View Full Version : Roth airs wrath after bosses' Stern lecture

Morning host David Lee Roth of WFNY (92.3 FM) spent four hours yesterday telling his bosses where they could stick their ideas for improving his low-rated show.

"They want me to copy Howard [Stern]," Roth said. "But I refuse to regiment this show. ... I told them I would quit if they will not let me do what I was hired to do, which is create something unique."

He referred to station manager Tom Chiusano and programming vice president Mark Chernoff, who met with him Tuesday, in terms that included "social retards," "beige baby-food sissies," "stooge" and "an ugly little dysfunctional worm."

He said they told him he should appeal to "a 35-year-old white male who likes Lynyrd Skynyrd" and asked him to stop using "foreign" and "ethnic" music for soundbeds.

He called that notion "racist," saying, "This show isn't designed for a demographic. It's for everyone."

This was hardly the first time Chiusano and Chernoff, who have worked for years with Stern and Don Imus, have been used as punching bags by their air talent.

"We are involved with all of our talent in working on their programs," a CBS Radio spokeswoman said.

The question is whether they will take as much from a fledgling host as they have from veterans earning millions of dollars for the company.

Officials at WFNY's parent, CBS, privately expressed concern with some of Roth's remarks.

Roth said he was told he will soon have a female newscaster who will read stories he can comment on.

"That's Robin Quivers," he said. "But there's only one Robin Quivers. Just like there's only one Howard and only one David Lee Roth."

He conceded that for his first four weeks, during which time his ratings took a steep plunge from Stern's levels, "I was like a fish flopping around at the end of a stick."

But he said he's a quick study and quoted Stern's comment to Sean Hannity on The Fox News Channel that a new show can't be judged for "15-20 months."

"Howard took his old audience," said Roth. "We're after a new one."

Ironically, Roth's rebellious rage yesterday drew on the same technique Stern has used for years: vilifying the boss as a means of bonding with every listener who has ever thought his or her own boss is an ugly little dysfunctional worm.

At the end of the show, Roth said, "I hope I'll be back tomorrow."

Dave said the funniest thing this morning. I don't have the exact quote but he was talking about if VH went out on tour again they could easily make the music sound as good as it was it the late seventies. He then said if a current band went out and tried to play the same type of music (Classic rock) in today's musical climate they would be...The Darkness. LMAO:D

See everyone, even DLR recognizes that The Darkness suck!

What the hell is he going to say? Roth doesn't look any better, and hasn't for awhile now.
It's just that Eddie's looks have gone downhill more abruptly. They both look like hell, which I would think is normal for rockers their age.

It's the beginning of the end for this show.

Geez, what's wrong with these two guys???

Ed and Dave, PLAY NICE YA BASTARDS!!!

And I guarantee that if ANY of us posters were to call their boss a "an ugly little dysfunctional worm" we'd be like Abe Lincoln...history

Is it too much to compromise for this ass? "C'mon Dave give me a break" you don't own the friggin station. Push the edge within the parameters but don't spout off at your team

I'm the first in line at a Dave concert but this ego's gotta go if he's to succeed at anything. This is obviously a main reason why Ed tried three freakin times with Dave and it failed. Ed's not innocent eitheer, but this ego thing is a hang up for sure

:funny:

Not sure why anyone involved is surprised at this. Roth should have known they wanted someone to fill Stern's shoes and management should have known that Roth (or anyone who is not a well known Radio dj) wasn't the guy.

im all for dlr railing against his execs. He has to remain true to his vision.
I listened to Howard when he first started out on am radio. noone was listening and he would spend hours just going off, yelling at staff, railing on the boss, railing on the callers, etc..sooner or later, people began to relate. Sure, stern began the trend of talkshow hosts railing against their bosses, but not as a gimmick. it was honest feeling. He doesnt own the exclusive right to that..that's a normal american function..to rip ur boss!
So dlr doing it is not copying howard, its being honest and open.
DLR isnt interested in being a highpaid dj..he's interested in creating something new. He's willing to go to the mattresses and lose his job in pursuit of that. You gotta respect that integrity.

