View Full Version : Respect for Mike

I have always been a huge fan of Mike and over the last 10 years or so I've maintained that he's been the only solid member of the band. I am sad to see that Ed has treated him so badly over the last few years which finally ended in total alienation.
VH was an entity, not just Ed and Mike was 1/4 of it, they partied, had fun and never cared about any of the politics. Anytime you have ever seen Mike on stage he's always given 110% and always has a good time, it's obvious that's all he's ever cared about. They can short change him, make him sign whatever they want and he's still going to give you all he's got in every show.
Mike should be an example to them, not an outcast.
I wish Mike the best and will support any projects he's involved with. He deserves tons much more respect than he's been given, I'm glad to see so much of the community behind him here and I know that even though it won't make a difference at all to the delusional, control freak alcoholic guitarist, at least we can be sure he's hearing about it.
Absolutely, the fan-friendliest part of the band is gone.

a virtual toast to mr. sobolewski (sp?)...:thumb:
a damn shame how this is panning out...
so when does alex get written out of the royalties, too, since it was all about how mike didn't contribute to the song-writing? exactly how much did alex contribute? i thought the old joke was that drummers were the most easily replaced... i'm not knocking alex's ability, but i think ed's logic is all contradictory and no one is ever going to call him on it...
Do you really think Ed would ever write Alex out of anything?

I think the more operative question is: When is Alex finally going to wake up and stop Ed from destroying whatever is left of their once great band? After Ed kills himself?

You never know. Don't Alex and Sam talk from time to time? At least Sammy mentioned something like that in an interview. Maybe there's another unwritten rule that current band members aren't allowed to talk to former ones.
But then again that would have kicked Ed out of the band back in '96... :D

The fact that they are brothers is probably why everyone figures it's a given that Ed wouldn't do that.

no, i don't think ed would kick alex out... i was being sarcastic (we need a smiley for that! :D )... my point is that it's a ridiculous argument to try and justify cutting off royalties from mike...

i think alex talks to sammy and responds to ed's criticisms with comments like, "yeah, i know, what do you want me to do... he's my brother... i'll try and talk to him... i know, i know..."
it would probably take input from alex to get mike involved in vh again at this point...

It's amazing how Mike's 'legend' with the fans has grown tenfold upon his official departure. For all those years he was just kind of 'there', now he's seemingly larger than all of them combined. If you would have told me that 20 years ago I'd have never believed it. I can't think of any other musician where I've seen this happen.

Mike is always going to be part of the Van Halen legacy. I'll be there for his next musical project.
The Chickenfoot project sounds interesting, maybe someday the Planet US thing will come to fruition.
Plus, I'd love to hear him get together with a bunch of other like minded people & punch out some songs, maybe even a power trio like Mike on bass & lead vocals, Zakk Wylde on guitar & Vinnie Paul on drums. That would cook.

 Strange how nobody has a problem with Mike going out and playing with other musicians (which I think is cool, too) but, Edward is not allowed by any of you guys to play with his SON!!!! The hypocrisy of it all just baffles me. Before anybody starts blue vainin' and pops a blood vessel in their melon, just let me state that I hope Mike is back w/Ed, Al, and Dave where he belongs. But, everyone better realize that sooner or later Ed is going to want to do something musically with his son. And, judging from his comments, I'd say that Al is going to be there as well.:headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

You're apparently easily baffled. We knew that already, but you can stop driving the point here, we get it. You're a dumbshit. :)
Mike doesn't go out with other musicians and call it Van Halen. That's the difference.

Well, one might say all YOU do is suck Republican cock and bash the commie pinko lefties, and little else. LOL, and for the record, I don't care nor have I really considered what I've done to you, I was simply inferring from your response that you felt the need to stick up for the troll, thusly revealing your ongoing disdain toward me and my posts, thusly insinuating I have directly affected you in the past. Follow the bread crumbs slowly, kid. :)
I put down certain older members as well. Newbies who come in bashing Van Hagar ad nauseum are more often than not aliases, rather than newbies. Nor have I ever claimed I'm the know-all end-all of the Links, and I'm no mod nor admin, and certainly have no stance as judge or jury. Don't be a drama queen, Zorba. Save that for your Clinton tirades.
I simply have little tolerance for trolling 'Tards, and only a little bit more for people who never saw CVH telling others what's what about CVH. Oh, and people who sold out Mike for Wolfgang, people who think Dave and Ed are CVH and Alex and Mike don't need to be there, that also earned disdain from me, absolutely. Funny, where were your words of praise and surprise when I posted my positive, pink cotton candy soliliquoy on the greatness of Van Halen? You only see what you wanna see, Z. That's kinda obvious coming from a kid who puts a ridiculous playground slag like calling Nancy Pelosi a stupid bitch in his VAN HALEN signature on a message board.

