not, if or when VH will play again, tour, ect...just who is opening or playing at some summer concert gig? click................................

Van Halen DID open up for Bon Jovi in Europe. I know, I was in Austria when it happened. VH opened up for Bon Jovi the whole tour and it wasn't at festivals either with lots of of other bands (other than Rock AM Ring in Germany). It was Bon Jovi with Special Guests - Van Halen (during VH's 1995 Balance Tour). Bon Jovi has a huge fan base in Europe and VH was trying to tap in to the European market since thay hadn't played there for so long. I even have a boot of a show from Wembley Stadium.

Not a great bill at all. I can see John Waite opening but Grand Funk didn't have a whole lot of great songs. As for the closer, it should be Sammy.

When our favorite band can't even put out an album or keep a consitent lineup, are we really worried about Sam's position on the bill of some rinky-dink rock festival that he was added to at the last second?
Poison is a good live act believe it or not and they draw well. They probably have it in their contract for this show that they are the headliner. It seems that Sam was a late addition and that was the best slot available to him. Sam probably just wants to go out and play. Wow, what a concept.
Let's give both Sam and Dave a little slack on their solo careers, most artists would kill to have the solo careers that either of them have had. They have both been in the music business for 30 years and can still go out and deliver live, have a small but devoted fan base and both when at the right venue/event can draw well.
Sorry for the rant, but it seems that nobody here can fucking talk about Sam or Dave without cutting on them. Well how about everyone post their resume on the site and see how well you compare to Sam and Dave. Probably not that well. I know I don't, and I've done well for myself.

Point is that the last band is the most popular band 99.9% of the time.

I have never attended a show where the headliner did not play last. I have seen so many groups start playing at 12:00 its not even funny.
Not saying it does not happen but the norm is that the last band is the headliner.
Looking at the lineup, Sammy is opening for Poison. If the last band was Tribe Of Judah well that would be different. Poison is a name band and quite frankly sells better than Sammy.
Sam's solo career is about the same as Dave's. Otherwise one would have opened for the other at their Sam and Dave tour. It was a co-headlined tour.
At least be thankful that Sam is outselling Gary Cherone.

I saw Sam open for Journey at World Music Theatre outside of Chicago in 2003, I think...it didn't bother me...not in the last bit...and the crowd didn't seem to give a fuck either.

That all depends on the Wabos form on any given night. After seeing Sam & Dave together I felt Sammy KO'd Dave big time. The only thing that saved DLR from total embarrassment when I saw them was his backing band (Luzier, Lomenzo, & Young). IMO Sammy's achilles heel with the Wabos is Vic Johnson, I was unimpressed with his guitar ability (especially on the VH material).
Grand Funk Railroad includes original founding members Don Brewer (vocals and drums, writer and singer of the multi-million selling hit, We’re An American Band) and bassist Mel Schacher...
Joining Don and Mel are true "All Stars". Singer Max Carl (who Don calls "the best blue-eyed soul singer on the planet") is a rock veteran from 38 Special. Max penned and sang 38’s biggest hit "Second Chance" and was co-founder of California’s legendary Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. Lead guitarist Bruce Kulick is best known for his 12 years with KISS and also has credits with Michael Bolton, Meatloaf and Billy Squier. (KISS members Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley were influenced early on by Grand Funk.) Keyboardist Tim Cashion has a master’s degree in music from the University of Miami. Affectionately called "Dr. Tim", his credits include stints with Bob Seger’s Silver Bullet Band and English soul man Robert Palmer.
Grand Funk laid the groundwork for such bands as Foreigner, Journey, Van Halen and Bon Jovi with its signature hard driving sound, soulful vocals, muscular instrumentation and forceful pop melodies.

As the target audience for these bands hits their 30s, 40s, and 50s, the last time slot is getting worse and worse.
I'm 36 and saw the Sam and Dave tour in 2002. Dave "closed." The audience actually seemed a bit tired from Sammy's show that it took a bit to get them going.
Also, for those of us that have kids and babysitters, the BS of an encore for the closing act is annoying. Just come out and play the last two fucking songs! Pretending that you were coming back only because the crowd was cheering is not as cool when there's a babysitter at home collecting $10/hour.