This is all a ruse.

Dave is not in trouble with his boss. Just making it out to look that way so he can be like Howard.

It draws ratings and is probably what they told him to start doing.

Besides the hair, Dave looks the same. He is still in top physical condition. However, the big open-mouth smile just DOESN'T work for him anymore. Whatever.

i completely understand what ur saying, but that means anyone who complains is copying Stern. Stern was so innovative, etc, that most of what he does is going to be copied without anyone intentionally trying to. Its all so natural and accepted now.

Kinda like EVH. he did so much for the guitar, you cant help but have his influence somewhere!

Now, if ur point is that he is intentionally trying to be like stern, i couldnt say because i dont know..but its not a bad thing to imitate;)
He could always copy the two dorks...

man, all dlr has to do is dial ed's phone on the air..the ratings would go through the freakin roof!

Here's the big difference, Howard could rant like this and get away with it, he was CBS's radio meal ticket with huge ratings. Dave isn't. I just think a guy who's show is going in the toilet, and with as little experience as he has in radio, he needs to rethink railing his bosses like this, he's not in a position to do so. You suck at your job, then you tell your bosses they suck?

Looking at it that way, I'm starting to lean towards what Ziggy said, maybe management told him to do it since it worked so well for Howard.

But on the other hand, Dave is arrogant enough to think he's God's gift to radio. Who knows, or cares.

Either way, the writing's on the wall (written in big spraypaint letters)

Disagreeing (or railing against as someone put it) with your bosses is one thing, but humiliating and insulting them on the very radio show that employs you shows no class whatsoever

For normal, everyday people, this is obviously true. But DLR isnt normal, and also, he clearly maintained from before he even went on air and before he signed anything, he made it crystal clear he was going to do his vision..the execs signed on to that as well and i would assume, gave him some kind of time frame...

I would think you guys would root for DLR against the suits, especially since howard exposed most of em as morons!

Whatever daves motus is, it'll be interesting to see how far up to the ledge he's willing to go

For the record, what is Dave's agenda? His vision? His first guest was his Uncle Manny...'nough said.

Why the hell would anyone hire someone without radio experience to be a radio personality. You get the same thing you would get if you hired someone to engineer a train that had never done so. You end up with Al Franken for Allah's sake.

Great radio personalities spend years in small markets developing their craft. Thousands of people try to work on air in radio, few make it and fewer truely develop a great program that is worthy of syndication. Whoever hired Dave should be out the door just before the Diamond One is thrown back out on the street.

I love Dave. Most VH fans do, but he looks NOTHING like he did, not even counting the hair.
He looks, as his mom told him he would eventually, pretty much like Lee Marvin.

Can you still tell it's Dave? Sure. Does he look anything physically like he did when he was in his 30's? Hell no. Nobody does.

Just look at lots of his recent and then older pics...proof's in the pudding.

And I'm not really ragging Dave's looks, just saying that he'd have no room to rag Eddie's if he decided to.

apparently, the only reason he took the job, according to him today, was so he could try and realize his own vision of what radio should be.

I was hyper skeptical of this show but have grown to like it. i am a 40 year old white dude who listens to skynyrd and all of the classics as well as contemporary urban/ethnic (ya know what I mean) music. Gimme some Nelly with my freebird. I hope dave stays true to the vision even if he is fired. I hope he doesn't settle for diversity as some black chick reading his news between zepellin songs.

Gimme something new dave. Ditto Sam and Ed. I enjoyed three and their attempts at the new songs on the greatest hits. If I wanted to listen to mean street all day I could just fire up the ipod.

Number one, I'm in the west coast, so it really doesn't matter to me, 'cause Corolla is on out here I believe. Two, I am not up early enough to listen to a show, and three, I have never found morning radio that funny. I prefer to listen to the CD's that some morning people put out of their best bits.