I hear ya, bro, I really do, but if they take the potshot...it's their bed.
The alias Jungle kid, he was citing old and tired Eddie apologist rhetoric statements, one he's reiterated a number of times in other threads, which a number of other people have responded to in kind with the usual beratement befitting of the mood. Ed and Al's last name = Van Halen. Alias, we've heard it before, and it's no more true now than it was the first time around.
Zorba then jumps in out of the blue and makes a snarky crack not at the perpetrator of trolling newbie hash, but at the guy who responded to him.
I responded accordingly. Z could've easily PM'd me instead.
Same old story, bro. If these cats wanna howl and scratch, let 'em. But it's foolhardy to throw out flaming cracks and not expect backlash. I understand you're a senior poster who prefers ignoring the BS, and that's a cool and wise way to handle it. Me, I prefer giving back what they're selling. Though it ruffles their feathers more, it more often reveals their house of cards for what it almost always is.

Agreed, but it will never stop. To be honest, I think it's pretty pathetic. With all the years of inactivity, it just baffles me that this arguement continues to go strong. I mean it's 2007, and people are still arguing over David Lee Roth and Sammy Hagar. That, to me, is just sad.

In a way Michael Anthony is the ultimate bass player IMO. So much enthusiasm and support from the little guy. Never gets in the way of the guitar while keepin' it interesting with the bass.
I like his fingerstyle playing better than his pick style btw. That groove on 'Poundcake' proves he has some serious strenth in those digits!

Whatever, dude. He probably got the invite from the guys, I have a hard time believing he would just walk out there and blatantly screw around with CS's performance. Mikey has always been great to the fans. mark my words in a year or two tops Sammy who has always been wallet friendly will get alex to smooth things over again and they'll tour with dave and mikey on a monster cash grab tour. I disagree with you 110% on this. Their relationship (Mike's and Hagar's) are thru in regards to Ed and Alex. They've moved on and are in a better place now, why would they even entertain the idea of going back to a miserable place that is Van Halen? They're now the captains of their own ships so to speak, and are doing quite well for themselves. We've now seen two reunions (of sorts) with Hagar in '04 and now one with Dave, minus Mike. Unfortunately for some of us older fans, Ed chose to replace Mike with his son, and you can bet that he has absolutely no plans on letting Wolfgang go now. As bad as I hate to say, it ain't gonna happen with Mike in Van Halen again. This tour with both Hagar and Dave wouldn't happen either, not in a million years. Just don't see it. At all.
Also, with Ed no longer playing up to his own standards these days, I don't see any need for them to continue on as a touring band anyways. I hope they do the right thing and retire after this tour is over and put this thing to rest once and for all. Ed got what he wanted by having his son join, and Dave got what he wanted too, fronting VH again. Their career is finished. I don't see any new music being made either, as the creative well is dried up. Besides, Ed's mindset is more towards selling you his gear than playing music these days.

What really disappoints me more than anything else is the fact that Van Halen didn't close out their career in grand fashion with Mike at the helm. Once again, King Edward fucks it up by subjecting the fans to choose his son. A lot of us were up in arms over this. I had no desire to see his son play alongside the others, still don't/won't. It's nothing against Wolfgang either, he's the innocent in all this, thanks to his old man forcing him on us. Oh, what could have been is all I can say. With Mike being present, you can bet that there would've been many sellouts. As this tour stands, I'd be surprised if there were even a handful. Van Halen is the band that can never get it right.

i agree with a lot of what you are saying, but the reason mike and sam would do the tour is the same reason they did it in 2004, the same reason dave is touring now and the same reason they'll continue to tour until they can't tour no more..........$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. sam would do it a heartbeat! i used to really like sam, but have found him to be very full of shit! do you recall in 2004 when he ripped ed and said how the ticket prices were so high and the vip packages were a rip off? well look at sam now, he does the same I LOVE ALL ACCESS bullshit packages as van halen! i could go on forever, but mark my words the day will come when they pretend to kiss and make up like dave did and off on tour they go!