Man, I must be old because I agree. That was the first thing I though of when I saw the bill, Poison doesn't start till 11:00? And that's if it's on schedule. I'd have to take a nap to be able to stay up that late. Even if you're not "headlining", I think I'd rather have the 8:00 slot myself.

Sammy is opening for Poison, deal with it....If Sammy was on after Poison , Poison would be opening for him............Geeeez
If Kiss goes on early, I will buy your argument.............
Everybody calm down here. Its a festival and Posion was probably booked first which is why they "headlining" and playing last. From the looks of that schedule, Sammy is still getting at least 90 minutes so its not like he is getting a crappy opening act slot. Much like Dave didn't "open" for Sammy (or vice versa depending on which show you saw) in 02.
This is no different than calling the Scoprions VH's opening act in MOR88 despite the 90 minute plus set they played each night. Its a all day rock festival; just go and enjoy yourself and be lucky the guy is out there playing somewhere (yes, this is a dig towards Ed)
Van Halen DID open up for Bon Jovi in Europe. I know, I was in Austria when it happened. This is true. Although it was VH's entire Europe tour, it was only about 20 shows for them. It made sense finacially since VH was not big enough to play the stadiums in Europe and Jovi had already booked a sold out Europe Tour. Some of the shows were festivals; some were just BJ/VH & a true opening act. I guess, technically, they were the "middle" act but they defiantely did open up for Jovi. VH got to play a little over an hour.

An opening act is only an opening act for someone that went to see the final act. Example: I went to see DLR opening for Bad Company in 1999. I left when Bad Company took the stage, so was DLR an opening act? No, not in my opinion. DLR was the only act on stage that night as far as I was concerned. The fact that some other (scary old) band took the stage later just meant that I was able to leave before the rest of the crowd.
:)
On the 2002 Sans Halen tour, one act went on stage before the other each night, but neither was an "opening act" as far as I was concerned.
Most of the time opening acts are bands or people you've never heard of. For example, how many people here had heard of Jonas or Rose Hill Drive before they "opened" for VH in 2004?

Honestly, Poison opened for Roth at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto for the Skyscraper tour and they were great live. My only advice...get a freakin' real seat for the drummer! That standing up playing crap has to go!
I also agree with the comments that noted how old some of us are getting and my need for a nap to get to the 11pm slot. I want my favorite band to go on immediately after the early bird special at the local family restaurant.

true that most of Sam's fan are fading by 11pm, bottom line is Poison -
or TBA, as the case may be (I agree, TBA fuckin rocks) - gets top billing
over your boy. Get over it. And yourselves.

What's truly surprising is that there seem to be so many Poison fans in the world.
When I was growing up, in my corner of the world they were considered a huge joke, even at the height of their popularity.
While I'm aware that Sam and the Wabos aren't quite big enough for headlining festival acts, I'm surprised that there are modern day promoters who still think Poison's big enough to cap a rockfest.

Best thing Poison ever did was open for Ratt on its first world tour. The ticket read:
RATT
Poison
I still have it.

clearly sammy is opening for poison. why the hell would a promoter set up a show and ask poison to headline, with hagar on the bill? that is quite ridiculous but fact.
even if i had no record deal and had the opportunity to open for poison i wouldn't do it. they should be opening for grand funk.

People complaining about when bands are playing is funny. How long have rock concerts been going on for? If you can't stay up to see a band play or you can't go to the show because you have to sleep, that most likely means you are too old to be listening to rock music in general and should move on.

Just because you can't stay up late doesn't mean your old. It could be caused by a four year old with a cold that is keeping him up all night coughing therefore he is in and out of your bed all night. Kids have that effect on young and old alike.

This thread is funny as hell! Face the fact...Sammy is opening for Poison. Yes, the same Poison who wore more makeup than Boy George. The same Poison that has a lead singer pursing a career as a country singer. The same Poison who has a guitar player who will be in the next Surreal Life (premieres March 12). The same Poison who were and are basically a fucking joke. I am actually surprised that Sammy is agreeing to this.
So what is the big problem here?

I wouldn't say Poison is great live, but they were pretty decent when I saw them a few years ago. It was fun

Hendrix played after The Who at Woodstock after most people had left. So maybe Sam is in the better place.

If Grand Funks on the same bill, it would be cool if Bruce Kulick jammed with Sammy. Bruce has been one of my fave guitarists ever. I've met him a few times too.