But if his bosses really are freaking out a couple months into his show, then it's just indicative of all entertainment. The big suits tend to not care about anything but numbers, and if you don't get them fast, you're gone. But this is one reason why downloading has become such a huge problem. The people with discerning ears and tastes want what's good, and they have had to turn to altrenate methods of getting it. People aren't going to the movies, besides DVD sales, home theatre systems, and out of date theatres, because the movies they make aren't very good anymore. The music being shoved down our throats isn't very good either. And now, not even 100 days into Roth's show, the execs are freaking out about Roth's numbers. How is Corolla doing? I haven't even heard.

Tom Petty made a great album called the Last DJ, documenting many of the problems musicians face today. But the message is applicable in any of these cases. Petty would have never become the artist he has, if he had started in today's industry. He would have been dropped after one album.

I think this is the BEST thing that Roth has done on the show. He has been spouting off ALL WEEK, not only at his bosses, but at listeners too... at everybody and it has made the show interesting. I haven't wanted to turn the dial once this week. (although I only listen about 45 minutes a day)

Dave is finally KICKIN some ASS on the radio...If he would have started off like this, it would have been a different story... Go Dave!! I hope he makes it around this bend!

His show is VERY different from anything out therre... you gotta give him that. Its very sit back in a lounge, pour a martini and shoot the shit. (whether your full of it or not isn't the point)

The show has its place on radio.

He is not stern nor does he want to be Stern.

He's DAVID LEE ROTH. Smart, crazy, wild, funny, thoughtful, and witty.

He's always been a good conversationalist. Even Eddie would admit that.

What did Eddie say on VH UNLEASHED?

"He's good at the mouth"

The Spring Arbitron book, the year's most important, starts on March 30th. If CBS decides to pull the plug on Roth, they'd want to do it prior to the start of the book. Talk has it that CBS could also relocate either Adam Carolla or Rover to the East Coast so their shows would air live in the East, and on
a few hours' delay on the West Coast. Rover is on in the Eastern Time Zone (on WZNE/Rochester, NY). He starts his show at WCKG in Chicago at 5:00AM, so east coast stations can take it live at 6:00AM. It has been said that Carolla does not want to leave L.A.; so a relocation of that show is unlikely. Carolla could always be used on the East Coast for middays (kind of the opposite of how Stern's live feed was run overnight on KLSX), but that may be quite unlikely. On the other hand, a much bigger deal MAY be in the works. A rumor on the New York Radio Message Board that Opie & Anthony may take over David Lee Roth's morning show in multiple markets within the Infinity chain, while continuing their XM show. The FM show might be some type of edited re-broadcast. In mid-February, OnA alluded to "getting the call" from CBS/Infinity after discussing how horrid David Lee Roth's show was doing. Beyond that, they've been curiously silent about any changes to the show.

Nothing new here to report, but here is today's Daily News article:

TALK OF THE TOWN: The local radio biz is crackling with rumors that Opie and Anthony, former morning team on WNEW (102.7 FM) and currently on XM Satellite Radio, will sign a syndication deal with CBS Radio that could include replacing David Lee Roth, current morning man on WFNY (92.3 FM).

So far nothing official has been said, and a CBS spokeswoman yesterday that the company would maintain its policy of not commenting on rumors. CBS did send out a press advisory listing Roth's guests for the coming week.

Opie and Anthony also declined comment on their XM show Friday, but in an interview last month, Opie said they were talking with unnamed companies about returning to terrestrial radio "when the deal is right for everyone."

This would likely mean continuation of their XM show, where they like the lack of content controls. But "90% or more of our show," Anthony said, would be suitable for broadcast radio, so a syndication deal would likely use an edited version.

CBS took O&A off WNEW after the infamous August 2002 "sex in St. Patrick's" incident. But by then they were a hit, and CBS' respect for their radio appeal is reflected in the fact the company paid them to sit out for two years rather than risk their being picked up by a competitor.

Also the boys talked about it today on the show, and mentioned there are some sort of talks going on with CBS. At one point Opie blurted out that CBS wanted OnA to take Howie's old Krock Studio. They mentioned something about doing longer shows, and took a stab at Howie for working a 4 day week. So let the speculation run.