What you're not seeing here evidently, is the fact that a tour with Mike and Hagar has already been done. Ed still harbors bad feelings towards those two for whatever reasons. He has a tendency to hold grudges for a long time when he thinks he's been wronged in some way. We still don't really know what transpired between Mike and him, and probably never will I would imagine. But, with Hagar, it seemed like Ed hated the mere mention of anything tequila related from a certain hot spot in Mexico was enough to set him off. Those guys don't get along anymore. This isn't about doing it for money anymore either, as they are rich beyond their wildest dreams. They said they didn't want to put up with Ed's drunken behavior anymore. Can't say I blame them. I don't think they even completed all the 2004 tour dates if memory serves before they parted ways. It was that bad. And the final reason this won't ever take place is because Ed's touring days are nearing the end. His playing has deteriorated tremendously imo. Right now, I'd venture to say the only reason we are seeing him is because of Wolfgang, and him alone. He wanted to share him with the world, so we're stuck with this version, like it or not. And believe me when I say that I don't.
Nope, no future tour with either Hagar or Mike my friend. Still don't see that happening.
i agree with a lot of what you are saying, but the reason mike and sam would do the tour is the same reason they did it in 2004, the same reason dave is touring now and the same reason they'll continue to tour until they can't tour no more..........$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. sam would do it a heartbeat! i used to really like sam, but have found him to be very full of shit! do you recall in 2004 when he ripped ed and said how the ticket prices were so high and the vip packages were a rip off? well look at sam now, he does the same I LOVE ALL ACCESS bullshit packages as van halen! i could go on forever, but mark my words the day will come when they pretend to kiss and make up like dave did and off on tour they go!
Sam does the same ILAA packages..........have you done any research to see how much they cost numb-nuts?
$200...Do you know how much the avg. VH ILAA ticket package is........$800!
Here's what you get for VH:
A ticket in the pit (Row 1-9; More than likely Row 2-9 as the front row seats go to very very rich powerful people)
You get a brief tour backstage
You get a shirt.
A Laminate
With Sammy's you get:
a spot ON STAGE
A t-shirt
Laminate
So if you cancel out the tickets in each package in regards to the cost of the package....
For Sammy's you are basically paying 200 bucks for a ticket to be on stage with the band.
For VH your paying let's say..$400 for a ticket to be in either Row 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9....
And the other $400 is for a t-shirt, backstage tour, and a laminate....
Which is the better deal? Well the better deal is all opinionated, I admit. But $200 ticket that gets you on stage or a $400 dollar ticket that COULD land me in Row 9....I'd rather pay $200.
Next time do a little research before you click that Post Reply button
Now that being said...OF COURSE Sam does it for monetary reason. But have you any idea what Sam actually makes per show...
On average each Sam show makes 90 to 100k each night. Now then he has to pay his crew, staff, plus member of his band.
I'm not saying he doesn't do it for money.....I'm sure that's a part of it....but you can't compare VH to Sammy in terms of who is money grubbing.
VH ticket: $180 (For a 2 hour show)
Sammy ticket: $50 (For a 3 hour show)
Again it's all opinionated regarding what you'd rather pay.

Sam is only charging what he thinks people would be willing to pay. If he could fill the place up at $100-$150 per ticket he would charge that.
More importantly, why wouldn't he? Sam's a businessman, if he's going to drag himself away from his family and hit the road, why shouldn't he get paid? All these people, (not you in particular), who say someone's only doing it for the money--well, no kidding. At this point, they're pretty much all doing it for the money--and I don't have any problem with that.

VH sure isn't the same that's for sure. But this ^ is why I'm not sure if I wanna go to see them, even tho they're right in my backyard.

Only go if someone comps you! I kid of course, you'll do what you want. I couldn't, but that's just me though. We both know it ain't the same. Damn shame that King Ed can't put aside his grudges and do the right thing.

Yeah I'm a bit miffed at Edward for what he's done but what's done is done. It's definitely not the same. So it's okay to wrong the fans, but Edward can't be wronged in any way at all? That's crap. :irked:
We'll see how things go towards Thursday I guess. :(

You know that, how?
Sam wants to make money. Again though, unlike most everybody else here, I don't say that as any sort of criticism whatsoever.

