Besides the fact that he's up there in age and doesn't NEED to do anything at this point in his career, he's had a lot more music in the last 10 years than a lot of bands, including Van Halen. You may not like the lyrics, fine, but IMO his last 2 albums have been some of his best music. Not 4 Sale especially.

A lot of the criticism towards Sammy comes across as jealousy and sour grapes because he has so many successfull side projects going. Why does it matter to any of us if he sells tequila or has clubs? Obviously his passion is for music, he's not making the bulk of his money from that anymore unless he's in Van Halen, so why else would he bother with it? I'm able to enjoy his music and concerts without paying attention to the Cabo commercials and goofy clothes, it has nothing to do with the music.

Sammy is older and a business man now, that happens to play in a band/ bands. For a guy his age, he's cool. VH will never go back to what it was in the mid-80s to early 90s, and thats OK. not a bad response but all of these mentioned are still directly related to the original artists product.(save for benatar) the zepp thing is zepp music. the eddie thing is eddie's music (w/jackson) save for his striped which is just protection not a side show. the benatar thing i don't know about and seems minor but I'll give you that one.

Cabo Wabo is directly related to Sam's original lyrical product. Just because it expanded into an empire doesn't mean its roots are any different than any of the other 'purists' you mentioned.

Frankenstriping legal protection would be only that if it was a mere matter of guarding copyright infringements via lawyers, and not for self-promotion or financial gain via hawking striped knick-knacks on the official website, at tour merchandise stands, and the VH Store.com with such things as tee shirts, lighters, and jewelry.

What you deem 'keepin' it real' is a matter of degrees and taste. Sam's a beach bum now, big whoop. Lots of people dig the realness of beach bummin'. Me included, but I'm biased...I'm a Southern Cal dude who enjoyed good tequila, hard whiskey, and bikini-clad babes in my youth, just as Dave, Ed, Mike, and Al touted and whored and played up for those same images long before Sam joined the band, them being a Southern Cal band and all. Sam took it further in his solo acts, but it's still the same bowl of cherries. He's just good at it. This ain't no new gig for hard rock, much less ANY member of Van Halen. It's no more or less real for me than it was when I was 12 years old at the Fair Warning show. Sex, drugs, booze, rock and roll...musicians promoting any or all of the preceding via their music - this ain't a recent revelation.

I don't care if they lend their version of You've Really Got Me to Nissan as in VH's case. It's sort of fun to be watching a football game and to get a pleasant surprise of a VH song in a silly commercial, a trip down memory lane. There's no such thing as pure artists in the commercial mainstream. If they sell tee shirts at their shows, they're no longer mere musicians. Actually, he openly says that VH allowed him to be where he is today. There was a VH1 special and he talks about VH taking him into the stratosphere that put him on a level financially he would have never obtained on his own. I don't think he specifically says it every time he's interviewed but he definitely gives credit where credit is due.

Very few "pure" musicians ever do it just for the music.

You do it for a variety of reasons. One is to be popular. Another is to get laid. Another is to make money. This is regardless of any art form. There is a need to be accepted amongst peers.

In fact the vast majority of people play music for reasons outside the love of music.

He's been around since the early 70's, not just the 80's. He made a name for himself with Montrose, of course not as popular as Van Halen, but he wasn't unknown before Halen.

I don't think Sam is denying that Van Halen is a huge part of his current success, if anything, I think he' s probably ticked off that Van Halen didn't work out better in 2004. We all are.

I don't think Sam has ever denied his continued success because of his tenure in Van halen.

I guess some folks won't be satisfied until Sammy takes out a full page ad in the New York Times stating once and for all "Yes, my solo career wasn't quite as big as Van Halen, and my increased stature in the world of rock and roll elevated because I accepted Edward's invitation to join." Whatever it is that he's doing, he's spending time not making music, so how can he be a pure musician anymore? Is Axl Rose not a musician now because he hasn't released shit in over 10 years? Paul Stanley paints when KISS isn't doing anything, why should that tarnish his status as a musician?

Your logic makes no sense, what these guys do in their spare time makes no difference to me, why should anyone care? According to you , these musicians should do nothing in their life other than constantly make music. No hobbies, no outside projects, nothing. Just music.