I agreed( even though I don't have to agree because I made the assertion in the first place)...that Sam wants to make money...nobody wants to lose money. It's not criticism...it's the truth. He sold 80% of CW for 80 million...why do you think he did that?
I have no 100% hard PROOF for this. But I believe you are getting more bang for your back than paying $800 for VH.
Using his ILAA packages as an argument to prove that Sam is just as greedy as Ed and Al is RIDICULOUS.
It's still a business and in certain market Sammy COULD charge more for his tickets and people would still go....at least I and a many others here would.

Still don't see that happening.
look back in 2004 ed was as fucked up as he's ever been and they agreed to do the tour. i'd venture to say that his playing this tour is much better than what we saw the majority of 2004! i could be wrong, but even at the hall of fame induction, mikey said he's do the dave tour if he got a call even though he'd already been told wolfie was doing the tour. this band is obviously a little fucked so never say never.

yes i have done research and please do not ever compare a vh tour with dave with the tequilla convention sammy calls a tour! and let me tell you another thing, if sammy could fetch $800 you'd be paying it! it's not like sammy goes to ilaa and says "hey be good to my fans don't rip them off"!

...it's not like sammy goes to ilaa and says "hey be good to my fans don't rip them off"!
In fairness, how do you know that? Look...these "rock stars" are as dopey in reality as the characters in "Spinal Tap". In all actuality, Sam Hagar may indeed have said "hey, let's not price things out of reach for the average guy"...and that may have been the last connection to the process he may have had. After that comes marketing, finance and promotion, three adjuncts to the process of keeping an artist on the road, and making it a profitable venture.
Be realistic about this...if any one of us staking a claim in the constantly shifting and highly voluble marketplace of today, and I don't care if you sell lawnmowers or pancake syrup, were forced to promote your product, you'd put your name on the damned thing and hope that good faith went with it.
Yet...
Are you honestly telling me because you had the acumen to come up with the
mower or the syrup that you also had the "know-how" to sell the shit as well?
What in the royal fuck is this? Capitalism and the idea of free enterprise is what built this country in the first place. In truth, decrying Hagar's idea of supplemental income, and being pissy about how he conducts his business affairs is not only short-sighted, yet ultimately in an awkward and very strange manner...is pretty much mother-fuckingly "Un-American".
So what is the deal here? Rock and Roll with sponsorship and supplemental dividends (and reduced ticket prices) is a bad idea? The notion that consumers may actually approve of being able to "buy-into" things that they may appreciate is somehow wrong-headed? If a guy has an extra few bucks he may actually get to sit onstage with the very artist he is supporting?
The guy is making a living, with the talents that he has. The debate about the quality of those talents rages on all about us. Yet please, do not hand me these snide asides about how the fellow "supposedly" handles business affairs. Unless your own house of cards is worthy of much of the same sort of scrutiny.

Ed was drinking heavy that year because he obviously did not want to take part in a tour. He just wasn't into it and it showed. Were Hagar and Mike the reason for this behavior? Perhaps, we'll never really know what the deal was. Fast forward to 2007-2008, and yeah, he's playing sober (for the most part, as far as I can tell) but now something else is wrong with him. Could it be arthritis? Could it be a hearing loss? Could it be cancer returning? It could be any one of these or worse, all of them together, which directly affects his playing. Something is definitely not right in his world. A compounded problem perhaps, which makes me think he will do just enough to finish this tour and call it quits as far as a touring band anymore. This tour with Dave is the final Hurrah, as Ed had no other options left to play. Bringing back Hagar two yrs. from now would be reopening old wounds he has with him and I seriously doubt Ed would bother. Hell, you Hagar fans got your reunion before us Rothtards did, so why complain?
As far as the pricing goes for a Hagar vs. Van Halen show, I think Hagar makes his tickets more reasonable and gives you more for your money than Van Halen does. And yeah, nobody works for free, but he does keep it down compared to other big name acts.
I'm sure Mike would do another tour with VH, but only because he knows fans are clamoring for that to happen. It's not for any kind of friendship between him and Ed currently though. But, with each passing day, that slips further and further away. With Wolfgang now in VH, I don't see Mike returning. $0.02
